There is no defensible single ranking of the fastest production cars in the USA from these figures alone: they measure different things and come from different test conditions. For maximum speed, Chevrolet reports 233 mph for the Corvette ZR1; SSC reports a 282.9-mph average for the Tuatara; and Bugatti reports a 304.773-mph milestone for the Chiron Super Sport 300+. Those are useful reference points, not a like-for-like ranking of cars currently sold in the United States.
What “fastest” means
A car’s maximum speed, a two-way average, its 0–60 mph time, quarter-mile time, and lap time are separate performance measures. They cannot be combined into one leaderboard without defining the metric and comparing equivalent test methods.
- Top speed: the maximum speed recorded in a run; the result depends on the test, conditions, and configuration.
- Two-way average: an average across runs in opposite directions, reported as such by the source. It is not automatically comparable to a single-run maximum.
- Acceleration and quarter-mile: measures of how quickly a car launches and covers a set distance, not how fast it can ultimately travel.
Documented top-speed reference points
| Car and model year | Reported speed | Context and attribution |
|---|---|---|
| Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, 2025 | 233 mph | Chevrolet says the car reached this speed at a track in Germany. Chevrolet characterized it as the highest speed achieved by an American auto manufacturer and said it was unmatched at the time by a production car priced below $1 million. This is the automaker’s claim, not an independent market-wide ranking. Chevrolet, 2024. |
| Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, 2026 | 233 mph | Chevrolet lists this track top speed with the available ZTK Performance Package. Chevrolet, 2026 model-year specifications. |
| SSC Tuatara | 282.9 mph average | SSC says the car recorded this average at Kennedy Space Center in Florida on January 17, 2021. SSC identifies Racelogic USA as providing technical assistance with measurement and validation. This is SSC’s reported result on its records page. SSC North America. |
| Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ | 304.773 mph (490.484 km/h) | Bugatti reports that the car reached this speed in August 2019 and describes it as a production-series record. The figure is Bugatti’s reported milestone; it is not presented here as equivalent to SSC’s two-way average. Bugatti, company history. |
These cars and figures do not establish a complete current ranking of production cars orderable or officially sold in the United States. The Tuatara and Chiron figures are historical manufacturer-reported results, while Chevrolet’s figures are tied to specified Corvette model years. Treat them as separate reference points rather than a current U.S.-market top-speed list.
What Chevrolet’s ZR1X acceleration figures do—and do not—show
Chevrolet says its 2026 Corvette ZR1X ran 0–60 mph in 1.68 seconds and covered the quarter-mile in 8.675 seconds at 159 mph. Chevrolet specifies a prepped surface, pump gas, and standard-equipment tires for these results. They describe acceleration performance; they do not establish the ZR1X’s maximum speed. Chevrolet calls it “the quickest American production car available,” a claim made in the context of those acceleration and quarter-mile results. Chevrolet, January 13, 2026.

How to judge a production-car speed claim
Before comparing two headline numbers, check whether they answer the same question. A rigorous comparison should identify the vehicle and model year, test date and location, whether the speed was a single run or a two-way average, and who measured or validated it. It should also clarify production status and U.S. availability for that model year, plus relevant equipment such as packages, tires, and fuel when those details are given.
For example, Chevrolet’s 233-mph ZR1 figure is a track result, and the 2026 specification ties it to the available ZTK Performance Package. SSC describes its Tuatara figure as an average from a dated run and identifies measurement assistance. Bugatti’s 2019 figure is a company-reported milestone. Those differences matter: the numbers are informative, but the available claims do not support treating them as results from a shared test protocol.
