In practical terms, 18 of the 22 drivers are continuing with an established team or pairing. The four headline personnel changes are Lindblad’s debut, Hadjar’s promotion, and the returns of Bottas and Perez. Cadillac is the only entirely new team on the championship grid.
Arvid Lindblad is the only true 2026 rookie
Arvid Lindblad is the sole driver making his first Formula 1 race start in 2026. The British driver joins Racing Bulls after progressing through karting, Formula 3 and Formula 2. He also completed three FP1 appearances for Red Bull in 2025.

Lindblad’s junior record gives him a substantial platform for his debut. During his first Formula 2 season in 2025, he became the youngest race winner in F2 history. That achievement does not remove the normal demands of an F1 debut, however: he will need to adapt to the speed, tyre management, technical workload and race-distance consistency of Formula 1 while competing against a field containing multiple world champions and long-established Grand Prix winners.
The terminology is important. Lindblad is the only new F1 race driver on the 2026 grid. A driver moving to a new team is not automatically a rookie, and a promotion from one Red Bull-owned team to another is not a first F1 appearance.
Isack Hadjar moves up to Red Bull Racing
Isack Hadjar joins Max Verstappen at Red Bull Racing after moving up from Racing Bulls. He replaces Yuki Tsunoda in the senior team, while Tsunoda moves into a test-and-reserve role rather than retaining a full-time race seat.
Hadjar entered F1 with the 2025 rookie class, but he is not a rookie in 2026. He is a second-year driver and an internal promotion. After recovering from a difficult debut weekend, he scored points in Japan and later secured his first podium at Zandvoort. Those performances led to the move to Red Bull’s main team.
The promotion creates a linked change at both Red Bull teams: Hadjar leaves Racing Bulls, Liam Lawson remains there, and Lindblad takes the second seat. Verstappen, meanwhile, remains Red Bull Racing’s established lead driver.
Cadillac brings back Bottas and Perez
Cadillac enters Formula 1 as the championship’s 11th team, and its driver lineup is built around experience rather than an untested pairing. Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas both return to the full-time F1 race grid.

Neither driver is new to Formula 1. Bottas is a multiple Grand Prix winner and former Mercedes race driver, while Perez is an established winner who previously raced for Red Bull. Their Cadillac seats are therefore comebacks, not rookie appointments.

Cadillac is the first brand-new F1 entity since Haas joined in 2016. For its initial 2026 campaign, the team uses Ferrari engine supply. General Motors is scheduled to introduce its own power unit from 2029, so the team’s competitive and technical identity is expected to develop over several seasons rather than arriving fully formed in its first year.
Audi replaces Kick Sauber without changing the drivers
The former Kick Sauber operation becomes Audi for 2026, but Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto remain together. This is a constructor and brand transition, not a new driver lineup.
That distinction matters when reading the grid. Audi is a new identity in the championship, but Hulkenberg and Bortoleto are not new arrivals as a pairing. Conversely, Cadillac is a genuinely new team and has a new pairing for the championship, even though both of its drivers have extensive F1 experience.
