The Ford Mustang GTD Competition recorded a Ford-reported 6:40.835 lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife on April 17, 2026. Ford places it sixth on the circuit’s pre-production/prototype leaderboard. That is a Competition result—not a standard production Mustang GTD record—and purchase applications depend on where you live.
What Nürburgring time did the Mustang GTD Competition set?
Ford says the Mustang GTD Competition completed the Nordschleife in 6:40.835, driven by Ford Racing and Multimatic factory driver Dirk Müller. Ford also reports that engineer Steve Thompson recorded 6:49.337 in the Competition. These are manufacturer-reported times; Ford’s reviewed announcement does not provide a full independent timing methodology for the 2026 run. Ford’s April 17, 2026 announcement describes the result as sixth on the Nürburgring Pre-Production / Prototype Class leaderboard.
The distinction matters: the 6:40.835 belongs to the GTD Competition, which Ford identifies as a pre-production/prototype entry. It should not be presented as the lap time of an ordinary production-spec Mustang GTD or as an unqualified production-car record.
How the GTD lap record changed
| Date | Ford-reported lap | Car and context |
|---|---|---|
| December 10, 2024 | 6:57.685 | Original Mustang GTD lap; Ford called it the first sub-seven-minute lap by a car from an American brand. |
| May 7, 2025 | 6:52.072 | Updated standard GTD benchmark after customer-focused refinements; cited by Ford as the time the Competition improved upon. |
| April 17, 2026 | 6:40.835 | GTD Competition; Ford-reported sixth place on the pre-production/prototype leaderboard. |
Ford describes the Nordschleife as 12.9 miles long with 73 turns. The lap figures and leaderboard placement above are Ford-reported; the car, class and date differ, so the progression is useful context rather than a like-for-like production-car comparison. Ford’s record announcement includes the Competition result and earlier GTD times.

What changed on the GTD Competition?
Ford attributes the faster lap to added engine output, aerodynamic revisions, new high-performance tires and weight-saving hardware. The company says Competition engine hardware and more aggressive tuning targeted output above the standard GTD’s 815 horsepower, but it has not published a final Competition horsepower figure in the reviewed announcement.
- Aerodynamics: a modified rear wing, secondary front dive planes and rear carbon-fiber aero discs.
- Weight reduction: magnesium wheels, carbon bucket seats and a lighter damper system.
- Powertrain development: engine hardware updates and more aggressive tuning, with a target above the standard GTD’s published output.
- Grip: new high-performance tires.
How the standard Mustang GTD is specified
Ford lists the standard Mustang GTD with a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 producing 815 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque, and a top speed of 202 mph. Those are standard-GTD figures, not confirmed Competition specifications. Ford also describes the standard car as having active aerodynamics, a dry-sump oil system, semi-active dampers and an eight-speed dual-clutch transaxle. Equipment and availability may vary by market and version. See Ford’s 2026 Mustang GTD page and its September 2024 specification announcement.
