Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that the G-Class family will gain a smaller version. It has not announced the vehicle’s official name, specifications, price or sale date. “Baby G” is an informal nickname, not a confirmed production name.
What is the Mercedes Baby G?
It is a planned smaller addition to the G-Class family. In its February 20, 2025 strategy announcement, Mercedes-Benz Group AG said: “The legendary G-Class family will be expanded with a new smaller version.” The statement confirms the company’s intention to broaden the lineup, but it does not identify a production model or describe the vehicle’s design or engineering. Is “Baby G” an official name?
No official production name for the smaller G-Class was identified in the sources reviewed. “Baby G” and “mini G” are informal shorthand used in coverage. Until Mercedes-Benz announces a name, neither should be treated as the vehicle’s confirmed badge.
What has Mercedes-Benz announced—and what remains unknown?

When will the Baby G go on sale?
Mercedes-Benz has not announced a sale date in the official statement. MotorTrend’s February 21, 2025 update also noted that the company had not provided details. A separate Mercedes-Benz Media release dated December 2, 2025 described road and test-track trials in Austria for the G-Class Cabriolet, with winter testing in Sweden planned later. How much will the smaller G-Class cost?
Mercedes-Benz has not announced a price. MotorTrend’s article included an older speculative estimate, which should not be read as current pricing or an official guide. There is no confirmed price to use for budgeting or comparison yet.

Will it be electric?
Mercedes-Benz has not confirmed the smaller G-Class’s powertrain, battery or range. Secondary coverage has floated different technical possibilities, but they are not manufacturer specifications. It is premature to describe the model as either electric or combustion-powered.

A SEMA spy-photo article described an apparent smaller-G prototype and reported that its powertrain and market timing were not officially confirmed. It relayed industry-source discussion of a dedicated platform and possible combustion power, and suggested a possible 2027 timeframe. Spy-photo reporting can offer clues about a development program, but it does not establish a final production design, powertrain, launch date or retail specification. Until Mercedes-Benz supplies those details, the company’s brief confirmation of a smaller G remains the dependable baseline.
