There is not enough comparable evidence to rank every Ford SUV from most to least reliable. The clearest model-year-specific signal is for the 2025 Escape, which Consumer Reports rated more reliable than other cars from the same model year. Its 2025 Explorer and Bronco verdicts were below their same-year peers, while its 2025 Expedition page showed reliability as unavailable. Those comparisons do not establish a complete ranking among Ford SUVs, across model years, or for every version.
How to read this reliability ranking
This is an evidence-based ranking of the conclusions the available ratings support—not a claim that every Ford SUV can be placed in a definitive best-to-worst order. The Consumer Reports verdicts below compare each model with other cars from its own model year; they are not numerical scores or direct head-to-head results among Ford SUVs.
Consumer Reports defines reliability this way: “Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead.” Its latest subscriber survey referenced on the pages covered about 380,000 vehicles; the page did not state the survey year. That is the survey’s overall scale, not a Ford-only sample.
Model year and generation matter. A finding about a 2025 vehicle does not establish how an earlier generation—or a later model year—will perform. Powertrain and version matter too: gasoline, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric variants may have different reliability patterns, and the evidence here does not compare every Ford configuration.

Ford SUV reliability: the evidence-supported order
| Evidence position | Ford SUV | What the available evidence says |
|---|---|---|
| Strongest positive signal found | 2025 Ford Escape | Consumer Reports says it is more reliable than other cars from the same model year. This does not prove it is the most reliable Ford SUV. Separately, J.D. Power’s 2025 Initial Quality Study ranked the Escape highest in the Compact SUV segment; that is an initial-quality result, not a long-term reliability verdict. |
| Below-peer verdicts; no order between them established | 2025 Ford Explorer | Consumer Reports says it is less reliable than other cars from the same model year. Its model page showed 22 NHTSA recalls when checked; the count can change and is not a reliability score. |
| Below-peer verdicts; no order between them established | 2025 Ford Bronco | Consumer Reports says it is less reliable than other cars from the same model year. Its model page showed 19 NHTSA recalls when checked; the count can change and is not a reliability score. |
| Reliability position unknown | 2025 Ford Expedition | Consumer Reports listed overall reliability as unavailable. Its model page showed five NHTSA recalls when checked; that count is not a substitute for a reliability rating. |
| Not ranked here | Bronco Sport and Mustang Mach-E | Ford’s U.S. model listings include both, but a comparable model-year verdict was not available for this comparison. Consumer Reports’ brand overview says the Bronco Sport scores above average among current Ford models, but that does not establish its ordinal position against the SUVs above. |
What this says about Ford’s current SUV lineup
Ford’s U.S. showroom snapshot lists the 2026 Escape, 2026 Bronco Sport, 2026 Mustang Mach-E, 2026 Bronco, 2027 Explorer, and 2027 Expedition. The reliability findings in the table concern 2025 models, so they should not be presented as ratings of those newer model years.
Ford says the Escape is being discontinued “for the time being” and that support for existing vehicles will continue. New-model availability and the reliability of a used Escape are separate questions: discontinuation does not itself indicate poor reliability, and continued support does not establish how a particular vehicle has been maintained.

This is not a ranking of Ford’s full SUV history. It does not establish positions for discontinued models such as the Edge, Flex, or EcoSport, older generations, or all year-and-powertrain combinations. Assigning those vehicles a place in the order would require comparable historical data that is not available here.
Reliability, initial quality, and recalls are different measures
Reliability
Consumer Reports’ model-year verdicts are the evidence used here to describe relative reliability. “More reliable” or “less reliable” than same-year cars is a peer comparison, not a guarantee about an individual SUV or a numerical Ford-only ranking.

- 5 Inch 1:26 Scale, 26 Times Smaller Then The Real Car
- Pullback and Go Action
- Two Opening Doors
Initial quality
J.D. Power’s 2025 Escape result concerns initial quality. It adds a positive but different signal: it should not be combined with Consumer Reports’ reliability verdict as though both measure long-term durability.
Recalls
A recall count records safety campaigns, not a vehicle’s overall reliability. Counts can change, and a model-level count cannot tell you whether a specific used SUV has an open recall. Check the individual vehicle identification number (VIN) for open recalls.

How to use these findings when shopping for a used Ford SUV
- Match the model year and version. Start with the exact year, generation, and powertrain. Do not assume a 2025 rating applies to earlier or later vehicles or to every version of the same model.
- Check the VIN for open recalls. A model’s reported recall total does not show whether a particular vehicle has had required work completed.
- Review the vehicle’s own history. Look at service records, mileage, and ownership history rather than treating a model-level rating as a condition report.
- Assess the individual SUV. A qualified inspection can help identify condition issues that a broad model-year rating cannot resolve.
Which Ford SUV is the most reliable?
The 2025 Escape has the strongest positive reliability signal among the models with comparable verdicts in this snapshot, but the evidence does not establish it as the most reliable Ford SUV overall. The Explorer and Bronco both received below-peer 2025 verdicts, without evidence to rank one above the other; the Expedition’s reliability result was unavailable. The Bronco Sport, Mustang Mach-E, older models, and other model years cannot be placed in a complete order from these findings.
