Both engines displace 429 cubic inches, but the Boss 429 and the 429 Super Cobra Jet (SCJ) are distinct designs—not versions of the same engine separated by trim. The Boss is Ford’s competition-focused design, defined by aluminum heads and crescent-shaped combustion chambers. The SCJ is a wedge-head 429 with competition-oriented valvetrain and internal hardware.
How the Boss 429 and 429 SCJ differ
| Feature | Boss 429 | 429 Super Cobra Jet |
|---|---|---|
| Displacement | 429 cubic inches | 429 cubic inches |
| Heads and chambers | Aluminum heads with chambers Ford describes as crescent-shaped | Conventional 429 wedge-head architecture |
| Documented hardware | Boss S and T versions differed; Ford notes shorter, beefier connecting rods in the S version than in the T | Mechanical cam, adjustable rocker studs, stamped rocker arms, pushrod guide plates, forged-aluminum pistons, and four-bolt main caps on journals 2–4 |
| Role in Ford’s account | Competition design: the S version served NASCAR homologation, while the later T version was intended for street use | A competition-oriented street 429 that could be modified for racing |
These distinctions are documented in Ford Performance’s 429 engine-history overview. Ford uses “crescent-shaped” for the Boss chamber; “semi-hemi” is a common shorthand, but it is not the wording to rely on when describing Ford’s specific design.
What made the Boss 429 a separate design?
The Boss 429’s defining feature is its cylinder-head and combustion-chamber architecture. Ford describes it as an all-out competition design with aluminum heads and crescent-shaped chambers. It was installed in the 1969–1970 Boss 429 Mustang as part of Ford’s effort to homologate the engine for NASCAR competition.
Ford’s engine-history account distinguishes the initial NASCAR-oriented S engine from the later street-oriented T version. That matters when comparing specifications: “Boss 429” covers more than one version, so a detail about one should not automatically be applied to every Boss 429.

Ford Motor Company reported that 1,359 Boss 429 Mustangs were produced across the 1969 and 1970 model years. Its December 11, 2019 release gives the engine’s output as 380 cv and 610 Nm. Those are Ford’s figures as printed in its Portuguese-language release; “cv” is retained as published rather than silently converted to another horsepower unit. See Ford’s Boss 429 release.
What distinguished the 429 Super Cobra Jet?
The SCJ was part of the conventional wedge-head 429 family, not a Boss 429 with different badges. Ford’s overview identifies the SCJ by its mechanical cam and a group of internal and valvetrain features intended for competition use:

- Brand new 1/24 scale diecast car model of 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 429 Blue die cast model car by Motormax. Brand new box. Real rubber tires.
- Four-bolt main caps on main journals 2, 3, and 4
- Adjustable, non-positive-stop rocker studs
- Stamped rocker arms and pushrod guide plates
- Forged-aluminum pistons
Taken together, those features are more useful for identifying the SCJ than displacement alone: both engines are 429s, but their heads, chambers, and documented component packages differ.
Are Boss 429 and SCJ parts interchangeable?
Do not assume that a part listed for a 429 SCJ fits a Boss 429. Ford Performance’s current bare Super Cobra Jet cylinder-head listing explicitly excludes Boss 429 applications. Its assembled SCJ head listing also identifies applications and components; these current product pages are fitment guidance for those parts, not proof that the heads were interchangeable as original factory equipment.

Ford also cautions that replacing Ford Performance or production 429 Cobra Jet heads requires new intake-valve notches. That is a machining consideration for the listed replacement-head application, not a claim that an SCJ head becomes suitable for a Boss 429.
How to compare their power ratings
The available Ford release gives Boss 429 output as 380 cv and 610 Nm, but the cited Ford sources do not establish a directly comparable official 429 SCJ output figure. A precise side-by-side horsepower comparison therefore cannot be made from these figures alone. Avoid treating an unsourced SCJ rating—or a converted Boss figure—as if Ford published them as a matched test.

Which name should you use?
Use “Boss 429” for the distinct aluminum-head, crescent-chamber competition engine and its S and T versions. Use “429 Super Cobra Jet” or “429 SCJ” for Ford’s wedge-head 429 variant with its mechanical cam and specified competition hardware. “429” identifies their shared displacement; it does not make the engines synonymous or establish parts compatibility.
