The Ferrari 296 GTB pairs a 2,992 cc, 120-degree V6 with an electric motor in a plug-in hybrid system; the F8 Tributo uses a 3,902 cc, 90-degree turbocharged V8. Ferrari rates the 296 at 830 cv for the complete hybrid system, while its V6 alone produces 663 cv. The F8’s V8 is rated at 720 cv. Ferrari quotes the same 0–100 km/h time for both cars, but gives the 296 the quicker 0–200 km/h time and the F8 the higher stated top speed. Those are manufacturer figures, not results from a verified back-to-back test.

What is the main difference between the 296 GTB and F8 Tributo?

The central distinction is not simply six cylinders against eight. The 296 GTB is a plug-in hybrid: its V6 works with an electric motor, and Ferrari publishes both a combustion-engine output and a higher combined-system output. The F8 Tributo is powered by a turbocharged V8, with no hybrid motor included in its listed powertrain. That means the headline outputs need to be compared carefully: the 296’s 830 cv belongs to the full hybrid system, not to its V6 alone.

Ferrari’s technical sheet specifies a 120-degree, 2,992 cc V6 for the 296 GTB. Its launch announcement, dated 24 June 2021, described the engine as “a new 663 cv 120° V6 coupled with an electric motor capable of delivering a further 122 kW (167 cv).” Ferrari gives the complete system a rating of 830 cv. The 7.45 kWh high-voltage battery is listed in the 296’s technical sheet; the available figures do not establish an electric-only range or charging time.

The F8 Tributo’s technical sheet lists a 90-degree, 3,902 cc turbocharged V8 with maximum power of 720 cv. Ferrari’s sheet specifies 98-octane petrol for that power figure. Ferrari introduced the F8 at the Geneva Motor Show on 5 March 2019, describing it as a 720-horsepower car in its launch coverage.

In practical terms, the two cars represent different powertrain approaches within Ferrari’s mid-engined sports-car line-up. One pairs a smaller-displacement V6 with an electric motor and high-voltage battery; the other relies on a larger-displacement turbocharged V8. The quoted power figures therefore need labels: engine output for the combustion engine, and system output for the hybrid combination. Without that distinction, it is easy to make the 296 sound as though its V6 alone produces 830 cv, which Ferrari’s figures do not say.

How do the official specifications compare?

Figures in the table are from Ferrari’s model technical sheets. Ferrari’s 296 GTB launch announcement also gives the engine and hybrid-system outputs; its F8 launch coverage describes the car’s reveal and power rating. The technical-sheet text does not state the original publication years for every performance figure, so the acceleration, torque, top-speed and weight figures should be treated as the manufacturers’ listed specifications, not as independently dated measurements.

The table is most useful when each row is read on its own terms. The powertrain and displacement rows establish the hardware difference. The power rows separate combustion-engine output from the 296’s complete-system rating. The acceleration and top-speed rows are Ferrari’s published performance claims. Finally, the weight row carries a qualification for each model, so it should not be read as a controlled comparison of identically equipped cars.

There is also a difference in how the output figures are presented. Ferrari lists the F8’s 720 cv as maximum power for its V8, while the 296 has a 663 cv combustion engine and an 830 cv hybrid-system rating. Comparing 720 directly with 830 answers which listed headline number is larger, but it does not compare like with like. For an engine-only comparison, 663 cv and 720 cv are the relevant figures; for the system-level comparison, the 296’s 830 cv is the available figure for the hybrid powertrain.

Does the hybrid V6 make the 296 more powerful?

It depends on what “the engine” means in the comparison. Judged as combustion engines, Ferrari lists the 296’s V6 at 663 cv and the F8’s V8 at 720 cv: the F8 has the higher stated engine-only output. Judged by the full powertrain rating, the 296’s hybrid system is listed at 830 cv. These figures describe different things, so saying simply that “the 296’s V6 makes 830 cv” would be inaccurate.

Ferrari’s 296 launch announcement attributes 122 kW (167 cv) to the electric motor, alongside the V6’s 663 cv. The published combined-system rating is 830 cv, and the technical sheet qualifies it as available with eManettino in Qualify mode. The figures describe Ferrari’s rated components and system; they do not establish that a driver can add the two component ratings in every operating condition or that the full system output is continuously available in every mode.

The F8’s 720 cv figure is the V8’s maximum power rating, with Ferrari specifying 98-octane petrol for that figure. This makes the F8’s published engine output directly comparable to the 296’s 663 cv combustion-engine figure in a way that the 296’s 830 cv system total is not. Even then, power ratings alone do not show how either car performs in every speed range or driving condition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The electric motor’s stated contribution is an important part of the 296’s specification, but it does not replace the need to distinguish component ratings from the full system figure. Ferrari identifies a 7.45 kWh high-voltage battery and states the condition attached to the 830 cv rating. Those details establish that the car is a plug-in hybrid and that the maximum system output is mode-qualified. They do not, by themselves, answer questions about how far it can travel electrically, how long charging takes, or what power is available in every setting.

