Ford Fathom: Price, Timing and the New Assembly System Behind Its Electric Truck

Ford’s roughly $30,000 electric truck now has a name: Fathom. Ford announced a $28,350 starting MSRP for the standard-range version, before taxes, title, registration and fees, and says preorders are expected to open in early 2027, with customer vehicles to follow later that year. The pickup is also the first announced model built around Ford’s new Universal EV Production System, which assembles the front, rear and battery/interior in parallel before joining them.

What is Ford’s $30,000 electric truck called?

It is the Ford Fathom, a midsize electric pickup and the first announced vehicle on Ford’s Universal EV Platform. Ford initially described the truck in August 2025 with a target starting price of about $30,000. In August 2026, it announced the Fathom name and a more specific starting MSRP of $28,350 for the standard-range battery version. That MSRP excludes taxes, title, registration and fees. Ford’s 2025 announcement and 2026 name and price announcement establish the sequence.

When can you preorder the Ford Fathom?

Ford says preorders are expected to begin in early 2027, and customer vehicles are expected later in 2027. Those are planned milestones, not confirmation of an order opening or retail delivery. Ford separately said production-qualified prototype builds were on track for the first quarter of 2027; prototype builds are not the same as customer production or delivery. Ford’s preorder announcement and Louisville plant update describe these distinct dates.

How Ford’s new assembly system works

Ford calls its approach the Universal EV Production System. Instead of moving a substantially assembled vehicle down one sequential line, the system divides assembly into three parallel branches. Ford founder and CEO Jim Farley described the concept in 2025: “We transformed the traditional assembly line into a tree with three main branches.”

Three branches built in parallel

  • Front structure: assembled as its own section.
  • Rear structure: assembled separately from the front.
  • Battery and interior: the structural battery is combined with seats, consoles and carpeting.

Once the branches are assembled, Ford says they are joined to form the vehicle. The battery serves as the floor and is installed from below. Large aluminum unicastings form the front and rear structures; Ford says these replace many stamped and welded components and let teams begin work without waiting for a complete body shell. Ford’s explanation of the production system and its plant progress report describe the method.

What the speed claims mean

Ford’s August 2026 plant update gives two different assembly-time comparisons. The company estimates that the system could make Fathom assembly 40% faster than assembly of Louisville Assembly Plant’s current products. Ford also says that time savings are partly reinvested in insourcing and automation, resulting in net assembly time that is 15% faster. These are Ford’s estimates, not independently measured results from customer production. Ford’s account of the Louisville system sets out both figures.

What Ford has announced about the truck

Ford has released a few broad product details, but not a complete buyer specification sheet in the sources available here. The published claims should be read as Ford’s descriptions rather than independent measurements.

  • Battery: Ford says Fathom will use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) prismatic batteries. The company said its BlueOval Battery Park Michigan facility was on track to ship LFP batteries in 2026 for the truck; that statement does not establish that shipments have begun. Ford’s battery-facility update gives the status.
  • Cabin, bed and pace: Ford’s 2025 description said the truck would be as quick as a Mustang EcoBoost and offer more passenger volume than a 2025 Toyota RAV4, while providing a truck bed and “smart cargo and frunk solutions.” Ford has not supplied measurements in those comparisons in the cited announcement. The original announcement provides the claims.
  • Driver assistance and connectivity: Ford says Fathom will carry hardware for its next generation of BlueCruise. BlueCruise is hands-off, eyes-on driver assistance on designated highways, subject to activation conditions; it is not autonomous driving. Ford also says Fathom will retain Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, offer a digital car key and provide bi-directional power capability. Exact equipment availability and terms should be checked against final vehicle information. Ford’s announcement describes these planned features.
  • Apple Maps: Ford and Apple announced integration for the 2027 Universal EV platform, including intelligent EV routing and battery preconditioning. This is an announced platform integration, not an independently tested Fathom feature. The Ford-Apple announcement outlines the plan.

What Ford has not yet specified

The announcements do not establish Fathom’s EPA range, charging speed, battery capacity, towing rating, payload, warranty, full trim lineup or final equipment. They also do not confirm a longer-range version. Until Ford publishes complete specifications, the $28,350 starting MSRP and the announced standard-range battery are not enough to judge the truck’s capability or compare it fairly with production-ready rivals. Useful comparisons will need to account for price and included equipment, EPA range, charging speed and access, payload and towing, bed and cabin practicality, warranty, and any price difference between battery versions.

Where the new system is being built

Ford is transforming Louisville Assembly Plant for the new process. The company reported a total investment of $5 billion and 4,000 new jobs across Louisville Assembly Plant and BlueOval Battery Park Michigan, and said final assembly at Louisville includes 17,000 feet of conveyor. Ford also says the upgraded plant is planned to use Wi-Fi 7 and private 5G to support more quality checks. These are Ford-reported project figures and facility plans, not independent assessments of production performance. Ford’s August 2026 progress report gives the details. Plant manager Brian McGauley recalled that, after the factory was gutted in February 2026, “If you stood in the middle of the factory floor, you could see all four walls.”

Why Ford is concentrating on this platform

In December 2025, Ford said the first Universal EV vehicle would be a connected midsize pickup assembled at Louisville beginning in 2027. It also said it was concentrating North American EV development on the platform and ending plans for selected larger EVs whose business case had weakened. That context helps explain why the Fathom and the new manufacturing method are being presented together: Ford is tying a lower-priced electric truck to a production system it expects to use for its Universal EV program. Ford’s December 2025 announcement describes the strategy.
