Everything You Need to Know About Tesla Insurance—and How It Compares With Other Providers

Tesla Insurance is not automatically cheaper. Learn where it is available, how Safety Score and FSD can affect premiums, what California drivers need to know, and how to compare Tesla with Progressive, State Farm, Allstate, GEICO and USAA.

Tesla Insurance can be a competitive option for some Tesla owners, but it is not automatically cheaper than conventional insurers. In most states where it is offered, Tesla uses vehicle data, mileage, driving behavior measured through its Safety Score, and—depending on the state—Full Self-Driving (Supervised) usage to help determine premiums. California is a major exception: Real-Time Insurance is unavailable there, and Safety Score is educational rather than a factor in the premium.

The right way to judge Tesla Insurance is to compare a personalized quote with at least three alternatives using identical liability limits, deductibles, rental benefits, medical coverage and optional endorsements. A lower premium is not a real saving if it comes with less protection or a larger out-of-pocket cost after a crash.

What is Tesla Insurance?

Tesla Insurance is an auto-insurance product integrated into Tesla’s account and mobile-app ecosystem. Tesla says customers can use the Tesla app to request a quote, buy coverage, view policy documents, change coverages, request roadside assistance and file claims.

You need a valid vehicle identification number (VIN) and a current driver’s license to obtain a quote. Tesla Insurance is not required to take delivery of a Tesla. A buyer can use another insurer, provided the required coverage is active before delivery.

Availability is state-specific. Tesla currently lists coverage in:

  • Arizona
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Florida
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Maryland
  • Minnesota
  • Nevada
  • Ohio
  • Oregon
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Utah
  • Virginia

That is 15 states in total, including California, and 14 states outside California. Availability, underwriting arrangements, coverages and pricing rules can change, so do not rely on an old state list. Verify availability when you request the quote.

How Tesla Insurance calculates premiums

Outside California, Tesla’s Real-Time Insurance model can use several types of information:

  • The insured Tesla and its configuration
  • The address where the vehicle is garaged
  • Expected and actual mileage
  • The coverages and limits selected
  • The vehicle’s monthly Safety Score
  • In selected states, use of Full Self-Driving (Supervised)

Tesla says the vehicle supplies the relevant driving information, so customers do not need to install an additional tracking device for this model. That does not mean the policy is data-free: the vehicle’s driving and usage information is part of the rating approach outside California.

What is the Tesla Safety Score?

Safety Score is a driving-behavior score calculated over a recent driving period. Tesla says the score combines safety-related driving factors and that a higher score can reduce the premium. More miles generally mean greater exposure and can also increase the premium, even when the driving itself is careful.

There is no reliable universal “Tesla Insurance discount” percentage. The effect of Safety Score varies with the state, vehicle, coverage, driving profile and policy terms. The score’s factors can also differ according to the vehicle’s hardware, software version, configuration, model, trim, model year and region.

In practical terms, a Tesla owner should not assume that a high score guarantees a low bill. The score is only one part of a state-specific pricing model, and the initial quote may not predict every future monthly premium.

How often can the price change?

Tesla says premiums may change:

  • Immediately after certain policy changes, such as changing coverage or limits
  • Monthly as mileage or Safety Score information changes
  • At renewal because of changes to rates, the vehicle, mileage, Full Self-Driving usage or Safety Score

Tesla also says it will notify policyholders in advance of a new monthly premium. That structure is different from a conventional policy where a telematics result may be reviewed primarily at renewal. Before choosing Tesla Insurance, ask whether you are comfortable with a bill that can move during the policy term rather than only at renewal.

Does Full Self-Driving make Tesla Insurance cheaper?

Not automatically. Tesla’s FSD (Supervised) insurance benefit is offered in the 14 non-California states where Tesla Insurance is available. Depending on the state and when the policy renews, the benefit may appear as an FSD discount or operate through Safety Score with FSD (Supervised).

Tesla’s published 2026 schedule shows that implementation and renewal timing are staggered by state. Treat that schedule as the current implementation plan, not a permanent promise. FSD use is not a guarantee of a lower premium for every driver, vehicle or policy.

California is a materially different Tesla Insurance product

California policyholders should not assume that information about Tesla’s Real-Time Insurance model applies to them.

  • Real-Time Insurance is not available in California.
  • Safety Score is educational in California and does not affect the premium.
  • Tesla still offers app-based quoting, policy management and claims functions.

Tesla’s coverage information also reports a California general-rate increase of 12.4% approved for policies with effective dates beginning August 11, 2025, along with changes to certain available coverage limits. That was a California-specific rate action, not a nationwide Tesla Insurance price increase.

California claims-handling warning

California shoppers should also review recent regulatory information before choosing a carrier. On October 3, 2025, the California Department of Insurance announced enforcement actions involving Tesla Insurance Services, Tesla Insurance Company and State National Insurance Company. The department alleged repeated failures involving claims-handling obligations, including delayed claim payments and untimely responses to consumers.

This announcement describes allegations and regulatory action. It should not be rewritten as a final finding that every Tesla claim was mishandled. It does, however, give California customers a reason to examine claims-service information, complaint data and policy terms rather than evaluating the product solely by its quote.