For a concise comparison, it is fair to say that the F8 has more quoted power from its combustion engine alone, while the 296 has the greater quoted output for the complete hybrid system. It is not fair to remove the words “V6” or “hybrid system” from the comparison and treat those two figures as equivalent measures. This distinction is particularly useful when reading specifications that place a hybrid-system number beside a conventional engine’s maximum power.

What do the acceleration and top-speed figures say?

Ferrari gives both cars a 0–100 km/h time of 2.9 seconds. On the manufacturer’s published figures, they are tied for this measure; the data do not support saying that one has a lower quoted time to 100 km/h.

For 0–200 km/h, Ferrari lists 7.3 seconds for the 296 GTB and 7.8 seconds for the F8 Tributo. That gives the 296 the quicker stated time over the longer acceleration interval. These are manufacturer specifications, not independently measured comparative results. The figures alone do not establish how consistently either car would achieve them in real-world use, or how the cars compare in a particular road or track test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The difference between the two published 0–200 km/h figures is half a second. It is a straightforward subtraction of Ferrari’s listed times, not a claim based on independent testing. The comparison also does not tell us how the cars perform from a different starting speed, under different conditions, or over a particular circuit. It describes only the acceleration interval and figures Ferrari publishes.

The top-speed wording points the other way. Ferrari lists the 296 GTB at over 330 km/h and the F8 Tributo at 340 km/h. “Over 330 km/h” is an open-ended specification, not an exact 330 km/h ceiling, so it should not be used to calculate a precise speed difference from the F8. The defensible reading is that Ferrari quotes 340 km/h for the F8 and gives a lower-bound-style figure for the 296.

That wording matters because “over 330” does not state an exact maximum for the 296. It could be tempting to call the F8 precisely 10 km/h faster by subtracting 330 from 340, but that would treat the 296’s stated lower bound as an exact figure. Ferrari’s specifications support saying that the F8 has a quoted top speed of 340 km/h and the 296 is quoted at over 330 km/h; they do not provide the exact pair of values needed for a precise gap.

These measures give different answers to the broad question of which is faster. The 296 has the quicker published 0–200 km/h time, while the F8 has the higher explicit top-speed number. Their quoted 0–100 km/h times are equal. A single winner would depend on which performance measure matters, and these manufacturer figures should not be confused with a head-to-head instrumented test.

How should you read the torque and weight figures?

Ferrari lists maximum torque of 740 Nm at 6,250 rpm for the 296 GTB and 770 Nm at 3,250 rpm for the F8 Tributo. The F8’s stated maximum is higher and occurs at a lower engine speed, but those two numbers do not, on their own, describe the full torque curve or the experience of accelerating through every gear and speed range. For the 296 in particular, the table’s torque figure should be read in the context of its hybrid powertrain rather than treated as a complete description of how the engine and electric motor deliver power together.

The rpm figures are part of the comparison, not decoration. The 296’s listed maximum torque is reached at 6,250 rpm, while the F8’s is listed at 3,250 rpm. That tells the reader where Ferrari states each maximum occurs, but it does not show the full shape of either car’s torque delivery. Nor does it establish how either car responds at a specific road speed or in a particular gear. Those judgments require more information than the peak torque figure and its engine speed.

Torque and power are related measures, but a peak number cannot stand in for every aspect of performance. The F8’s 770 Nm is greater than the 296’s listed 740 Nm; the 296’s hybrid system nevertheless has the higher combined power rating. That is not a contradiction: the table is reporting different characteristics, and the 296’s system includes an electric motor. It would be an overreach to infer a complete driving impression from either peak torque or peak power alone.

The stated dry weights also need a configuration caveat. Ferrari lists 1,470 kg for the 296 GTB with optional lightweight content and 1,330 kg for the F8 Tributo with lightweight options. Since the wording differs and both figures depend on optional equipment, subtracting one from the other does not produce a guaranteed like-for-like weight difference between two identically equipped cars.

The listed values differ by 140 kg, but that arithmetic should not be presented as a definitive real-world weight penalty for the 296. The 296 figure is explicitly tied to optional lightweight content, while the F8 figure is described as applying with lightweight options. The specifications do not establish that the two cars have been measured using identical equipment or the same configuration rules. In a careful comparison, quote Ferrari’s figures and preserve the qualifications rather than turning the difference into a universal claim.

Likewise, dry weight is not a promise of the weight of every car as delivered or driven. Options and equipment matter, and the figures in this comparison are not a substitute for a scale measurement of specific examples. The available specifications let readers compare Ferrari’s stated configurations, but not settle exactly how two particular cars would compare once equipped.

Which car is faster on paper?

