Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder vs. Ferrari 250 GT SWB: What’s the Difference?

The California Spider is an open-bodied Ferrari, while SWB describes its shorter-wheelbase platform. Ferrari made both LWB and SWB California Spiders; the 250 GT SWB Berlinetta is the closed coupe.

The key difference is that “California Spyder” identifies an open-bodied Ferrari, while “SWB” means short wheelbase. They are not mutually exclusive: Ferrari made both long-wheelbase (LWB) and short-wheelbase California Spiders. When people say “250 GT SWB,” they often mean the closed Berlinetta, the coupe whose short-wheelbase platform was also used for the later California Spider.

So the comparison depends on what you mean: an open California Spider versus a closed 250 GT SWB Berlinetta, or the LWB and SWB generations of the open California itself. The distinctions are body style, chassis, dimensions, brakes, engine specification and production history—not simply “California” versus “SWB.”

First, untangle the names

Ferrari’s official history uses the spelling “Spider.” The title’s “Spyder” is a familiar alternative spelling, but the underlying model is the Ferrari 250 GT California Spider. “California” refers to the open-bodied model; “LWB” and “SWB” distinguish its long- and short-wheelbase forms. “Berlinetta,” by contrast, refers to a closed-bodied car.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters because a California Spider can be an SWB car. Ferrari introduced the California on a long-wheelbase chassis, then made a shorter-wheelbase version. The later California Spider SWB was based on the short-wheelbase 250 GT Berlinetta chassis. Thus “California Spider SWB” names an open California on the SWB platform, while “250 GT SWB Berlinetta” generally describes the closed coupe.

For a useful comparison, it helps to keep three cars in view: the earlier open California Spider LWB; the later open California Spider SWB; and the closed 250 GT SWB Berlinetta. The first two show how the California evolved. Comparing the second and third shows how two different body styles relate to the same short-wheelbase platform.

How the California moved from LWB to SWB

Ferrari says the California Spider originated in 1957 on a long-wheelbase chassis. LWB production ran from 1958 through 1960. The SWB California followed from 1960 to 1963, after the introduction of the short-wheelbase platform. The two California versions therefore overlap in 1960; the change was a transition between configurations, not a clean calendar-year boundary.

The timeline also explains why descriptions can sound as if the California and SWB are separate model families. The first California Spiders were LWB, while the later ones adopted the SWB platform. Meanwhile, “250 GT SWB” can refer to the Berlinetta, which is the closed car associated with that platform. The phrase alone does not tell you whether the speaker means body style or wheelbase.

Gooding & Company’s 2016 account of a 1961 California Spider describes the SWB car as using the new short-wheelbase 250 GT Berlinetta chassis. This is the important relationship: the California SWB is an open-bodied California built on the SWB chassis, not simply another name for the closed Berlinetta.

What changed on the California Spider SWB?

Ferrari reports that the SWB California was 20 cm shorter in overall length than the LWB California and sat 3 cm lower. Those figures compare the two open California versions; they are not a complete dimensional comparison with the closed Berlinetta. Ferrari does not give a full Berlinetta dimension set in the source cited here, so the California measurements should not be transferred to the coupe.

The shorter overall length and lower ride height are useful ways to understand the change, but “short wheelbase” itself describes the distance between the axles—not the car’s total length. The two measurements answer different questions. Ferrari’s figures establish that the SWB California was both shorter overall and lower than its LWB predecessor; they do not establish every dimensional difference between the California and Berlinetta.

Gooding describes the SWB California as having an updated chassis and suspension, along with standard Dunlop disc brakes on all four wheels. These are specific features reported for the California SWB. The cited material does not provide a corresponding full specification list for the LWB California or the closed Berlinetta, so it would be misleading to turn this into a complete three-way brake or chassis comparison.

Engine figures: compare the two California versions carefully

Ferrari lists a 3,000 cc V12 for both California versions, with 240 hp for the LWB and 280 hp for the SWB. Gooding notes an outside-plug engine revision for the SWB. These are Ferrari’s published figures for the LWB and SWB California, not universal specifications for every related 250 GT Berlinetta or every surviving example.

