For the 2026 U.S. Ford F-150, the 3.5L EcoBoost is a conventional twin-turbo gasoline V6; the 3.5L PowerBoost is a full-hybrid V6. Ford lists more horsepower and torque for PowerBoost, but a higher maximum available tow rating for EcoBoost. PowerBoost also offers available onboard electrical power, so the better choice depends on your truck’s exact ratings and how you plan to use it.
What do EcoBoost and PowerBoost mean?
EcoBoost is Ford’s name for turbocharged gasoline engines, not one specific engine. The 2026 F-150 lineup includes EcoBoost engines in more than one displacement. PowerBoost, by contrast, names the F-150’s 3.5L full-hybrid V6 powertrain.
This comparison focuses on the 3.5L versions. Ford describes the 3.5L EcoBoost as a V6 with twin intercooled turbochargers and lists the 3.5L PowerBoost separately as a full hybrid. [Ford 2026 F-150 features]

Ford’s 2026 feature page publishes the horsepower and torque figures, while its specifications list the maximum available towing figures. These are manufacturer figures, not results from independent testing. The tow numbers are ceilings for eligible configurations, not ratings guaranteed for every truck. Which one can tow more?
On Ford’s 2026 maximum-available figures, the 3.5L EcoBoost has the higher tow ceiling: 13,500 lb versus 11,600 lb for PowerBoost. That does not mean every EcoBoost truck can tow 13,500 lb, or that every PowerBoost is rated for 11,600 lb. Ford says capacity varies significantly with configuration, including cab size, accessories and passengers.
For a specific truck and trailer, use the rating that applies to that exact configuration. Compare the trailer’s loaded weight with the truck-specific towing information, and account for passengers and cargo rather than choosing by engine torque alone. The door-jamb payload label is also important: towing uses payload capacity when people, cargo and trailer tongue weight are carried by the truck.

How should payload affect the choice?
Payload is a separate limit from towing capacity. Ford’s 2025 F-150 page listed maximum payloads of 2,440 lb for the 3.5L EcoBoost and 1,750 lb for PowerBoost. Those are 2025 model-year maximums, not universal figures and not a substitute for checking a 2026 truck’s label. [Ford 2025 F-150]
Because payload varies with the truck’s configuration, check the payload label on the individual vehicle. A trailer may be within the truck’s tow rating while its tongue weight, passengers and cargo together exceed the available payload.

What does PowerBoost add?
PowerBoost’s full-hybrid powertrain is the central distinction from the conventional gasoline EcoBoost. Ford also lists available 7.2 kW Pro Power Onboard for the 2026 F-150. It can make PowerBoost worth considering if you need the truck to provide electrical power at a worksite or campsite, but the system is available equipment rather than standard on every PowerBoost. Confirm the installed feature and output on the specific truck. [Ford 2026 F-150 features]

Yes. Ford’s 2025 F-150 page listed PowerBoost at 430 hp and 570 lb-ft; its 2026 feature material lists 430 hp and 578 lb-ft. Do not carry a specification from one model year into another without checking the relevant year and configuration. [Ford 2025 F-150] [Ford 2026 F-150 features]

Ford has also announced that a new 3.0L EcoBoost V6 will replace the 2.7L EcoBoost as the standard engine for the 2027 F-150. That announced lineup change is another reason not to treat “EcoBoost” as a single fixed engine or assume today’s lineup applies indefinitely. [Ford’s 2027 F-150 announcement]
Is EcoBoost or PowerBoost better for you?
- Consider the 3.5L EcoBoost if its rating for the exact truck meets your towing needs; Ford’s 2026 maximum available tow figure is higher than PowerBoost’s.
- Consider PowerBoost if you want a full-hybrid powertrain or need the available 7.2 kW Pro Power Onboard feature.
- For either engine, check the actual truck for model year, engine, cab, axle, installed equipment, truck-specific tow rating and door-jamb payload label.
The published specifications do not establish which powertrain will deliver better real-world fuel economy, greater reliability or lower long-term ownership costs for a particular driver or towing cycle. Those outcomes should not be assumed from the names or headline output figures alone.
