Its instantly recognizable side strakes were more than a styling flourish: Ferrari says they helped address the placement of the rearward side radiators and guide airflow along the body.
When did the Ferrari Testarossa debut?
The Testarossa was unveiled at the 1984 Paris Motor Show. Ferrari’s official history records the debut and describes the car as a design shaped around its mechanical layout. Because the unveiling was in 1984, the anniversary fell in 2024—not 2026. Ferrari’s Testarossa history
Why does the Ferrari Testarossa have side strakes?
The Testarossa’s broad horizontal strakes were connected to the way its cooling system was packaged. Ferrari says the side-mounted radiators were positioned toward the rear; the side treatment helped direct airflow along the body. The striking profile therefore served an engineering purpose as well as giving the car its distinctive appearance.
Ferrari also explains that horizontal spoilers at the tail concealed elements from view while fitting into the rear’s three-dimensional forms. In the company’s account, the body was crafted by Pininfarina around the car’s mechanical requirements, rather than styled independently of them. Ferrari’s Testarossa history

These are manufacturer-reported specifications; the history page does not identify them as results from an independent road test. Ferrari describes the engine as derived directly from Formula 1. How did the 512 TR follow the Testarossa?
Ferrari identifies the 512 TR as the Testarossa’s successor. Its history says the later car revised aerodynamics and improved cabin comfort while retaining the earlier model’s conceptual framework. Ferrari explains the name as referring to five litres, 12 cylinders and Testa Rossa. The documented comparison is about design, packaging and comfort; it does not establish a lap-time or handling advantage. Ferrari’s 512 TR history

Why does the Testarossa remain a defining 1980s Ferrari?
The Testarossa’s enduring visual identity is inseparable from its engineering story: its side treatment helped accommodate and feed air to rear-positioned radiators, while the body was formed around that mechanical arrangement. That connection between function and a dramatic silhouette is the clearest documented reason the car stands out in Ferrari’s history. Ferrari’s published account supports the design and performance details here, but does not provide a production total or quantify the car’s wider cultural impact.
