Ford Announces Next-Generation F-150 Lightning EREV With 700+ Miles of Estimated Range

Ford has announced a next-generation F-150 Lightning EREV with more than 700 miles of estimated generator-backed range. Here is what that claim means, what remains unknown, and why it is not a confirmed 2026 EPA range rating.

Ford’s next F-150 Lightning is planned as an extended-range electric truck with more than 700 miles of estimated generator-backed range. The crucial correction: Ford has not announced it as a 2026 model, an EPA-rated 700-mile EV, or an on-sale vehicle.

Ford has announced a next-generation F-150 Lightning that it says is expected to deliver more than 700 miles of estimated generator-backed range. That is not the same as 700 miles of battery-only driving, and it is not an EPA-certified range figure. It is also not yet a confirmed 2026 model: Ford has not announced a model year, order date, price, specifications, or a specific availability date.

What Ford’s 700-plus-mile claim means

The future Lightning will use extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) architecture. Ford says electric motors will propel the truck, while a high-power generator supplies extended-range support. In practical terms, the truck is intended to drive electrically, with onboard generation extending the distance it can cover instead of relying solely on the energy stored in its battery.

That distinction matters because the headline number is Ford’s estimate of total generator-backed range. It should not be described as:

Ford’s announcement supports electric-motor propulsion plus generator-backed range. It does not yet provide the technical detail needed to define every aspect of the system, including the generator’s engine, fuel tank, battery capacity, charging performance, or fuel consumption.

Why this is a major change from the outgoing Lightning

The previous F-150 Lightning was a battery-electric pickup. In qualifying configurations, Ford historically advertised up to 320 miles of EPA-estimated range. That number and the future EREV’s 700-plus-mile estimate are useful context, but they are not a direct apples-to-apples comparison: one is a published EPA estimate for a battery-electric truck, while the other is Ford’s estimated total range for an electric truck with generator support.

An EREV could be especially relevant to pickup buyers who like electric-motor driving but regularly face long highway trips, rural routes, towing demands, or limited charging access. Still, real-world usefulness will depend on details Ford has not released: battery-only range, generator behavior, charging speed, towing range, payload, fuel economy, and the final certification results.

What is confirmed

  • Ford announced the future F-150 Lightning EREV on December 15, 2025.
  • The truck is intended to be propelled 100% by electric motors.
  • A high-power generator will provide extended-range support.
  • Ford expects more than 700 miles of total generator-backed range.
  • Ford says assembly will take place at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, Michigan.
  • Ford says the current-generation Lightning is no longer available in its current form, while support for existing owners continues.

What remains unannounced

Ford has deliberately left the most purchase-critical details for a later announcement. Buyers should not assume any of the following until Ford publishes final information:

A purported 2026 Lightning order guide that circulates online describes battery-electric configurations and a 123 kWh battery, but it is not Ford’s public announcement of the 700-plus-mile EREV. It should not be used to assign those details to the future generator-backed truck.

What current Lightning owners should know

Ford says it will continue software updates, warranty coverage, repairs, and replacement-parts support for existing Lightning owners even though the truck is no longer available to order in its current form.

For owners of the existing battery-electric Lightning, Ford’s branded Fast Charging Adapter (SKU VRK9Z10E826A) is the relevant current accessory for access to compatible NACS public fast chargers, including Tesla Superchargers. It is an accessory for current-generation owner use; Ford has not confirmed the future EREV’s charging hardware or whether this adapter will apply to it. The adapter also has no connection to the announced 700-plus-mile range estimate.

Should shoppers wait?

Shoppers specifically interested in an electric F-150 with substantially more trip flexibility should wait for Ford’s formal EREV specifications and certification disclosures. The announced concept is meaningful, but the unanswered questions affect cost, charging, towing, operating expenses, and whether the truck fits a particular use case.

Anyone needing a truck sooner should evaluate vehicles that are actually available rather than treating the future Lightning’s range estimate as an orderable product specification. For the announced truck, the accurate takeaway is straightforward: Ford has committed to a next-generation Lightning EREV with more than 700 miles of estimated generator-backed range, but its final configuration and arrival date remain to be announced.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the next F-150 Lightning rated for 700 miles of electric range?

No. Ford says the future Lightning will use electric motors for propulsion and a high-power generator for extended-range support. The more-than-700-mile figure is Ford’s estimated total generator-backed range, not battery-only range.

Can I order the 700-mile F-150 Lightning now?

No specific availability date has been announced. Ford has also not publicly confirmed the model year, pricing, order timing, or final specifications.

What happens to support for current F-150 Lightning owners?

Ford says the current Lightning is no longer available in its current form, but existing owners continue to receive software updates, warranty coverage, repair, and replacement-parts support.

The Bottom Line

Ford’s future F-150 Lightning EREV promises more than 700 miles of estimated total generator-backed range—not 700 EPA-rated battery miles. It is a real announced program, but not yet an orderable, fully specified 2026 truck.
