No published source we could rely on ranks ten four-door sports cars under $40,000 by top speed, so this article does not offer a numbered top-speed order. What the sources do support is a shortlist of sporty four-door cars with cited prices under $40,000, the exact figures each source gives, and a method for building a defensible top-speed ranking. The first decision is whether your $40,000 limit refers to a new-car price or a used-car price, because that choice determines which cars qualify.
Decide first: new-car price or used-car price
The two budgets produce different lists, so settle this before comparing any speeds.
- New cars: The figures below are manufacturer starting MSRPs or retailer-style displayed prices in CARFAX’s 2026 comparison. They are not negotiated transaction prices, and the cited pages do not state whether destination charges or option packages are included.
- Used cars: The price that matters is the asking or average price in the current market, which changes by region, mileage and condition. A used list can include vehicles that are not four-door sedans, so confirm the body style of any car you find.
New four-door sports sedans with cited prices under $40,000
Four current sports sedans appear in the sources with prices under $40,000. Model years differ across the sources, so treat the rows as separate snapshots rather than a single, same-date price comparison.

The Kia figure to avoid confusing with the GT price is the $26,990 starting MSRP Kia announced on April 12, 2024 for the 2025 K5 family. That number applies to the lineup’s entry price, not the GT trim, and it is not a top-speed or performance measure.

Used option: the 2020 Subaru WRX STI
iSeeCars’ used performance-car list includes the 2020 Subaru WRX STI with an average used price of $39,900 and a 0–60 mph time of 4.6 seconds, as published on its page accessed in October 2026. Those are the only figures the source gives for this car. The list is ordered by acceleration and average used price, not by top speed, so it cannot be used as a top-speed ranking. Used prices also vary by condition and mileage, so an average is a starting reference, not a guaranteed purchase price.
What a top-speed ranking would require
A ranking is only as reliable as its inputs. Before placing any car in order, make sure each entry meets these checks:

- Fix the price basis. Use one price type for the whole list, either new MSRP or current used asking price, and record the date of the source.
- Match the exact configuration. Record model year, trim, drivetrain and transmission. A 2025 Elantra N, for example, should not be compared with a 2026 car’s top speed unless the figure applies to that same configuration.
- Label the type of top-speed figure. A manufacturer figure, an independent measured test speed, and an electronically limited maximum are different things. A governed figure reflects a software or hardware limit, not the car’s ultimate capability, and a measured figure reflects one test under specific conditions. Mark any secondary estimate clearly.
- Do not infer speed from other numbers. Horsepower, 0–60 mph time and sport badging do not establish a maximum speed. Two cars with similar horsepower can have different limits.
- Report conflicts instead of picking the higher number. If two sources disagree, show both, with the configuration and test conditions for each.
None of the four new candidates above has a top-speed figure in the cited sources, so none can be placed in a verified order yet.
