How Facebook and Instagram car scams work
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warned in September 2026 that scammers create fake dealership websites to collect payment for cars they never deliver. They may copy a legitimate dealer’s logo, vehicle listings, and photos, then add detailed buying steps or flexible return policies to look convincing. A polished listing or website is not proof that the seller is genuine. This dealership-impersonation scheme is documented by the FTC; it does not mean every case began with a Facebook or Instagram post. FTC consumer alert, September 2026.
In a separate, historical example, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) described auto fraud involving a below-market price, a seller claiming urgency because of relocation or military deployment, refusal to meet or allow an inspection, and a request to wire money to a third-party agent. The vehicle was not delivered. IC3 published this account in 2015 about complaints from 2014; it illustrates a documented pattern, not current Facebook- or Instagram-specific prevalence. Warning signs to take seriously
- The seller will not let you see the car or dealership. A refusal to arrange an in-person viewing—or, for a distant vehicle, an independent mobile inspection—is a reason to reconsider the purchase.
- The seller insists on upfront wire transfer only. The FTC advises walking away from a deal with this demand.
- The deal depends on urgency or a personal story. A seller pressing you to act quickly, especially alongside a bargain price and refusal to meet, matches the historical IC3 pattern.
- The listing uses familiar dealer details, photos, or reassuring terms as proof. Scammers can copy real dealerships’ branding, vehicle photos, listings, and sales language.
- The profile, ratings, or reviews are the main evidence offered. Treat these as clues to verify, not proof of ownership or legitimacy. A Meta Help Center search-result summary says Marketplace ratings do not verify that reviewers bought or used the item or service; the help page was login-gated when checked, so this platform detail is limited.
What to check before paying
- Find the dealership’s contact details independently. Search the dealer’s name with terms such as “scam,” “review,” or “complaint,” then locate the dealership’s contact information yourself rather than relying only on the listing or seller’s link. A genuine dealership can be impersonated, so positive reviews for the real business do not authenticate the person contacting you.
- Confirm the offer with the real dealership. Use the independently found contact details to ask whether the vehicle, seller, price, and terms are genuinely theirs. If the seller claims to represent a dealer, the dealership should be able to confirm that relationship.
- See the actual vehicle and dealership. Ask to inspect the car and visit the dealership in person. If distance makes that impractical, ask whether the seller will allow an independent mobile inspection. A refusal is a reason to walk away.
- Do not send an upfront wire transfer when it is the only accepted payment method. The FTC’s September 2026 alert says: “Walk away if the dealer insists on an upfront payment by wire transfer only.”
- Report suspected fraud. If you suspect a scam or have lost money, report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
How much do the reported scam figures say about car listings?
They show that social-media fraud is a broader concern, not how common car scams are on any one platform. The FTC reported that U.S. consumers lost $2.1 billion to scams that started on social media in 2025, and that Facebook had the greatest reported social-media scam losses that year. These figures come from FTC analysis published in April 2026; they are not specific to cars, Facebook Marketplace listings, or Instagram car ads. The FTC also cautions that most scams are not reported. FTC Data Spotlight, April 2026.