What does Tesla Insurance cover?

Tesla lists the main categories found in a standard auto policy:

Coverage What it generally does What to compare
Bodily-injury liability Helps pay for injuries to other people when you are legally responsible. The per-person and per-accident limits.
Property-damage liability Helps pay for damage you cause to another person’s vehicle or property. The limit, especially because repair costs can be high.
Collision Helps cover damage to your Tesla from a collision, subject to the deductible. The deductible, valuation method and repair process.
Comprehensive Typically addresses covered non-collision losses such as theft, weather, vandalism or falling objects. The deductible and covered-loss exclusions.
Rental reimbursement Helps pay for a temporary replacement vehicle after a covered loss. The daily limit, total limit and eligible rental period.
Roadside assistance Provides assistance for eligible roadside events under the policy terms. Service limits, towing distance and exclusions.
Uninsured/underinsured motorist Can help when the at-fault driver has no insurance or insufficient insurance. Limits, deductibles and whether coverage can be rejected in your state.
Medical payments or personal-injury protection May help with medical costs or related expenses, depending on the state. Required or optional status, limits and coordination with health coverage.
Loan/lease gap coverage May help cover the difference between a vehicle’s value and the remaining loan or lease balance after a qualifying total loss. Whether it is offered in your state and its conditions.

Not every coverage, limit or endorsement is available in every state. The policy documents—not a general coverage list—control what is insured.

Do not overlook Tesla-specific repair questions

When comparing Tesla Insurance with another carrier, ask how the insurer handles:

  • Replacement parts and the availability of specialized Tesla components
  • Battery-related damage and inspection
  • Structural repairs and post-repair diagnostics
  • Sensor, camera and driver-assistance-system calibration
  • Rental duration when parts or repair appointments are delayed
  • The process for selecting or approving a repair facility
  • Disagreements over repair estimates, supplements or total-loss valuation

EV repairs can involve specialized parts, equipment and technicians. GEICO’s EV guidance notes that electric vehicles can sometimes cost more to insure because specialized parts and repairs may be more expensive. That does not establish which insurer will be cheapest for your Tesla, and Tesla Insurance materials do not create a universal Tesla-certified repair guarantee. Get the repair and calibration details in writing before a claim occurs.

Tesla Insurance compared with other providers

A conventional carrier may offer a lower price, more predictable renewal process, a local agent, broader vehicle-brand experience or a different approach to driving data. The following comparisons describe program structure—not guaranteed prices.

Progressive Snapshot

Progressive’s Snapshot is the closest major comparison to Tesla’s behavior-based pricing concept. Progressive says Snapshot uses how, how much and when a customer drives to personalize the rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In most states, participation produces an initial discount and the final rate is determined at renewal. Progressive also warns that high-risk driving can increase the rate. The company reports an average annual savings figure for customers who save with Snapshot, but that company-reported average is not a guaranteed result for a Tesla owner.

Potential fit: A Tesla owner who wants telematics but prefers a conventional insurer that also covers many non-Tesla vehicles.

Compare carefully: Ask what data Snapshot collects, whether poor results can raise the price, and how renewal-based adjustments compare with Tesla’s monthly Safety Score changes.

State Farm Drive Safe & Save

State Farm’s Drive Safe & Save uses the State Farm app and, in its standard setup, a Bluetooth beacon. State Farm says eligible drivers can receive an initial participation discount and potentially save up to 30%, although actual discounts vary by state. The program is unavailable in California, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

State Farm says the discount is generally recalculated at renewal and that the program will not add a surcharge solely through the program, subject to state-specific terms.

Potential fit: A driver who wants a telematics discount but prefers an agent-centered insurer and a renewal-based adjustment.

Compare carefully: Check the state-specific rules, the beacon requirement and the difference between a participation discount and a renewal discount.

Allstate Drivewise

Allstate Drivewise is an optional app-based program. Allstate says participation can produce a discount, while driving behavior can affect the renewal price; in some states, high-risk driving can increase the rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The program evaluates behaviors such as speed, braking, phone activity and late-night driving. Allstate says its driving-data collection is provided by Arity, an Allstate affiliate, and that location and related driving data are collected under the program’s terms.

Potential fit: A driver who wants a large national carrier with app-based telematics.

Compare carefully: Review the privacy terms and whether poor driving results can increase the rate in your state. Tesla’s system and Allstate’s app-based system do not collect or evaluate data in exactly the same way.

GEICO

GEICO describes EV insurance as using the same core coverage categories as ordinary auto insurance and specifically lists Tesla among the EV makes it insures. Its EV guidance notes that specialized parts and repairs can sometimes make EVs more expensive to insure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Potential fit: A Tesla owner who wants a conventional quote benchmark and does not want a behavior-based rating program.

Compare carefully: Ask how the insurer handles battery damage, specialized parts, repair-facility access, calibration and rental time. GEICO’s inclusion of Tesla does not mean it will be the lowest-priced option for your vehicle.

