The Ford Interceptor was a 2007 concept for a large, rear-drive performance sedan—not a production car. Ford unveiled a show prototype with a 400-horsepower V8, a six-speed manual and room for four. The concept was built for display; the sedan was never put on sale.

What was the Ford Interceptor?

Ford announced the Interceptor concept on December 31, 2006, ahead of its appearance at the 2007 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Ford presented it as a modern take on the sporty American sedans of the 1960s: a four-door with generous proportions and muscle-car character.

Freeman Thomas, then Ford’s director of North American Strategic Design, called it “a pure sedan that speaks to performance car lovers everywhere.” The phrase “never built” needs a distinction: Ford did construct a show concept, but it never became a production sedan.

The concept was separate from Ford’s production Police Interceptor vehicles. Despite the shared name, the show car was not a police package or a consumer model that buyers could order.

How was the concept designed?

The Interceptor’s proportions emphasized a long hood and rear-drive stance. Ford described a low cabin, high beltline, substantial body surfaces, and a horizontal three-bar grille. A powered clamshell hood incorporated a “shaker” feature.

Ford called its recurring square-circle design motif “squircles,” using it inside and outside the car. The cabin paired black leather with metal finishes; four low-back bucket seats featured exposed-edge seams and caramel-colored stitching. Contemporary coverage also noted simple interior forms and retractable headrests.

What engine and specifications did Ford propose?

These are specifications Ford published for the concept, not specifications for a production Interceptor.

Item Published concept specification
Engine Ford Racing 5.0-liter Cammer V8
Output 400 horsepower
Fuel capability E-85 compatible
Transmission Six-speed manual
Overall length 201.6 inches
Wheelbase 120.8 inches
Overall width 76.4 inches
Height at curb 54.8 inches
Front / rear track 66.5 / 67.8 inches

Ford described the Cammer as an upgraded version of the modular engine used in the contemporary Mustang GT. Contemporary coverage characterized the concept as Mustang-based, with 22-inch wheels and a solid rear axle. Ford’s published suspension details specified independent double-wishbone front suspension and a three-link rear design with a Panhard rod.

The rear-wheel-drive layout and manual gearbox suited the concept’s driver-focused pitch. Thomas described the car as having few layers between driver and road, with restraint in its use of technology. That was a design intention, not a road-test finding.

What safety features did the concept show?

Ford said the concept had a patented four-point “belt and suspenders” restraint design for all four seats, as well as inflatable rear seat belts. The company also cautioned that technical challenges remained before these technologies could be used. They should be understood as concept features under development, not confirmed production equipment or evidence of a tested safety result.

Why didn’t the Ford Interceptor become a production sedan?

The Interceptor remained a design and engineering proposal rather than a model Ford announced for sale. Cars.com reported in a 2015 retrospective that Ford never considered putting it into production. The available account does not establish a planned launch date, a production decision process or a customer-car road test.

That distinction also explains why the concept’s figures should not be treated as a specification sheet for a vehicle buyers could purchase. Ford published dimensions and a proposed powertrain for the show car; there was no production Interceptor sedan to order.
