Ford’s new “assembly tree” is a production system designed to build its next electric vehicle from three sections assembled in parallel and joined near the end. The company says the system, paired with a new vehicle platform, could reduce parts and assembly time. Its first planned vehicle is a four-door midsize electric pickup targeted to start at about $30,000 and debut in 2027; neither the price nor final specifications are confirmed.
How Ford’s assembly tree works
Ford announced its Universal EV Platform and Universal EV Production System on August 11, 2025. Rather than move one mostly complete vehicle down a single assembly line, the system builds three major sections on separate lines, then brings them together near the end of production. Ford calls the layout an “assembly tree.”
Three sections move forward in parallel
- Front section: assembled on its own line.
- Rear section: assembled on a separate line.
- Structural battery section: assembled with seats, consoles and carpeting.
Ford says workers receive job-specific kits with parts, fasteners, scanners and power tools arranged for the task. The intended effect is to bring the needed components and equipment to the worker, rather than require repeated trips or reaching for them. Ford’s explanation of the system is at Ford’s announcement and company explainer.
What changes in the vehicle and factory
The assembly layout is only one part of Ford’s plan. The Universal EV Platform uses a structural prismatic lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack as the vehicle floor, and large one-piece aluminum castings—described by Ford as “unicastings”—in place of numerous smaller pieces. The battery structure and castings are vehicle-design choices intended to reduce component count and complexity; parallel assembly and job-specific kits change how work is organized in the plant.

Ford’s published figures describe its estimates for the planned vehicle and process, rather than independently verified comparisons:
| Ford-reported figure | What it refers to |
|---|---|
| 20% fewer parts | Compared with a typical vehicle or program, as stated by Ford. |
| 25% fewer fasteners | Ford’s estimate for the new approach. |
| 40% fewer workstations | Dock-to-dock in the plant, according to Ford. |
| 15% faster assembly time, net | Ford’s expected net improvement after accounting for time reinvested in insourcing and automation. |
| More than 4,000 feet shorter and 10 kilograms lighter | The wiring harness compared with the one in Ford’s first-generation electric SUV. |
| 50% fewer connections and 50% fewer cooling hoses | Figures attributed to Bryce Currie, Ford vice president of Americas manufacturing. |
Ford also says the integrated platform and production process could make the truck’s assembly up to 40% faster than current Louisville products before the company reinvests some time in insourcing and automation. Its stated net improvement is 15%. These are company projections; the cited announcement and production description do not provide independent plant-performance data. The 15% figure concerns expected assembly time, not a demonstrated 15% cut in the vehicle’s retail price.

Ford’s case for lower costs—and the limits of the claim
Fewer parts, fasteners and workstations could simplify assembly, while the structural battery and large castings consolidate vehicle structure. Ford’s stated rationale is that reducing complexity and changing the flow of work can make production more efficient. But the published figures do not quantify how much any of those changes will reduce the pickup’s manufacturing cost, or how much savings would be reflected in its sticker price.
Ford describes the new system as a way to reduce reaching, twisting, turning and bending by placing parts and tools in the work area. It has cited an 84% reduction in reaching over the fender as one ergonomic example. Currie said fewer connections and cooling hoses could also reduce faulty-connection risk. Those are Ford’s descriptions of intended worker and quality benefits; the sources do not report independent worker assessments or measured defect rates.

The first vehicle: a midsize electric pickup planned for 2027
Ford says the first vehicle on the platform will be a four-door midsize electric pickup assembled at Louisville Assembly Plant, intended for U.S. and export markets. Its announced target was a starting MSRP of about $30,000, with a planned debut in 2027. These are targets and plans, not a current retail offer or a confirmed on-sale date.
Ford said details including the reveal date, final starting price, EPA-estimated range, battery sizes and charging times would come later. The announcement therefore does not establish the truck’s final specifications or when customers can order or take delivery. The Associated Press reported the announcement and context, but did not verify Ford’s future production-efficiency projections: Associated Press coverage.

Ford said it planned to invest approximately $2 billion to transform Louisville Assembly Plant and secure 2,200 hourly jobs. The work builds on a separate, previously announced $3 billion commitment to BlueOval Battery Park Michigan, where Ford plans to assemble prismatic LFP batteries. Ford described the combined investment across the two sites as about $5 billion and expected nearly 4,000 direct jobs created or secured.
Ford’s CEO Jim Farley called the approach “the most radical change on how we design and how we build vehicles at Ford since the Model T,” as quoted by the Associated Press. Ford’s Doug Field described the challenge as delivering new ideas “in a way that millions can access.” These statements express Ford’s ambitions; the published targets are not evidence that the planned cost or production gains have already been achieved.
