The Ferrari 550 Maranello’s V12 is generally regarded as robust when it has been maintained, but age, missing service records and deferred repairs can make a particular car expensive to put right. The main inspection priorities are belt-service history, fluid leaks, clutch and gearbox behavior, cooling, dampers, corrosion and aging cabin materials. What to check first on a Ferrari 550 Maranello
Start with evidence, not the seller’s reliability claims. Ask for dated invoices and records covering cambelt work, fluids, hoses, clutch and major repairs. A service book alone may not show what was actually done; missing documentation can leave you budgeting for overdue maintenance.
Use the same checks on every car you compare: records, leaks, clutch, gearbox, cooling, suspension, body and cabin. A documented car with visible age-related faults can be a more transparent proposition than a superficially tidy car with no history, but only an inspection can establish which is the better buy.
Pre-purchase inspection checklist
- Confirm the date and scope of the last belt service, and ask for invoices.

Engine belts and fluid leaks
Cambelt service and camshaft seals
The 550 has recurring cambelt maintenance. One buyer’s guide describes a three-year interval and says the belts can be accessed without removing the engine. Confirm the applicable schedule, work scope and evidence of completion with a marque specialist. Camshaft seals can leak; guides note that addressing them alongside belt work may be sensible when inspection shows they need attention. evo’s 550 Maranello guide and PistonHeads’ used buying guide discuss these service and leak concerns.
Other leak locations
Look for oil leaks and coolant in the engine V under the inlet manifold, where aging hoses can leak. Buyer’s guides also flag power-steering rack leaks, fuel-tank leaks—particularly on 1997–98 cars in one guide—and transmission oil-cooler pipe leaks. These are places to inspect, not faults that should be assumed on every 550. A specialist can identify the source and determine whether a leak is minor or points to more extensive work.

Clutch and gearbox symptoms
Clutch wear and release bearing
A high bite point, slipping, a heavy pedal or a noisy release bearing warrants investigation. Classic & Sports Car says a clutch may last 40,000–50,000 miles with considerate use; driving style and the car’s condition affect that expectation. evo published an approximate clutch-replacement figure of £3,000. Neither figure guarantees the remaining life or the present cost of a repair.
Gear selection and disengagement
Try the gearbox both cold and warm. Some stiffness when cold is described in buying guides, but persistent crunching or a gear lever that jumps out under acceleration, on throttle lift or during clutch operation deserves specialist diagnosis. PistonHeads published a gearbox-rebuild estimate of around £9,000 and warns that parts availability can make work expensive. That is a historical guide figure, not a quote for a particular car.

Cooling, dampers and vibration
Cooling system
Check that the cooling fans operate and the temperature remains steady. Overheating is a warning to investigate the cooling system rather than a diagnosis of a specific failed part; have a specialist establish the cause before agreeing to a repair.
Leaking dampers
Inspect the dampers for leaks and assess the suspension’s condition. evo’s guide listed replacement dampers at up to £1,500 each and refurbishment by original supplier Bilstein at around £400 each. These are historical UK estimates; availability, labor and the condition of the individual unit affect a current written quote.

Vibration
Vibration can be a clue to a delaminating crank pulley, among other possible causes. Treat it as a reason for diagnosis, not proof that the pulley is at fault.

Fuel tanks, alarm and warning lights
Check carefully for fuel leaks, especially on 1997–98 cars, which one guide specifically identifies as a concern. Missing alarm-controller fobs may involve costly coding; verify what is missing and obtain a current quote. Airbag or alarm warning lights may stem from internal battery failure, described by a buyer’s guide as relatively inexpensive to resolve, but the fault and cost need to be confirmed on the car.

Sticky switches and deteriorating tactile plastics are age-related cabin complaints. Dashboard leather may shrink or peel; evo reported retrimming at up to £2,000. That published figure is a scale indication, not a current upholstery quote.
Bodywork, wheels and tires
Corrosion and paint condition
Inspect aluminum panel edges for bubbling, especially the bonnet’s front underside and the boot lip. Even when corrosion is not structural, bodywork and paint repairs can be costly, so ask an appropriate specialist to assess any affected area and prior repair.
Tire condition and specification
Classic & Sports Car identifies Pirelli P Zero sizes 225/40 and 295/35 ZR18 and gives an expected set life of roughly 10,000–15,000 miles, less with hard driving. Confirm the approved specification and current availability for the particular car before purchase.

How to decide between two 550s
- Compare dated invoices for belt service, fluids, hoses, clutch work and major repairs.
- Inspect both cars for engine, coolant, power-steering, fuel and transmission leaks.
- Drive each car to assess clutch take-up and release-bearing noise, then test gear selection cold and warm.
- Compare cooling behavior, damper condition, corrosion and paint repairs.
- Test cabin switches, warning lights, alarm operation and fobs; inspect dashboard leather.
- Have a Ferrari specialist perform a pre-purchase inspection on each and cost the actual work list in writing.