USAA SafePilot and SafePilot Miles

USAA offers SafePilot and SafePilot Miles to eligible members. SafePilot can provide an enrollment discount and an earned renewal discount of up to 30% in select locations. SafePilot Miles is designed for lower-mileage drivers and uses mileage-based pricing.

Both programs require a USAA auto policy and smartphone app, and state restrictions apply. USAA says SafePilot driving scores are used to calculate discounts and do not negatively affect the policy rate, although the overall premium can still change for other reasons.

How to compare Tesla Insurance fairly

Use this process instead of comparing a Tesla quote with a quick online number from another carrier.

  1. Confirm availability. Check whether Tesla Insurance is offered in your state and whether your quote uses Safety Score, FSD (Supervised) usage or neither. California customers should expect a different model.
  2. Prepare accurate information. Have the VIN, driver’s-license information, garaging address, annual mileage, driver history and current policy details available. Inaccurate mileage or address information can make quotes misleading.
  3. Get multiple quotes. Obtain a Tesla quote and at least three quotes from conventional carriers. Include at least one carrier that does not require telematics if you do not want behavior-based pricing.
  4. Match the coverage. Use the same bodily-injury liability limits, property-damage limit, uninsured/underinsured-motorist limits, collision and comprehensive deductibles, rental limits, medical or PIP selections and endorsements.
  5. Compare the total cost. Look at the initial payment, recurring premium, fees, possible mileage changes and renewal terms. Do not treat a temporary enrollment discount as a permanent price.
  6. Understand the data model. Ask what information is collected, whether phone or location data is involved, whether a poor score can increase the premium, and whether the adjustment occurs monthly or only at renewal.
  7. Investigate claim handling. Ask how repairs, parts, calibration, supplements, total-loss valuation and rental extensions are handled for your Tesla.
  8. Check the company, not just the price. Verify that the insurer and agent are licensed in your state. Review complaint information and financial-strength information through your state insurance department and recognized ratings sources.
  9. Requote at renewal. Tesla’s Safety Score version, state approvals, insurer rates, coverage options and your own mileage can change. A policy that was attractive at purchase may not remain the best value.

Who should consider Tesla Insurance?

Tesla Insurance may be worth quoting if:

  • You live in an eligible state.
  • You are comfortable with vehicle-based driving data being used outside California.
  • You want to manage insurance through the Tesla app.
  • You drive in a way that may produce a favorable Safety Score.
  • You want to investigate whether FSD (Supervised) affects your quote in your state.
  • You are willing to monitor monthly pricing rather than assuming the initial quote is permanent.

Who may prefer another insurer?

A different carrier may be a better fit if:

  • Tesla Insurance is unavailable where you live.
  • You prefer a traditional agent or a broader local service network.
  • You do not want vehicle-based driving data used to rate your policy.
  • You prefer telematics adjustments only at renewal—or no telematics at all.
  • You need a coverage, limit or endorsement Tesla does not offer in your state.
  • You want a carrier whose claims and repair process you have already evaluated.
  • You are in California and want to weigh the state-specific claims-handling concerns alongside price and coverage.

Bottom line: is Tesla Insurance worth it?

There is no responsible nationwide answer to “Is Tesla Insurance cheaper?” The premium depends on your state, garaging location, Tesla model, mileage, driving history, claims history, selected limits, deductibles and the insurer’s underwriting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tesla Insurance is most accurately viewed as a data-driven, app-managed option that may reward certain driving profiles and offers a distinct pricing experience outside California. Progressive, State Farm, Allstate and USAA offer their own telematics programs with different data practices and timing, while GEICO provides a useful conventional EV-insurance benchmark. None is guaranteed to be cheapest.

Get comparable quotes, read the policy terms, ask specific questions about Tesla repairs and calibration, and check the price again at renewal. That process will tell you more than any national ranking or advertised discount.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need Tesla Insurance to take delivery of a Tesla?

No. Tesla Insurance is optional. You may use another insurer as long as the required coverage is active before delivery.

Is Tesla Insurance cheaper than Progressive, State Farm, Allstate, GEICO or USAA?

There is no universal winner. Pricing depends on state, driver, Tesla model, mileage, coverage limits, deductibles, driving history and claims history. Compare personalized quotes with identical coverage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Tesla Safety Score affect insurance in California?

No. Tesla says Real-Time Insurance is unavailable in California and Safety Score is educational there; it does not affect California premiums.

Can using Full Self-Driving make Tesla Insurance cheaper?

It may provide an insurance benefit in Tesla’s 14 non-California insurance states, depending on state and policy timing. It is not an automatic discount for every driver or policy.

Can Tesla Insurance premiums increase after I buy the policy?

Yes. Outside California, Tesla says premiums may change immediately after policy changes, monthly as mileage or Safety Score changes, and at renewal because of rate, vehicle, mileage, FSD-use or Safety Score changes.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Quote Tesla Insurance, but do not assume the Tesla name or Safety Score makes it the cheapest option. Match every important coverage term, understand how driving data affects the price, investigate Tesla-specific repair handling, and compare again at renewal.