There is no single answer unless “faster” is defined. The 296 has the higher quoted full-system power and the quicker Ferrari-listed 0–200 km/h time. The F8 has the higher listed combustion-engine output than the 296’s V6 alone, a higher quoted maximum torque, and a stated top speed of 340 km/h compared with the 296’s “over 330 km/h.” Both have the same published 0–100 km/h time.

These distinctions are more useful than picking a winner from one specification. If the comparison is about the combined powertrain rating and Ferrari’s quoted acceleration to 200 km/h, the published figures favor the 296. If it is about engine-only output or the manufacturer’s stated top-speed figure, the listed figures favor the F8. None of those comparisons is a substitute for a matched independent test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For readers asking “Is the Ferrari 296 faster than the F8?”, the most accurate short response is that the answer changes with the measure. Ferrari’s claimed 0–100 km/h time is the same for both. The 296 is quicker in the published 0–200 km/h figure, while the F8’s stated top speed is 340 km/h and the 296’s is given as over 330 km/h. The specifications do not justify extending one of those results into a claim that the 296 is faster in every situation.

The model years provide useful context without changing the comparison. Ferrari announced the 296 GTB on 24 June 2021, describing its 663 cv V6 and 167 cv electric motor; the F8 Tributo was revealed at the Geneva Motor Show on 5 March 2019, with Ferrari describing its 720-horsepower output. These dates identify the launch announcements, not a direct test between the cars. A launch claim and a technical-sheet figure remain manufacturer information, regardless of how precisely the numbers are stated.

What the specifications cannot settle

Ferrari’s sheets establish the listed architecture, outputs, torque, acceleration, top speed and weight qualifications. They do not establish which car sounds better, feels more engaging, handles better, rides more comfortably, costs less to maintain, or is quicker in independent testing. Those judgments require comparable testing, relevant current market or ownership-cost information, or direct experience; they should not be inferred from engine layout or headline figures alone.

For example, the fact that one car has a V8 and the other a hybrid V6 does not by itself prove which one has the preferred sound. Similarly, the acceleration figures do not reveal how either car feels through a corner, how it rides over a particular surface, or which is more satisfying to drive. Those are reasonable questions for a buyer or enthusiast, but answering them requires evidence beyond Ferrari’s listed specifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nor do the figures here establish current regional prices, used-market values, or the cost and availability of maintaining either model. Anyone making a purchase decision should verify current, location-specific information rather than assume that the specification comparison answers those questions. Costs can depend on location, vehicle condition, and the specific ownership or service information being considered; no comparative maintenance estimate is established by the figures above.

The same caution applies to claims about independent performance. Ferrari’s quoted acceleration and top-speed numbers tell readers what the manufacturer lists, but there is no verified independent back-to-back result here. A meaningful real-world comparison would need a matched test with its conditions and measurement method made clear. Until then, the safe distinction is between Ferrari’s published specifications and measured comparative performance.

Official parts-reference catalogues

Owners looking for parts-reference information can use the model-specific catalogue listing as an official starting point. It should not be mistaken for proof that any particular component is in stock, that the catalogue is free to access, or that a part is available through a particular retailer. Does the 296 GTB’s V6 produce 830 cv?

No. Ferrari lists 663 cv for the 296’s V6 combustion engine and 830 cv for the complete hybrid system. Ferrari’s technical sheet specifies eManettino in Qualify mode for the 830 cv system output.

Which car has more engine-only power?

Ferrari lists the F8 Tributo’s V8 at 720 cv and the 296 GTB’s V6 at 663 cv. The 296’s separate 830 cv rating is for its hybrid system, so it is not an engine-only figure.

What battery does the Ferrari 296 GTB have?

Ferrari’s 296 GTB technical sheet lists a 7.45 kWh high-voltage battery. That figure alone does not establish electric-only range or charging time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which car has the higher top speed?

Ferrari lists the F8 Tributo at 340 km/h and the 296 GTB at over 330 km/h. Since the 296’s figure is not an exact maximum, the published wording does not support calculating a precise speed difference.

Is the F8 Tributo lighter than the 296 GTB?

Ferrari lists 1,330 kg for the F8 with lightweight options and 1,470 kg for the 296 with optional lightweight content. The configuration wording differs, so those figures should not be treated as a guaranteed apples-to-apples comparison of identically equipped cars.

Which car is cheaper to maintain or more enjoyable to drive?

The listed specifications do not establish maintenance costs, sound preference, comfort, handling, or driving enjoyment. Those questions need current ownership information, comparable testing, or firsthand experience.

The Bottom Line

The Ferrari 296 GTB combines a 663 cv V6 with an electric motor for a manufacturer-rated 830 cv hybrid system; the F8 Tributo’s turbocharged V8 is rated at 720 cv. Ferrari quotes both at 2.9 seconds to 100 km/h, gives the 296 the quicker 0–200 km/h time, and lists the F8 at 340 km/h top speed. The figures favor different cars depending on the measure, and they remain manufacturer specifications rather than independent back-to-back test results.
