Neither the Ford Transit nor the Ram ProMaster is an evidence-based universal winner for van life. The better starter depends on your travel routes, desired layout, parking constraints, and—most importantly—the payload of the exact van after conversion. Ford lists 2026 Transit configurations with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive; Ram identifies the 2026 ProMaster as front-wheel drive. Use those differences to narrow your options, then compare specific configurations rather than the nameplates alone.
Start with your route and drivetrain needs
The 2026 Ford Transit is offered in rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) configurations, according to Ford’s 2026 Transit technical specifications. Ram says the 2026 ProMaster is front-wheel drive (FWD) in its ProMaster FAQ.
That is a configuration distinction, not proof that one van will perform better on a particular road. Match the available drivetrain to the conditions you expect to encounter, and evaluate the individual vehicle and tires as well. The manufacturer material cited here does not establish comparative traction on snow, gravel, mud, or other surfaces.
Choose the body and roof around your floor plan
Wheelbase, roof height, and body configuration determine how much usable space you have and how the conversion can fit. Compare the exact versions you are considering before sketching a bed, kitchen, storage, or work area. Ram’s cargo dimensions vary by configuration, so a figure from one ProMaster should not be treated as a lineup-wide measurement.
#1 Best Overall
- Package Includes: you will receive 1 roll of approximately 16in x 19.7ft polyester fiber insulation for vans, approximately 1.18 inch/ 3 cm thick, designed for your camper van and can be cut to size
- Thermal Insulation: Our automotive camper van insulation is designed to help manage interior temperature, acting as a thermal barrier. By reducing heat transfer, it helps maintain a stable interior temperature, thus improving comfort in all weather conditions.
- Sound Absorbing Design: The fiber core structure helps absorb and reduce airborne noise and vibration, such as road and engine noise; this helps create a quieter interior environment for your campervan, motorhome, or multi-purpose vehicle
- Waterproof and Durable: This insulation material has waterproof non-woven fabric layers on both sides, providing moisture-proof and absorbent properties. This property helps inhibit condensation and extends the material's lifespan in vehicle applications.
- Easy Installation and Versatile: The material is flexible and can be easily cut with a utility knife or scissors to fit complex shapes and curves such as wheel arches, door panels, walls, and ceilings; its lightweight nature simplifies the installation process for DIY van and RV conversion projects
What the cited ProMaster figures describe
Ram’s specification page for the 2026 ProMaster 1500 low-roof cargo van with a 118-inch wheelbase lists 259 cubic feet of interior cargo volume and 65.4 inches of cargo height. Those measurements are specific to that listed configuration. A low-roof figure is not a stand-in for the dimensions of a high-roof van or a different wheelbase.
Load-floor access and interior width
Ram’s 2026 FAQ gives a 21-inch load-floor height and 75.6 inches of wall-to-wall cargo width for the ProMaster. Verify both against the exact configuration you plan to buy. A lower load floor may make loading easier, but the cited figure alone does not establish that the ProMaster is the better choice for a particular conversion.

Calculate payload for the finished build
Payload is the weight the vehicle can carry; the conversion, occupants, water, food, gear, and other cargo all draw from it. Start with the exact van’s payload label and specifications, then estimate the completed build and the weight you will carry on trips. Leave room for real-world variation rather than planning right up to a maximum figure.
Ford says maximum payload varies with accessories and vehicle configuration in its 2026 Transit technical specifications. Ford’s product page lists 5,103 pounds of maximum payload for one specific 2026 configuration: a T-350HD high-roof, extended-length cargo van with RWD and dual rear wheels (Ford 2026 Transit Van product page). That is not the payload of every Transit.

The cited Ram specification lists 4,160 pounds of payload for the 2026 ProMaster 1500 low-roof van with a 118-inch wheelbase. The two payload figures describe different configurations, so they are not a like-for-like comparison or a basis for declaring one model roomier, safer, or better for a build. Check the payload information on the individual van you are considering.

Overall length and height affect where a converted van can park and which garages or routes it can use. Compare the exterior dimensions of the exact wheelbase and roof configurations you are shopping for against your regular parking situation. The cargo measurements above do not establish those exterior dimensions.
Price, fuel economy, reliability, repair access, and the condition of a used van can also change the decision. The manufacturer specifications cited here do not provide a comparative basis for those factors. For a used vehicle, assess its individual maintenance history and condition; for either model, check local access to service that can handle the specific configuration.
Quick Recap
A practical way to shortlist the two vans
- Write down your route and parking constraints. Note the road conditions you expect, where you will park, and any height or length limits.
- Choose a workable layout. Decide what must fit and compare the roof, wheelbase, and cargo dimensions of the exact configurations that could accommodate it.
- Check drivetrain availability. Compare Transit RWD or AWD options with the ProMaster’s FWD configuration without assuming a drivetrain guarantees performance in a given condition.
- Run the payload math. Use the individual van’s payload label and specifications, then account for the conversion, people, water, supplies, and gear.
- Evaluate the actual vehicle. Compare price, service options, and—especially for a used van—condition and maintenance history. These factors are specific to the vehicle and location, not settled by the model name.
