Designed for center-pivot and lateral-move systems, SWIFT uses a sinusoidal tread intended to reduce rutting. The announcement’s rut comparison is company-reported test data, not an independently verified result for every farm or operating condition.
What Firestone announced
Bridgestone Americas said Firestone Agriculture had reached a distribution agreement with Shark Wheel for SWIFT, with sales planned through Firestone Ag’s certified dealers. The February 14, 2023 announcement describes the wheel as an air-free option for mobile irrigation equipment. The announcement establishes the launch arrangement, not whether the product is currently stocked or the distribution relationship remains unchanged.
At the time, Bridgestone Integrated Agricultural Tire Business President Tony Orlando said rutting was a major pain point for farmers using irrigation systems. Shark Wheel CEO Zack Fleishman said the partnership was intended to pair air-free technology with Firestone’s dealer service and quality control. Both statements were made by company representatives in the launch announcement.
How SWIFT is designed to work
Air-free construction and modular paddles
SWIFT stands for “Sine Wave Innovative Flotation and Traction.” Rather than relying on an inflated casing, the wheel uses spring-steel tread paddles overmolded with rubber. The modular design was described as allowing repair or customization of high-traction paddles in under 60 seconds; that is a manufacturer description, not an independently documented repair-time guarantee.

Sinusoidal tread and rut filling
The paddles form a sinusoidal, or wave-like, tread. According to Firestone, the tread creates a helical path between out-of-phase wheels on an irrigation tower: a trailing wheel can move soil into ruts left by the leading wheel. The pattern is bidirectional, so it is designed to work when equipment travels in either direction.
Successful Farming’s launch coverage reported that the paddles flex and that an elevated-paddle high-traction option was available for difficult or gumbo soil. It also reported a rolling circumference of 140 inches. These are launch-era product details; buyers should verify available configurations and fitment for their equipment.

What the rut comparison does—and does not—show
Bridgestone’s announcement attributed a comparison to Shark Wheel test data: a pneumatic tire reportedly made a 14-inch rut, while SWIFT made a 1-inch rut. Shark Wheel’s company page describes a similar comparison. The manufacturer’s SWIFT page is another source for the company’s product claims.
The cited announcement and trade coverage do not provide a complete test protocol or establish that the result applies across soil types, loads, irrigation systems, or operating conditions. The figures should therefore be read as a company-reported test comparison, not a general performance guarantee or an independent head-to-head finding.

What to confirm before considering a purchase

- Fitment and swing arms: The launch coverage said swing-arm performance testing had not been thorough and that SWIFT’s warranty did not cover swing-arm installation. The available sources do not provide complete fitment specifications or current warranty terms. Ask a current dealer to confirm compatibility and coverage for the exact pivot or lateral-move setup.
- Operating conditions and tread choice: Discuss soil, load, travel direction, and whether a high-traction paddle configuration is available and suitable for the application. The cited sources do not offer comprehensive comparative testing against other airless products.
- Maintenance trade-offs: Air-free construction removes the need to maintain tire pressure and addresses puncture-related flats, but it does not establish that the wheel is maintenance-free. Confirm repair procedures, replacement parts, and service support with the dealer.
How it differs from a conventional irrigation tire
Firestone’s conventional Irrigation Special is described as a bias R-1 tire with a heavy rubber compound and 23-degree angled tread bars intended to provide traction on soft soil. Firestone’s product page provides that category context, but the sources do not establish a tested, direct comparison between the Irrigation Special and Shark Wheel SWIFT. A buyer comparing the two should evaluate fitment, soil conditions, maintenance needs, cost, and warranty with a dealer rather than treating the rut figures as a universal ranking.
