Ferrari announced both on 29 April 2025. Each has a manufacturer-rated combined hybrid output of 880 cv, but their body styles and published specifications differ.
What is the difference between the Ferrari 296 Speciale and Speciale A?
| Model | Base car and body style | Roof | Ferrari-published figures |
|---|---|---|---|
| 296 Speciale | 296 GTB-based, mid-rear-engined berlinetta | Fixed roof | 880 cv combined output; 1,410 kg dry weight; 1.60 kg/cv dry weight-to-power ratio |
| 296 Speciale A | 296 GTS-based, mid-rear-engined spider | Retractable hardtop | 880 cv combined output; 1,490 kg dry weight; 7.45 kWh battery; maximum electric range of 25 km; 0–100 km/h in 2.8 seconds; maximum speed above 330 km/h |
The “A” denotes the open-top version: Ferrari describes the Speciale A as a spider, not a separate powertrain variant. Its roof configuration is the main visual and practical distinction. Ferrari’s 296 GTS material says that roof can open or close in 14 seconds at speeds up to 45 km/h; that is 296 GTS roof-system context, not a separately tested Speciale A measurement. How much power does the 296 Speciale make?
Ferrari rates the 296 Speciale’s plug-in-hybrid system at 880 cv combined. It pairs a rear-mid-mounted, 120-degree twin-turbo V6 with an electric motor. Ferrari lists 700 cv for the combustion engine, maximum torque of 755 Nm at 6,000 rpm, and a maximum engine speed of 8,500 rpm. The 296 Speciale A is also rated at 880 cv combined. These are Ferrari’s published specifications, not results from an independent drive or dyno test.
Ferrari’s technical description of the Speciale’s V6 includes titanium connecting rods, reinforced pistons and a lightened crankshaft. The company also cites revised engine-management and boost strategies informed by the 296 Challenge, alongside knock control derived from Formula 1. Those descriptions refer to Ferrari’s engineering claims.

What performance and weight figures has Ferrari published?
296 Speciale
Ferrari lists a dry weight of 1,410 kg and a dry weight-to-power ratio of 1.60 kg/cv for the 296 Speciale. The manufacturer notes that optional content affects the weight figures. Ferrari also says the car’s aerodynamic solutions produce 20% more downforce than the 296 GTB. That percentage is Ferrari’s comparison; it is not an independently measured result here.
296 Speciale A
The Speciale A’s official technical sheet lists 1,490 kg dry weight, 7.45 kWh battery capacity and a maximum electric range of 25 km. Ferrari gives acceleration of 2.8 seconds from 0–100 km/h and 7.3 seconds from 0–200 km/h, plus a maximum speed above 330 km/h. These are manufacturer figures. The sheet qualifies specified power figures by fuel requirements, including 98 RON, and says fuel-consumption and CO₂ data are under homologation; figures should not be treated as independently verified real-world results.

Is the Ferrari 296 Speciale A a convertible?
In everyday terms, yes: the Speciale A is the open-top 296 Speciale. Ferrari calls it a spider and describes it as based on the 296 GTS, with a retractable hardtop. The fixed-roof 296 Speciale is the berlinetta. Buyers choosing between them are principally choosing between an enclosed-cabin configuration and open-air driving, alongside the different body-specific published specifications.

What does Ferrari say changed for the Speciale models?
Ferrari presents the Speciale as a more focused evolution of the 296 GTB, citing aerodynamic changes, weight-saving measures, a dedicated suspension setup and an extra-boost strategy. The 296 Speciale A combines those Speciale attributes with the open-top configuration of the 296 GTS. Ferrari’s materials describe the engineering intent, but the available evidence does not establish an independent ride, handling, comfort or track-time comparison between these cars and their base models.
When were the 296 Speciale and Speciale A announced?
Ferrari announced both models on 29 April 2025. “New” therefore refers to the 2025 announcement, not a claim that the cars have only just been revealed. Ferrari’s Q1 2025 results release also records the unveiling date. Ferrari N.V.’s Q1 2025 results release
