What happened on Indian Ocean Drive
The crash was reported near Seabird Road in Breton Bay at about 7:45am, or just before 8am, on Thursday, 8 October. Reports say a grey BMW sedan left the road and struck trees. The West Australian reported that the car flipped into trees; 7NEWS reported that it struck a tree. The available accounts do not establish the precise sequence of events.
What is known about the people involved
The West Australian reported that a 22-year-old front-seat passenger died. It said three other occupants survived: two 21-year-old men, including the driver, and a younger female passenger. The two men were taken to Royal Perth Hospital and the younger passenger to Perth Children’s Hospital; their injuries were reported as not life-threatening.
7NEWS described the survivors as male and female passengers in their 20s, said the two men were stable at Royal Perth Hospital, and described the female survivor as stable. The reports differ on the surviving woman’s age and status, so those details cannot be reconciled from the accounts available.

Has the road reopened?
At the time of 7NEWS’s report, both directions of Indian Ocean Drive between K.W Road and Gingin Brook Road had been closed and had since reopened. That is a report-time update, not a guarantee of current conditions. Check current traffic information before travelling.
What caused the crash?
The cause has not been reported. Major Crash investigators are investigating, and the available reporting does not establish why the car left the road. There are no reported findings that would support conclusions about speed, fatigue, impairment, distraction or road conditions.

How to provide information
Major Crash investigators appealed for witnesses, including people who saw the BMW in Jurien Bay or Lancelin before the crash. The West Australian also reported an appeal for information and dashcam footage. A separate historical analysis in the WA Government’s Driving Change: Road Safety Strategy for Western Australia 2020–2030 examined a 58 km section of Indian Ocean Drive and 146 crashes recorded from January 2012 to August 2017. The strategy counted three fatal crashes, 23 hospitalisations and 28 medical treatments in that review period. It described measures including shoulder sealing, audible edge and centre lines, a speed-limit reduction on a section, signs, overtaking lanes, barriers between Seabird and Lancelin, and road widening. The strategy reported that fatal and serious crashes fell from 5 to 2.2 per year after the changes.