The figures establish a higher stated output for the SWB California in Ferrari’s history account, but they do not by themselves identify a particular car. They also should not be used as a shortcut for deciding whether an SWB is a California Spider or a Berlinetta: body style and engine output are separate parts of the identification. The cited sources do not establish a single engine specification that can be applied to every Berlinetta configuration.

How many California Spiders were built?

Ferrari gives 106 examples for the California overall. Gooding & Company states that 56 SWB California Spiders were built between 1960 and 1963. Subtracting the SWB figure from Ferrari’s overall total yields an implied 50 LWB cars. That 50 is arithmetic based on the two published figures, not a separately stated Ferrari production count.

The distinction between a reported total and a derived figure is worth preserving. The sources establish the overall California count and Gooding’s SWB count; they do not present Ferrari’s own standalone LWB total in the cited material. Accordingly, the derived number is a useful estimate from those figures, not a separately verified factory breakdown.

Which comparison should you use?

If you mean open car versus closed car

Compare the California Spider SWB with the 250 GT SWB Berlinetta. The California is the open-bodied car; the Berlinetta is closed. Their connection is the SWB platform, not identical bodywork or interchangeable specifications. The cited sources do not establish a full set of side-by-side Berlinetta dimensions, engine figures, production totals or equipment, so a precise comparison on those points requires evidence beyond the figures presented here.

If you mean the two California generations

Compare the California Spider LWB with the California Spider SWB. This is where Ferrari’s 20 cm overall-length difference, 3 cm ride-height reduction, and 240 hp versus 280 hp figures apply. The SWB also brought an updated chassis and suspension and standard four-wheel Dunlop discs, according to Gooding.

If a listing or conversation only says “250 GT SWB”

Ask whether it means the closed Berlinetta or the open California Spider SWB. The abbreviation identifies the short-wheelbase configuration, but does not alone settle the body style. For a vehicle description, use the complete model name where possible and keep body type, wheelbase generation, and specific equipment as separate claims.

How to read the figures without mixing the cars up

A reliable comparison starts by naming both the body and the wheelbase version. “California Spider” alone identifies the open model family but does not tell you whether a car is LWB or SWB. “SWB” alone indicates the shorter-wheelbase configuration but does not establish whether the car is an open California or a closed Berlinetta. The most informative descriptions combine the terms, such as “California Spider SWB” or “250 GT SWB Berlinetta.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 20 cm and 3 cm figures are easy to misread if the comparison is not kept in scope. Ferrari gives the 20 cm shorter overall length and 3 cm lower ride height for the SWB California relative to the LWB California. They are not stated as differences between the California Spider SWB and Berlinetta. Likewise, the 240 hp and 280 hp figures are specifically Ferrari’s LWB and SWB California outputs; Gooding’s reference to an outside-plug engine revision adds useful context, but does not justify treating every SWB-related 250 GT as a 280 hp car.

Production dates need the same care. Ferrari places LWB California production in 1958–1960 and SWB California production in 1960–1963. Because the stated spans overlap, a 1960 date by itself does not identify one configuration. Gooding’s 56-car count applies to SWB California Spiders built from 1960 through 1963; it is not a count of all 250 GT SWB Berlinettas. For a specific car, these broad model facts are a framework for understanding a description, not a substitute for confirming that car’s identity and specification.

What the short-wheelbase connection does—and does not—mean

The relationship between the two SWB cars is more precise than saying they are the same car. Gooding describes the California Spider SWB as using the new short-wheelbase 250 GT Berlinetta chassis. That explains why the open California and closed Berlinetta share a platform connection. It does not make their body styles interchangeable, and it does not prove that every technical detail or published specification is identical between them.

In particular, the available figures support a direct comparison between the two California versions, not a full technical contest between the California SWB and Berlinetta. There is no full Berlinetta dimension set, corresponding engine-output figure, production count or equipment list established here. Avoid filling those gaps by transferring the California’s measurements, horsepower or production numbers to the coupe. A sound comparison is sometimes about stating clearly what can be compared, and where the evidence stops.

