Automakers have repeatedly taken familiar production cars and fitted them with competition-derived engines, drivetrain or chassis engineering, or track-focused parts. The best-documented cases come from BMW M and Mercedes-AMG, and they run from a 1971 luxury sedan that raced at Spa to a 2009 SUV. This list therefore covers eight documented cars rather than ten. The remaining candidates either could not be traced to primary manufacturer material or were better treated as background than as separate vehicles, so they are left out instead of padded in.
What counts as an “ordinary” car in this list
“Ordinary” is shorthand for a production car or platform that was on sale as a regular model. It does not mean an entry-level trim. Several of the cars below were upper-range sedans or coupes when their performance versions arrived. Each entry meets three tests:
- The donor was a production model or platform, not a one-off prototype.
- The manufacturer documents a specific change to the engine, drivetrain, chassis, brakes, or track-oriented parts.
- The result was a road-going car, even where a racing link also exists.
Mercedes-Benz and AMG
300 SEL 6.8 (1971): a heavy sedan at the 24 Hours of Spa
Mercedes-AMG’s history of the car says the 300 SEL 6.8 won its class and finished second overall at the 24 Hours of Spa in 1971. That result is notable because the car was a large, heavy luxury sedan competing against lighter machinery. The performance came from serious engine work and race preparation applied to a production sedan. It is one of the few entries here with a documented competition result rather than a homologation rationale.
E-Class coupe “The Hammer” (1986): a V8 in a familiar body
AMG says it fitted a 5.0-liter V8 into an E-Class coupe in 1986, and that the car became an important AMG icon, particularly in the United States. The example shows how a conventional Mercedes body could carry an engine far beyond what the donor was sold with. AMG’s account describes its status and reputation; it does not document a racing program for this car, so no motorsport connection is claimed here.

SLK 55 AMG Black Series (2006): a roadster pushed toward focus
Mercedes-Benz describes the road-focused SLK 55 AMG as using a 5.5-liter V8 rated at 355 hp in its Media Newsroom material, and says that SLK racing variants helped prompt the Black Series line. The Black Series is therefore a derivative of the SLK 55 AMG, adapted toward more focused performance. The 355 hp figure belongs to the SLK 55 AMG, not to a Black Series specification, and the source is a manufacturer newsroom page rather than an independent test.
BMW M
M3 E30 (introduced 1985, launched 1986): a touring-car road car
BMW describes the first M3 as a street version of a champion touring car. Its press history says the road car was conceived to meet Group A requirements, and a 5,000-car homologation requirement for that racing category shaped the program. The cited trim used a 2.3-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder rated at 195 hp. BMW reports 17,970 first-generation M3s built through the end of production in 1991, a total that includes variants and special editions. This is the clearest documented case in the list of a road car created largely because of a racing rule.

Later M3 development (by 1990): the engine gets stronger
BMW’s model history says the compact M3’s engine had reached 238 hp by 1990. That figure describes an evolved model in the same line, not the car’s original launch specification, so it should not be read as a correction to the 1986 numbers above. It shows the M3 line advancing through more powerful road-going versions within the same compact body.
M5 E28 (1987): a sedan with a hidden drivetrain
BMW’s history says the first M5 was handcrafted, used a 3.5-liter inline-six, and made 286 hp. BMW’s anniversary account calls the understated sedan a “wolf in sheep’s clothing,” with a high-performance drivetrain inside the recognizable 5 Series body. The same account describes attention to suspension and brakes alongside the engine, which is a reminder that a performance variant can involve more than a bigger motor.

M5 V10 (2005): a sedan with a specialized powertrain
BMW USA’s model history describes the M5 introduced in 2005 with a five-liter V10 rated at 507 hp. This is a later example of a familiar sedan platform receiving a powertrain that is clearly unlike the regular model. The 507 hp figure is BMW’s own rating for that model and is not an independent measurement.
X5 M (2009): a performance SUV in the M timeline
BMW’s official history places the X5 M within its M performance models. The cited material confirms that placement but does not give enough detail to compare its engineering with a standard X5, so treat it as an example of the M treatment spreading to an SUV body rather than as a detailed engineering case.

How the M3 name carried the idea forward
When BMW announced the fifth-generation M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe in 2013, its press release quoted Dr Friedrich Nitschke, then President of BMW M GmbH: “Today, 28 years later, the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupe are set to extend this tradition into a fifth generation and take the car’s unique combination of outstanding dynamics and unrestricted everyday usability to yet another new level.” That quote is a 2013 statement about that announcement, and it should be presented that way. The same release says the M3 and M4 were integrated into production alongside their donor models, which is a useful reminder that a high-performance derivative can remain tied to mass-production manufacturing rather than being built as a separate car.

Reading the figures and sources
- Most figures are manufacturer specifications, production totals, or rule requirements. None come from independent testing, so they should not be compared as if they were measured under the same conditions.
- Every figure applies to a specific car, year, and trim. The 286 hp of the E28 M5, the 238 hp of the later M3, and the 355 hp of the SLK 55 AMG cannot be ranked against one another.
- Only the E30 M3 has a documented homologation rationale. Do not assume a racing link for the other entries.
- The cited sources do not establish current production status for most of these cars, so this article does not claim which are still available new.
- Body styles vary across the list: sedans, a coupe, a roadster, and an SUV. Performance treatment is not limited to one body type.
Read as a group, the examples show two recurring routes. One starts with a racing requirement, as with the E30 M3. The other starts with a production car that already had strong bones, and then adds a specialized engine or focused chassis work, as with the E28 M5, the 2005 V10 M5, and the SLK Black Series.
