In March 2025, the FBI said it was investigating attacks on Tesla vehicles, dealerships, storage lots and charging stations in at least nine states. FBI Director Kash Patel called the attacks “domestic terrorism,” a characterization—not a court finding about every incident or suspect.
What happened to Tesla cars and facilities?
In a public alert issued March 21, 2025, the FBI said incidents targeting Tesla property had occurred in at least nine states since January. The reported conduct included arson, gunfire and vandalism involving vehicles and Tesla-related business or charging locations. The alert described a range of incidents; it did not say that every event involved arson. Read the FBI alert.
Why did the FBI director call it “domestic terrorism”?
Patel used the phrase while announcing coordinated investigative steps. Ars Technica quoted him saying, “This is domestic terrorism. Those responsible will be pursued, caught, and brought to justice.” The FBI’s general definition, as quoted in that report, describes violent criminal acts intended to further ideological goals based on domestic influences. Read the contemporaneous report.
The phrase reflects the director’s characterization of the incidents. It does not establish that every event met a legal definition, that a particular person committed an offense, or that a court found anyone guilty.

What pattern did the FBI report?
The FBI said that known incidents appeared to have been carried out by lone offenders and had occurred at night. It also noted graffiti expressing grievances against people the perpetrators perceived as racists, fascists or political opponents. These were the bureau’s qualified observations in its March 21 alert, not proof of a shared motive in every incident.
What is known about the Las Vegas case?
In a March 27, 2025 announcement, the Department of Justice said Paul Hyon Kim had been charged by criminal complaint in connection with a March 18 attack on a Tesla collision business in Las Vegas. The complaint alleged that five vehicles were damaged or destroyed using Molotov cocktails and a firearm. Read the DOJ announcement.

What did the FBI tell the public to do?
The bureau urged people to stay alert near Tesla-related locations. For an emergency, it advised calling 911 or local law enforcement. To report a threat to the FBI, it listed local FBI field offices, 1-800-CALL-FBI and tips.fbi.gov.

In written testimony to the U.S. House Committee on Appropriations dated May 7, 2025, Patel said seven individuals had been arrested for actions connected to the described pattern. That is the number he stated on that date, not a current total or a statement of how any case ended. Read Patel’s written testimony.