The same distinction helps with shorthand in conversation. A person may use “SWB” when talking about the closed Berlinetta because that is the common referent of “250 GT SWB,” while another may be discussing the California Spider SWB. Neither phrase is inherently wrong, but omitting the full model name can blur the difference between an open body and a closed one. If body style matters to the question, spell it out.

Collecting, models and value questions

For an enthusiast looking for a display collectible rather than a full-size car, the CMC Modelcars catalog lists a “Ferrari 250 California SWB” model car. That establishes that a scale-model product category exists; it does not confirm current stock, scale, the accuracy of a particular listing, or whether a retailer currently offers it. Check those details with the seller rather than assuming a product title guarantees an exact replica or a particular configuration.

No specific retail price is established here, and there is no verified current comparison of full-size LWB California, SWB California and Berlinetta market values. The production counts and model specifications are not enough to calculate a present-day price or establish an investment ranking. Treat claims about current values, auction performance or relative investment potential as separate questions requiring current, documented market evidence.

Gooding’s 2016 press release also includes a statement from its president and founder, David Gooding: “We are thrilled to present this California Spider to our clients.” It is a brief expression of the auction company’s enthusiasm, not a technical specification or evidence of market value. The useful technical details in that account are its description of the SWB chassis, updated suspension, four-wheel Dunlop disc brakes, outside-plug engine revision and its stated production count.

What the sources establish—and what they do not

Ferrari’s official history is the source for the California’s chronology, dimensions, engine displacement and horsepower figures, and overall production count. Its page is undated; it was accessed on October 12, 2026. Gooding & Company’s press release, dated February 12, 2016, supplies the SWB count and describes the updated chassis, suspension, four-wheel Dunlop discs and outside-plug engine revision.

Those accounts support the core identification and comparison, but not a current market-value ranking, an investment conclusion, or a complete specification sheet for every SWB Berlinetta. They also do not establish that every existing car retains the same specification as when built. The most reliable reading is therefore to treat the published horsepower values as Ferrari’s figures for the California variants and Gooding’s production count as its stated SWB figure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Ferrari 250 GT California Spider the same as the 250 GT SWB?

No. California Spider names an open-bodied model, while SWB means short wheelbase. Ferrari made an SWB California Spider, but “250 GT SWB” often refers to the closed Berlinetta. Use the complete name to distinguish body style from chassis configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Was the California Spider available in both LWB and SWB versions?

Yes. Ferrari says the California originated on a long-wheelbase chassis, with LWB production from 1958 to 1960 and SWB production from 1960 to 1963. The stated production periods overlap in 1960.

How much shorter and lower was the SWB California?

Ferrari reports that the SWB California was 20 cm shorter overall and sat 3 cm lower than the LWB California. Those measurements compare the two California versions, not the California with the Berlinetta.

How much power did the LWB and SWB California have?

Ferrari lists a 3,000 cc V12 at 240 hp for the LWB California and 280 hp for the SWB California. Gooding notes an outside-plug engine revision for the SWB. These figures should not be applied automatically to every Berlinetta or surviving car.

How many SWB California Spiders were built?

Gooding & Company states that 56 were built from 1960 to 1963. Ferrari gives 106 California examples overall; subtracting the Gooding figure implies 50 LWB cars, but that is a derived calculation, not a separately stated Ferrari count.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is there a current price comparison or a confirmed scale-model listing?

No current full-size market-value comparison or product price is established here. The CMC Modelcars catalog lists a Ferrari 250 California SWB model car, but current availability, scale and listing accuracy should be checked with the retailer.

The Bottom Line

“California Spider” tells you the car is open; “SWB” tells you it uses the short-wheelbase configuration. Ferrari built California Spiders in both LWB and SWB forms, and the SWB California was based on the 250 GT SWB Berlinetta chassis. For the California-to-California comparison, Ferrari reports a 20 cm reduction in overall length, a 3 cm lower ride height, and output rising from 240 hp to 280 hp. For an open-versus-closed comparison, distinguish the California Spider SWB from the Berlinetta rather than treating the names as interchangeable.
