Ford’s Fathom could be an affordable electric truck, but the company still has to deliver its price, production plan and launch timing.

Ford’s Fathom is a new midsize electric truck priced to start at $28,350 in the U.S., with preorders planned for early 2027. It could help Ford reset its electric-vehicle business—but the company still has to prove it can build the truck at scale, at cost, and on time. Ford CEO Jim Farley has acknowledged how difficult that will be.

What is the name of Ford’s new midsize electric truck?

It is the Ford Fathom, the first vehicle Ford says will be built on its Universal EV Platform. Ford announced the truck on August 6, 2026, describing it as a vehicle designed for a customer whose needs and budget differ from those of a traditional truck buyer. The name followed a nine-month process; Ford says “fathom” evokes both measuring depth and understanding. Ford’s announcement is the source for the vehicle’s name, positioning, price and announced features.

How much will the Fathom cost, and when can I pre-order?

Ford’s U.S. announcement lists a starting MSRP of $28,350 for the standard-range version, before taxes, title, registration and fees. Ford says preorders are expected to begin in early 2027. Both the price and preorder timing are forward-looking announcements, not a final on-sale or delivery schedule.

Market and incentive terms matter: Ford of Canada displays a price of C$38,690 that includes a C$4,000 federal Electric Vehicle Affordability Program incentive, subject to eligibility and available funding. The Canadian listing excludes dealer fees, options, taxes, registration-related costs and other charges; Ford says the incentive’s eligibility, funding and amount may change. That Canadian figure is not directly equivalent to the U.S. MSRP. Ford of Canada’s Fathom listing provides the Canadian price context.

What technology and features has Ford announced?

Ford says the Fathom will seat five and have a high-resolution touchscreen, a front trunk (frunk), a bed, digital key and bidirectional power capability. The company projects passenger volume greater than a Toyota RAV4; that is Ford’s comparison, not an independently verified measurement.

Ford also says every Fathom will be BlueCruise-capable and support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It describes BlueCruise as hands-off, eyes-on driver assistance for designated highways, with next-generation Apple Maps integration. “Capable” describes Ford’s announced equipment and feature plan; the announcement does not establish activation terms or independently demonstrate performance. Ford’s feature announcement does not provide final range, battery capacity, DC fast-charging rate, towing rating or a complete trim lineup, so those specifications should not be assumed.

Why does Ford’s launch plan carry so much weight?

The Fathom is more than a new model: it is the first vehicle planned for a new platform and production approach. Ford’s August 13, 2026 update said Louisville Assembly Plant was undergoing a $2 billion overhaul for the Universal EV Production System. Ford said prototype builds using production-qualified parts were on track to begin in Q1 2027, with customer vehicles to follow later in 2027. These were company plans, not confirmation that those milestones have since been achieved. Ford’s Louisville plant update describes the work.

A different assembly sequence

Ford says the system assembles three major sections—the front clip, rear clip and battery—and uses large aluminum castings in place of many individual stamped and welded pieces. The company’s rationale is that parallel work on those sections can simplify assembly and improve manufacturing efficiency. That is Ford’s explanation of the intended process, not evidence yet of achieved output, cost savings or launch readiness.

Ford’s platform page reports that the plant project involved removing 25,000 gross tons of scrap, installing 17,000 feet of conveyor in final assembly and pouring 230,000 square feet of concrete. Those are facility-construction figures, not Fathom production volumes or proof that customer vehicles are ready to ship. Ford’s Universal EV Platform page lists those project figures.

What has Jim Farley said about getting the launch right?

InsideEVs reported on October 1, 2026, that Ford CEO Jim Farley called the effort “a heck of an effort to launch this at scale, at cost, on time.” The same report quoted him saying Ford had not “landed the plane on mass production of UEV” yet. The remarks capture the central risk: a promising price and new manufacturing system only matter if Ford can turn them into a product customers can actually buy on the terms it has announced. InsideEVs’ report, hosted by Yahoo, is the source for the quotes and its account of the challenge.

InsideEVs also reported that Ford engineers studying BYD vehicles identified a 20% battery-cost advantage and that Ford responded by rethinking motors, gearboxes and inverters rather than accepting the gap. That figure is InsideEVs’ report of the comparison, not an audited statistic published in Ford’s Fathom announcement.

The stakes extend beyond this truck. In May 2026, Axios reported that Ford’s Long Beach EV team was developing a system the company hoped to replicate in other factories and potentially use across a broader vehicle family. Axios also reported that Ford had written off $19.5 billion in EV investments, and quoted Farley saying, “If you don’t make the right bet, the company will not exist.” Those are Axios’s historical reporting and quotation, not figures from Ford’s Fathom announcement. Axios’s May 2026 report provides that context.

What remains unknown about the Fathom?

Ford has announced an entry price, a preorder window and a set of planned features, but the reviewed announcement does not establish several specifications buyers will need to judge the truck against alternatives:

  • Final EPA range and battery capacity
  • DC fast-charging rate
  • Towing capacity
  • Final trims and their prices
  • A confirmed customer-delivery date
  • Fathom-specific charger compatibility or charging equipment

Ford’s preorder and production timing remain forward-looking. Until final specifications and ordering details are published, comparisons should focus on what is actually announced: market-specific price and what it includes, preorder timing, passenger and cargo space, bidirectional power, driver-assistance terms, and Ford’s ability to deliver at the stated cost and scale.
