Ford says that is 11.237 seconds quicker than the Mustang GTD’s earlier 6:52.072 benchmark—but the two times sit in different Nürburgring classes: the new lap is listed in Pre-Production / Prototype, while the earlier one is in Production.
What happened at the Nürburgring?
Ford Racing announced the GTD Competition’s 6:40.835 lap on April 16, 2026. The time places it sixth on the Nürburgring’s Pre-Production / Prototype Class leaderboard, according to Ford. Müller drove the record car.
The improvement over the previous Mustang GTD benchmark is 11.237 seconds: the Nürburgring lists Müller’s 6:52.072 lap on April 9, 2025, in Production Class. That difference is meaningful, but it is not a like-for-like class comparison. The Competition’s result is categorized as a prototype/pre-production entry, not as a Production Class lap.
How does the new time fit the GTD’s record timeline?
| Date | Mustang GTD result | Class or context | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| December 10, 2024 | 6:57.685 | Ford said it was the first car from an American brand to break seven minutes. | Ford |

The times describe specific laps, not a statistical study of vehicle performance. Nürburgring records also depend on the classification and conditions under which a vehicle is entered, so a headline ranking should include the class, driver, and timing convention—not just the number.

What makes a Nürburgring lap an official record?
The Nürburgring says it has recorded, confirmed, and published official Nordschleife record drives since the 2019 season. Its defined lap is 20.832 kilometres, starting and finishing at T13 with a flying start. Timing uses calibrated equipment, and a notary supervises record attempts.
The circuit also describes vehicle approval and documentation of the vehicle’s condition by a neutral testing organization. Series-production-state checks do not apply in the same way to racing cars, special vehicles, and prototypes, which are exempt from that scrutiny. Nürburgring classes follow definitions from Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). Those rules are why the GTD Competition’s Pre-Production / Prototype listing should not be merged with the 2025 GTD Production Class result.

What changed on the GTD Competition?
Ford attributes the faster lap to development in power, aerodynamics, grip, and weight. The company describes the Competition as using a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 with targeted output beyond the original GTD’s 815 horsepower. “Targeted” matters: Ford’s announcement does not state a final Competition horsepower figure.
- Powertrain: Ford says it revised hardware and used more aggressive tuning.
- Aerodynamics: Ford lists rear-wing modifications, secondary front dive planes, and rear carbon-fiber aero discs.
- Grip: Ford says the car uses new high-performance tires; its announcement does not identify them by model.
- Weight: Ford names magnesium wheels, carbon bucket seats, and a lighter damper system as weight-saving measures.
These are the manufacturer’s descriptions of the Competition and its development. Ford’s standard 2026 Mustang GTD page lists a supercharged 5.2-liter V8, 815 hp, an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, and a 202 mph top speed for the standard GTD. Those standard-car specifications should not be treated as the Competition’s final output or as a complete equipment list for the record attempt.

Is the GTD Competition going on sale?
Ford says the GTD Competition is planned as a limited, serialized, street-legal special edition and that it is reopening the application window for North American customers. An application is not a guarantee of purchase, and Ford’s announcement does not establish that a particular car is currently available. Availability and application details can change; consult Ford Racing’s announcement for the latest terms.
Why did Ford return to the Green Hell?
The 2024 GTD run first broke the seven-minute barrier for an American-brand car, according to Ford. The subsequent 2025 Production Class lap improved the GTD benchmark, and the 2026 Competition entry pushed the time lower with a different class designation. Ford president and CEO Jim Farley framed the return as a response to its earlier challenge: “When we said, ‘Game On,’ we meant it.”

Ford Racing global director Mark Rushbrook described the connection between track work and road cars this way: “The Nürburgring proves that our motorsport lessons don’t stay on the track—they are engineered directly into our road cars.” Those are company statements; they are not independent assessments of the car’s road performance.
