Ford ended production of the current-generation, all-electric F-150 Lightning in 2025. The company says it is shifting capital away from a large-EV roadmap that no longer had a profitable path under current adoption, cost, pricing, policy and capacity conditions.
The Lightning name is not being retired. Ford has announced a next-generation extended-range electric pickup, while a new wholly owned subsidiary, Ford Energy, will use U.S. battery capacity to build large commercial energy-storage systems.
What Ford actually ended
Ford’s December 2025 strategy announcement concluded production of the current-generation F-150 Lightning. A related SEC filing says the decision was made on December 11, 2025, as part of a broader effort to rationalize EV manufacturing capacity and the product roadmap.
Ford said employees from the Lightning operation would move to the Dearborn Truck Plant to support a third crew producing gas and hybrid trucks after the November Novelis fires. That is a manufacturing redeployment, not an announcement that Ford is leaving the pickup market.

Is the F-150 Lightning discontinued?
The current battery-electric generation is discontinued in the manufacturing sense: Ford says its production ended in 2025. The announcement does not establish how long dealer inventory will remain available, and it does not announce any change to warranty or service terms for trucks already sold.
Why Ford ended production
Ford said the economics of its large-EV plan had changed. Its stated reasons were:
- Lower-than-expected EV adoption: Industrywide demand for electric vehicles was not developing as quickly as Ford had anticipated.
- High program costs: Ford no longer saw a profitable path for the large-EV roadmap at its planned scale.
- Changing pricing dynamics: EV pricing and competitive conditions made expected returns less attractive.
- Policy and regulatory changes: Changes in the policy environment altered the assumptions behind the product and investment plan.
- Underused EV capacity: Manufacturing capacity dedicated to EVs was not being utilized at the level Ford had planned.
CEO Jim Farley described the decision as “a customer-driven shift to create a stronger, more resilient and more profitable Ford.” He said capital would be redirected toward Ford Pro, trucks and vans, hybrids, affordable EVs and the company’s battery-storage business.

What replaces the current Lightning
Ford says the next-generation F-150 Lightning will be an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV), assembled at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center. It will still be propelled entirely by electric motors; a high-power generator will supply electricity when needed rather than mechanically driving the wheels.
Ford estimates more than 700 miles of range for the next-generation truck. Doug Field, Ford’s chief EV, digital and design officer, said the generator is intended to preserve the Lightning’s near-instant torque and electric driving while giving it long-distance and towing capability.
Ford has not disclosed the launch date, pricing, detailed specifications or ordering process for this EREV. The announced range is an estimate, not a certified EPA figure.

What Ford Energy is building
Ford Energy, formally introduced on May 11, 2026, is a wholly owned Ford subsidiary focused on battery-energy-storage systems (BESS) assembled in the United States. Its target customers are utilities, data centers, and large industrial and commercial users—not individual vehicle buyers.
Ford plans to repurpose existing battery capacity in Glendale, Kentucky, and invest approximately $2 billion over two years in systems rated at 5 MWh or more, lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) prismatic cells, modules and containerized equipment. First customer deliveries are planned for late 2027, with a target of at least 20 GWh of annual deployment.

The flagship product is a standardized 20-foot containerized system built around 512 Ah LFP prismatic cells. Ford lists two configurations:
| Configuration | Stated duration | Common equipment |
|---|---|---|
| FE-250 | Two-hour system | Liquid-cooled thermal management and a battery-management system |
| FE-450 | Four-hour system | Liquid-cooled thermal management and a battery-management system |
Ford has not stated in the cited announcement whether the FE-250 and FE-450 labels correspond to particular power ratings in megawatts. The two-hour and four-hour descriptions identify the listed storage-duration configurations.
The financial cost of the reset
Ford’s December 2025 release projected approximately $19.5 billion in special items, including about $5.5 billion in cash effects. Most of the cash payments were expected in 2026, with the remainder in 2027.
The company’s SEC filing provided additional estimates. These figures describe different elements of the restructuring and are not a consumer price list:

What the change means for readers
If you own a current Lightning
Ford’s announcement concerns production and future product strategy. It does not state that existing trucks lose warranty coverage, parts support or software service. Those matters should be confirmed through Ford’s owner and dealer channels for a specific vehicle.
If you are shopping for an electric F-150
The current-generation truck will not continue in production beyond 2025. Ford’s replacement is planned as an EREV rather than a pure battery-electric successor, and Ford has not published its launch timing, price or final specifications.
If you operate a data center, utility or industrial site
Ford Energy is a planned commercial supplier, not a currently documented retail product line. Its stated schedule calls for first deliveries in late 2027 and at least 20 GWh of annual deployment, subject to the company’s manufacturing ramp and customer contracts.
Bottom line
Ford ended the current F-150 Lightning because slower EV adoption, unfavorable cost and pricing conditions, policy changes and excess EV capacity undermined the profitability of its large-EV plan. The company is keeping the Lightning name for a future generator-backed electric truck while redirecting battery manufacturing toward Ford Energy’s commercial storage systems.
