Ultium is GM’s name for a flexible family of electric-vehicle architecture, battery and propulsion technologies—not one identical battery pack shared by every GM EV. The cell chemistry, pack design, range, charging capability and connector vary by model, trim and model year. GM is also developing new battery formats, so an Ultium vehicle’s specifications should be checked against its own model-year information rather than inferred from the platform name.
What is GM’s Ultium platform?
Ultium describes a set of technologies GM uses to build electric vehicles. The company’s platform concept combines battery modules and packs adapted to different vehicle layouts with multiple drive units and motors. GM has also described a wireless battery-management system intended to let different vehicle types use common components.
That flexibility is the point: an electric truck, SUV and car do not need to use the same pack shape or drivetrain configuration just because they belong to the Ultium family. The name alone does not tell you a vehicle’s battery capacity, chemistry, voltage, charging rate, range or charging connector.
What batteries and cell formats does Ultium use?
GM’s battery plans have evolved from its initial large-format pouch-cell description toward additional chemistries and formats. The table separates the original platform concept from later announcements and planned production; an announced technology is not proof that it is already in a retail vehicle.

| Battery path | What GM has said | What that means for buyers |
|---|---|---|
| Large-format pouch cells | In its March 2020 platform announcement, GM said pouch cells could be stacked vertically or horizontally to suit different vehicle layouts. Its existing pouch-cell chemistry has been described as nickel cobalt manganese aluminum (NCMA). | This was part of the original flexible-pack concept. It does not establish the chemistry or pack design in every Ultium model. |
| Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) | GM’s July 2025 article said Spring Hill would produce additional chemistries, including LFP, alongside existing NCMA pouch cells. | The announcement identifies LFP as part of GM’s production plans, but it does not specify which retail models use it or when a particular vehicle will receive it. |
| Lithium manganese-rich (LMR) prismatic cells | GM and LG Energy Solution announced in May 2025 that they planned pre-production in late 2027 and commercial production in the United States in 2028 for future electric trucks and full-size SUVs. On September 29, 2026, GM said Ultium Cells planned to make LMR prismatic cells at Spring Hill, Tennessee. | These are future plans, not evidence that LMR cells are already installed in retail vehicles. GM says the planned cells have 33% greater energy density than LFP-based cells at comparable cost; that is GM’s comparison, not an independent validation. |
In a July 2025 GM article, company president Mark Reuss wrote: “With the Ultium Cells sites in Spring Hill and Warren, Ohio, GM has the largest OEM battery cell manufacturing capacity in this country.” That is GM’s company claim about its manufacturing capacity.
How to interpret Ultium’s original specifications
GM’s March 2020 announcement outlined a planned range of battery options from 50 to 200 kWh and estimated vehicle range of “up to 400 miles or more.” It also described 400-volt packs with up to 200-kW fast charging for most vehicles and 800-volt packs with 350-kW charging for trucks. These were early platform design descriptions and estimates—not current specifications guaranteed across the Ultium lineup.

- 📏【Applicable Models】Measure the charger body and check its outline, wall clearance, cable path, conduit, brackets, and protruding plugs before choosing this EV charger cover for GM Ultium PowerUP Level 2 Charger 2022-2025. A custom size option is available to better match your setup. Compare the overall unit shape and nearby installation space before ordering, since these details can affect how the cover sits and help reduce fit problems and unnecessary returns.
- 🛡️【Coverage Between Uses】Keep the main charger housing covered when it is not in use, helping reduce direct contact with dust, leaves, and light debris. The box-shaped profile surrounds the installed unit rather than only the front, giving the charging area a tidier look while adding a simple barrier around the charger body. Suitable for routine use in garages, driveways, carports, and similar residential charging spaces.
- 🧵【Oxford Fabric Construction】Black Oxford fabric forms the cover body and gives it a neat, structured shape around wall-mounted charging equipment. The material supports coverage around the charger housing while remaining simple to position over the unit. For buyers comparing EV charging station covers, this construction offers a straightforward way to keep the main housing covered and help limit everyday contact with dust and debris.
- 🔌【Charging Cable Clearance】The lower opening gives the charging cable a clear route outside the cover while the main charger housing stays enclosed. This layout works with an installed wall-mounted setup and reduces the need to reposition the charging lead each time the cover is used. By keeping the cable path open and easy to identify, the cover supports a cleaner, more organized charging area for routine use at home.
- 🏠【Home Charging Areas】Use this cover around wall-mounted EV charging equipment in garages, driveways, carports, and similar residential spaces. The simple black finish blends easily with home setups while the box-shaped profile keeps the charger body covered between uses. For owners who want a tidier charging area with less direct contact from loose dust, leaves, or debris, it provides a straightforward everyday coverage solution.
For a real vehicle, use the figures GM publishes for its exact model, trim and model year. A useful comparison should include:
- Battery capacity and chemistry, when GM publishes them.
- EPA range for the exact configuration, not a range figure attached to another trim or vehicle.
- Peak DC charging rate and, where documented, the charging curve; peak power alone does not describe an entire charging session.
- Pack voltage, connector type and any adapter requirement.
- Warranty terms and the vehicle’s availability in your region.
As one example of why the model matters, GM cited an EPA-rated range of up to 492 miles for a particular configuration: the Silverado EV Work Truck Max Range. That number is not an Ultium-wide range claim. GM cautions that actual range varies with factors including temperature, terrain, battery condition, load and use.

Do you need an adapter to charge a GM EV at a Tesla Supercharger?
It depends on the vehicle’s model year, charging port and the charger. In its August 2026 charging guidance, GM said its EVs could use compatible NACS plugs either through an adapter or through a native NACS port. GM expected all 2027 model-year Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC EVs to have native NACS ports; its guidance said many 2026 models still had CCS ports and needed an adapter for NACS chargers.
Those statements are dated GM guidance, not a substitute for checking a specific vehicle and charging location. Before buying an adapter for a CCS-port GM EV, confirm that the connector matches the car, that the charger is compatible with it, and that GM approves the adapter for that vehicle. The cited guidance does not establish one currently approved adapter model and retail listing for every Ultium vehicle.

There is a warranty reason to check carefully: 2026 Chevrolet EV warranty material says damage caused by incompatible charging methods or adapters not sold or approved by GM is not covered. That warning is specific to the cited Chevrolet warranty material; check the warranty for your own vehicle rather than assuming identical terms across GM brands and model years.

- It does tell you that the vehicle belongs to GM’s broader family of EV architecture and battery or propulsion technologies.
- It does not tell you the vehicle’s exact battery chemistry, capacity, pack voltage, EPA range, charging speed or port.
- It does not mean every Ultium-branded vehicle uses the same cell format or battery configuration.
- It does not make future battery plans current equipment: GM’s announced LMR schedule concerns planned production, not confirmed retail deployment.
For ownership or shopping decisions, start with the precise model, trim and model year. Those details—not the Ultium label—are what determine the specifications and charging equipment that apply to the vehicle.
