Ford’s announcement describes a U.S. safety recall of approximately 4,380,609 vehicles—not half a million—because a software fault may disable lights on a connected trailer and, on some vehicles, trailer braking. The campaign is Ford recall 26C10. A vehicle’s model and year alone do not confirm eligibility; owners should check the VIN.
What is the Ford trailer module recall?
Ford says the integrated trailer module may stop communicating with the vehicle. If a trailer is connected, its stop lamps and turn signals may not illuminate. Vehicles equipped with a “High series” trailer module may also lose trailer braking.
Without working trailer signals, following drivers may not recognize that the towing vehicle is braking, turning, or changing lanes. Losing trailer braking can also make the trailer harder for the driver to control. Ford says the fault can increase crash risk for the towing vehicle and other road users.
Which Ford and Lincoln vehicles are listed?

Ford estimates the U.S. campaign population at 4,380,609 vehicles. These are model-year ranges, not a list of every vehicle in those ranges; check the VIN to determine whether a particular vehicle is included. Ford’s announcement is available at Ford’s recall notice.
Canada has a separate notice: Transport Canada recall 2026079 lists certain Ford and Lincoln F-150, Maverick, F-600, Expedition, Navigator, Super Duty, Ranger, and Transit vehicles, among others. It also includes certain Super Duty incomplete vehicles. The Canadian listing is separate from Ford’s U.S. population estimate; consult Transport Canada’s notice for its affected vehicles and owner instructions.

What might a driver notice?
Ford says warning signs may include a “Trailer Brake Module Fault” message on the instrument panel, a turn-signal indicator that flashes rapidly, or a “Blind Spot Assist System fault” message. These messages are not a complete diagnostic checklist, and seeing or not seeing them does not establish whether a vehicle is part of the recall.
How do I check whether my vehicle is recalled?
- Find your vehicle identification number (VIN), typically visible through the windshield on the driver’s side or on vehicle documents.
- Enter the VIN in the NHTSA recall lookup, as Ford directs, to check for an open recall. A model and year match by itself is not enough.
- If you are in Canada, check Transport Canada recall 2026079 and follow the notice’s owner guidance.
- Contact Ford or a Ford dealer if the lookup is unclear or you need to arrange the update.
How does Ford fix the trailer module recall?
Ford’s stated remedy is a software update to the integrated trailer module. The company said the update would be offered over the air (OTA), through mobile service, or at a Ford dealer. Ford announced availability beginning March 17, 2026 for the majority of vehicles, with OTA deployments expected for all vehicles by May 2026. That is the announced schedule, not confirmation that a specific vehicle has received the update; check your VIN and confirm the repair status with Ford.

For Canada, Transport Canada says Ford will notify owners by mail and send an OTA update to eligible vehicles, or owners may book an appointment with a Ford dealership. The Canadian notice was originally published February 20, 2026, and last updated March 4, 2026.
Should I tow before the update?
The defect matters when a trailer is connected: trailer lights may fail, and some equipped vehicles may lose trailer braking. Check the VIN and contact Ford or a dealer for vehicle-specific advice before towing if the recall is open or you suspect the fault is present. Do not treat a warning message—or its absence—as proof that the trailer system is safe or that the recall repair is complete.

What has Ford said about crashes or injuries?
Ford says it is not aware of accidents, injuries, or fires attributed to the issue. That is the company’s statement about its knowledge, not proof that no incident has occurred.
