The original American-brand production-car milestone was a 6:57.685 Nürburgring Nordschleife lap by the Ford Mustang GTD, announced in December 2024. Ford later reported a quicker 6:52.072 production-class lap in 2025. Its latest figure, 6:40.835, belongs to the GTD Competition and was placed by Ford in the Pre-Production / Prototype Class—not the production-car class.
Mustang GTD Nürburgring lap times, by year and class
“Record” needs a date and a category here. The times below are Ford-reported results, and the cars and classifications are not identical.
| Date and announcement | Car and lap time | Ford-reported category or ranking |
|---|---|---|
| August 7, 2024 lap; announced December 10, 2024 | Mustang GTD — 6:57.685 | Ford called it the first American-brand production car to lap the Nordschleife in under seven minutes, and the fifth-fastest stock production sports car at that time. Ford Media Center |
| April 2025 lap; published January 5, 2025 | Updated Mustang GTD — 6:52.072 | Ford said it ranked fourth in the production sports car class. The company described the car as incorporating customer-focused updates. Ford |
| April 2026; announced April 16, 2026 | Mustang GTD Competition — 6:40.835 | Ford placed it sixth on its Pre-Production / Prototype Class leaderboard. Ford also reported a 6:49.337 lap by GTD Competition, driven by Ford Racing engineer Steve Thompson. Ford Racing |
The 2024 result is the one behind the original American-brand production-car headline. The 2025 lap is a quicker production-class result, while the 2026 time is a GTD Competition result in a different class. Raw lap times alone therefore do not establish a like-for-like production-car ranking.
What changed between the 2024 and 2025 production-car laps?
Ford says it reviewed the August 2024 lap second by second, validated changes in a simulator and returned to the Nürburgring in April 2025. Its account, authored by Mustang GTD chief program engineer Greg Goodall, lists these customer-focused updates:

- New Active Spool Valve development.
These are Ford’s descriptions of the changes associated with the 6:52.072 lap; they should not be confused with the separate Competition configuration introduced for the 2026 result.
How the GTD Competition differs
Ford describes the 2026 GTD Competition as a more extensively developed configuration. Its reported changes include output targeted beyond the standard GTD’s 815 hp, wing and front dive-plane modifications, rear carbon-fiber aerodynamic discs, new high-performance tires, magnesium wheels, carbon-fiber bucket seats, a lighter damper system and other weight reductions. Ford has not provided a precise horsepower figure for the Competition in the cited announcement, and these features should not be assumed to be fitted to every customer GTD.

Ford CEO Jim Farley described the Competition as an effort to bridge race cars and road-going supercars. That is Ford’s positioning, not independent evidence of the car’s performance. The company’s reported lap and class placement remain manufacturer claims.
What is the standard 2026 Mustang GTD’s power and top speed?
Ford’s 2026 product page lists the standard Mustang GTD with a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 producing 815 hp and 664 lb-ft, an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and a rear-mounted transaxle. Ford says the layout delivers near-50/50 weight distribution. The listed equipment also includes semi-active suspension, carbon-ceramic brakes, 325-mm front and 345-mm rear Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R tires, and a titanium Akrapovič exhaust. Ford states a 202-mph top speed for the GTD coupe. These are Ford-published specifications, not independently tested figures. Ford Mustang GTD product page

How to interpret the Nürburgring claims
When comparing the GTD’s laps with one another or with another car, keep the vehicle configuration and class attached to each time. The available Ford announcements establish the chronology and Ford’s stated rankings, but they do not provide an independent, controlled comparison across all cars or configurations. The 2026 6:40.835 should not be presented as a production-car class record: Ford identifies it as a GTD Competition lap in the Pre-Production / Prototype Class.
