Fastest RWD Electric Cars of the 2024 Model Year: What the Data Confirms

Official sources confirm several 2024 RWD EV candidates, but not ten comparable acceleration times. Here’s what the available U.S. and UK data actually establishes.

There isn’t enough comparable, verified data to rank ten rear-wheel-drive electric cars by speed for the 2024 model year. Official sources confirm several U.S. 2024 RWD EVs and provide range or power figures, but they do not publish a consistent set of acceleration times for ten cars. The confirmed candidates include the Hyundai IONIQ 6, Kia EV6 and Tesla Model 3; the available evidence does not establish which is fastest.

Why a trustworthy top 10 is not available

“Fastest” needs a consistent yardstick. A fair ranking would have to use one market, the same model year, confirmed RWD configurations, and a common acceleration measure—such as manufacturer-published 0–60 mph times. The available official sources mix U.S. 2024 model-year specifications, a current Tesla page, and UK-market Hyundai figures. They do not establish ten comparable acceleration times.

That distinction matters: a range figure or motor output can identify a configuration, but it cannot supply a verified acceleration result. Nor can a 0–62 mph time be silently presented as a 0–60 mph time.

2024 U.S. RWD EVs confirmed in the federal guide

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center guide lists these 2024 rear-wheel-drive entries. Its figures help identify candidates and compare EPA range, but the guide does not rank them by acceleration.

2024 model and configuration EPA range in the guide Acceleration ranking evidence
Hyundai IONIQ 6 Long Range RWD 305–361 miles No acceleration time stated in the guide
Kia EV6 Long Range RWD 310 miles No acceleration time stated in the guide
Tesla Model 3 RWD 272–363 miles No acceleration time stated in the guide

What the available Hyundai figures do—and do not—show

U.S. 2024 IONIQ 6 configurations

Hyundai USA lists RWD as standard for the relevant configurations. Its specifications show RWD outputs of 111 kW (149 hp) or 168 kW (225 hp), battery capacities of 53.0 kWh or 77.4 kWh, and EPA range entries from 240 to 361 miles, depending on configuration. Those specifications do not establish a 0–60 mph time. Hyundai USA’s IONIQ 6 specifications.

UK 0–62 mph result

Hyundai Motor UK lists the 77.4-kWh, single-motor RWD IONIQ 6 with 229 PS (168 kW), 338 miles of WLTP range, a 7.4-second 0–62 mph time and a 115 mph top speed. This is a UK-market specification; its WLTP range and 0–62 mph result are not directly interchangeable with U.S. EPA range and 0–60 mph claims. Hyundai UK IONIQ 6 specifications.

Do not use the AWD time as an RWD result

Hyundai’s launch-era technical release reports 5.1 seconds from 0–100 km/h for the top dual-motor AWD IONIQ 6, rated at 239 kW and 605 Nm. That is an AWD figure, not evidence for the speed of an RWD IONIQ 6. Hyundai’s technical release.

Why two tempting acceleration claims cannot fill the ranking

BMW i4

BMW USA’s technical content includes rear-wheel-drive wording and a 5.5-second 0–60 mph result, but the exact model labeling and configuration are not sufficiently established as a 2024 RWD electric i4. It should not be counted as a verified entry on that basis alone. BMW USA i4 technical data.

Tesla Model 3

Tesla’s current Model 3 page lists 4.9 seconds from 0–60 mph for an RWD configuration and 4.2 seconds for a separate Premium configuration. The page is current rather than a verified 2024 model-year source, so those times cannot safely be assigned to a 2024 ranking. Tesla Model 3.

How to compare 2024 RWD EV performance fairly

Before ordering cars from quickest to slowest, check each candidate against the same rules:

  • Market and model year: Use one country’s 2024 model-year lineup, rather than combining market-specific trims.
  • Drivetrain: Confirm that the exact version is rear-wheel drive; exclude AWD times, even when they belong to the same model.
  • Acceleration metric: Compare 0–60 mph with 0–60 mph, or 0–62 mph with 0–62 mph. Identify manufacturer claims versus independent tests rather than treating them as equivalent.
  • Configuration: Record trim, battery, motor setup and any wheel specification attached to the result.
  • Everyday context: Put acceleration beside market-specific range and charging information. The AFDC guide includes range and charging data for listed vehicles, but neither substitutes for a verified acceleration time.

Charging context for EV shoppers

Performance is only one part of a useful EV comparison. The AFDC guide reports charging information alongside vehicle data, which can help readers consider home Level 2 and DC fast charging as part of ownership. For any charging equipment, check connector type, power, installation requirements and the vehicle’s compatibility before buying. Hyundai’s launch release also describes IONIQ 6 vehicle-to-load functionality and an available adaptor; this is a separate feature from charging speed.
