The quickest published 0–60 mph figure in this 2022 shortlist belongs to the Rimac Nevera: 1.85 seconds on a prepared drag strip, according to Car and Driver. For a luxury sedan with an instrumented result, Car and Driver recorded 2.1 seconds for the Tesla Model S Plaid. These figures are not a standardized head-to-head ranking: the cars were tested under different conditions, and some numbers are manufacturer claims or projections rather than independent tests.
This is a historical snapshot of notable 2022-era claims and tests, not proof that every car was broadly customer-available throughout 2022. The Lucid Air Sapphire, for example, was introduced in August with a projected sub-two-second time; that announcement did not establish customer deliveries that year. The Nevera is a limited-production hypercar, so it belongs in a different availability and vehicle-class comparison from the luxury sedans.
Quickest published 0–60 mph times in the 2022 shortlist
The table separates independent instrumented results from automaker-reported figures and projections. Treat the times as evidence of what each source reported for a particular trim—not as results from one shared test protocol.
| EV and trim | Published 0–60 mph time | Evidence and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Rimac Nevera | 1.85 seconds | Car and Driver reported the time from a prepared drag strip. The Nevera is a limited-production hypercar, not a high-volume sedan. Car and Driver |
| Tesla Model S Plaid | 2.1 seconds | Car and Driver instrumented its 2022-model-year, 1,020-hp Plaid. This result is for the Plaid trim, not every Model S. Car and Driver 2022 test |
| Porsche Taycan (tested version) | 2.4 seconds | Car and Driver reported a 0–60 mph result for the version it tested; the cited figure should not be assigned to every Taycan trim. Car and Driver |
| Lucid Air Dream Edition Performance | 2.42 seconds | Lucid reported this result from its own testing with the 21-inch wheel and tire package. It is not an independently measured 0–60 figure in the cited evidence. Lucid Group |
| Lucid Air Sapphire | Less than 2 seconds, projected | Lucid announced this target at the Sapphire’s August 2022 introduction. It was a projection, not an independent 2022 test result. Lucid Group |
Which EV had the quickest 0–60 in 2022?
Among the figures above, the Nevera’s 1.85 seconds is the lowest reported time. Car and Driver tied that result to a prepared drag strip, so it should not be read as a controlled comparison against the Plaid, Taycan, or Lucid sedan results. The Nevera is also a rare hypercar rather than a practical proxy for what most buyers could shop for in 2022.

If the comparison is limited to a tested luxury sedan result in this shortlist, the Model S Plaid’s 2.1 seconds is the quickest cited independent instrumented 0–60 time. Car and Driver’s 2022 review identifies it as the 1,020-hp Plaid and reports 4.3 seconds to 100 mph and a 9.4-second quarter-mile as additional results. Those measurements describe that test and trim; they do not establish what every Model S will achieve.
Is the Tesla Model S Plaid quicker than the Porsche Taycan?
In the cited results, yes: Car and Driver recorded 2.1 seconds to 60 mph for the Model S Plaid and 2.4 seconds for a Taycan it tested. That comparison is limited to those tested versions and conditions. It does not mean every Plaid will beat every Taycan in every setting.

Porsche’s 2022 announcement about the Taycan Turbo S concerns a separate 2023-model-year car fitted with a performance kit and a 7-minute-33-second Nürburgring Nordschleife lap. A lap time measures a different kind of performance, not 0–60 acceleration, and should not be ranked alongside the figures in the table. Porsche announcement
What the Lucid Air figures do—and do not—show
Dream Edition Performance: a Lucid-reported result
Lucid reported 1,111 horsepower and a 2.42-second 0–60 mph time for the Air Dream Edition Performance, specifying the 21-inch wheel and tire package. The company’s result is useful as a manufacturer-published figure, but it is not an independent 0–60 test. Car and Driver separately reported a 10.1-second quarter-mile in its road test; that independent quarter-mile result does not change who reported the 0–60 time. Lucid Group Car and Driver

Sapphire: a 2022 projection, not a measured result
At the Air Sapphire’s introduction in August 2022, Lucid projected less than two seconds to 60 mph. The announcement establishes what the company projected at that time; it does not establish an independent test or customer availability across 2022. Later test results should not be backdated and presented as information available in 2022.
How to read these acceleration numbers
A 0–60 time is only directly comparable when the test method and conditions are sufficiently alike. The published evidence here does not provide one common protocol for all cars, so hundredths of a second should not imply precision that the comparison cannot support.

- Check the trim and model year. The Plaid figure is not a result for all Model S versions; the Taycan figure applies to the version Car and Driver tested; and the Lucid result names the Dream Edition Performance.
- Check who produced the number. Car and Driver instrumented the Plaid. Lucid reported its own Dream Edition Performance figure, while its Sapphire number was a projection.
- Check the surface and setup. The Nevera’s result is associated with a prepared drag strip. Lucid specifies a 21-inch wheel and tire package for its Dream Edition figure. Other conditions, including rollout convention, tires, charge state, and weather, are not established consistently across these results.
- Keep metrics separate. A quarter-mile time and a Nürburgring lap time answer different questions from a 0–60 mph time. Rimac’s independently verified 8.582-second quarter-mile in 2021 is a separate measurement from Car and Driver’s cited Nevera 0–60 result. Rimac
- Account for availability and vehicle class. A limited-production hypercar, an announced model with projected performance, and a luxury sedan should not be treated as equally obtainable choices just because their acceleration figures fit one table.
What counts as “on the market” in a 2022 comparison?
“On the market” can mean announced, in production, customer-deliverable, or broadly available. The cited Sapphire introduction confirms an August 2022 announcement, not broad availability or deliveries during the entire year. The Nevera’s inclusion likewise identifies an extreme-performance car, not a common sedan alternative. For a buyer-oriented sedan comparison, focus on the Plaid, tested Taycan version, and Dream Edition Performance while keeping each result’s source and trim attached.
