Toyota’s so-called “$13,000 pickup truck” is real, but the headline needs several qualifications. The truck is the Toyota Hilux Champ, a Thai-market commercial pickup based on the IMV 0 concept. Its launch price of ฿459,000 converts to roughly $13,000 depending on the exchange rate.
That price is not a U.S. MSRP, and the Hilux Champ is not sold through American Toyota dealerships. It is a basic, two-seat work vehicle designed to carry cargo and accept business-specific conversions—not a cheap, fully equipped replacement for the Tacoma.

What is the Toyota Hilux Champ?
The Hilux Champ is the production version of Toyota’s IMV 0 concept. “IMV” stands for Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicle, while the “0” is pronounced “zero.” Toyota launched the production truck in Thailand on November 27, 2023, and began taking orders immediately.
Although it carries the Hilux name, it is not simply a stripped-down version of the regular Hilux pickup, nor is it a low-cost U.S.-market Tacoma. Toyota developed it as a simple, adaptable commercial vehicle for businesses and tradespeople. The flat deck includes bolt holes for fitting different bodies and accessories, allowing the same basic vehicle to become a delivery truck, food vendor, mobile shop, or other specialized work vehicle.

Where the $13,000 price comes from
Toyota’s original Thai launch price ran from ฿459,000 to ฿577,000 across eight grades. The lowest figure—฿459,000—is the source of the “$13,000 Toyota pickup” headline. It is an approximate currency conversion, not a price Toyota advertises for the United States.
Toyota Thailand’s quotation page still lists the Hilux Champ with a starting price of ฿459,000. However, Toyota’s more detailed model page currently displays “Price ฿519,000 +” and lists diesel versions from ฿519,000 to ฿615,000. Those figures illustrate why the exact variant matters: engine, transmission, wheelbase, body style, and equipment all affect the price.
| Price claim | What it actually means |
|---|---|
| ฿459,000 | Thai-market starting price shown by Toyota’s quotation page |
| About $13,000 | Approximate conversion of the ฿459,000 starting price |
| ฿519,000–฿615,000 | Prices Toyota currently lists for various diesel versions on its model page |
| U.S. MSRP | None—the Hilux Champ is not sold in the United States |
Exchange rates, taxes, shipping, registration, dealer costs, and local equipment would also affect the final price in any country outside Thailand. Therefore, nobody in the U.S. can buy a new Hilux Champ for $13,000.

Engines and available configurations
At launch, Toyota offered three engines:
- 2.0-liter gasoline
- 2.7-liter gasoline
- 2.4-liter diesel
The lineup includes short-wheelbase and long-wheelbase trucks, chassis-cab versions, and unequipped flat-deck configurations. Toyota Thailand’s quotation selector identifies these versions:
- 2.0 Gasoline MT SWB
- 2.7 Gasoline AT SWB
- 2.7 Gasoline AT C&C SWB
- 2.4 Diesel MT C&C LWB
- 2.4 Diesel MT LWB
- 2.4 Diesel AT SWB
- 2.4 Diesel AT LWB
- 2.4 Diesel AT SWB Attractive Package
In this list, SWB means short wheelbase, LWB means long wheelbase, and C&C refers to chassis-cab. Transmission choices are five-speed manual and six-speed automatic, depending on the grade.

Diesel engine specifications and payload
Toyota’s current Thai specification page identifies the 2.4-liter diesel as the 2GD-FTV, a four-cylinder, 16-valve, DOHC engine with VNT turbocharging, an intercooler, and direct-injection common-rail fueling. Toyota lists output of 150 PS and 400 Nm of torque.
For its long-wheelbase diesel specification, Toyota publishes the following dimensions:
| Specification | Long-wheelbase diesel |
|---|---|
| Length | 5,300 mm |
| Width | 1,785 mm |
| Height | 1,735 mm |
| Wheelbase | 3,085 mm |
| Minimum turning radius | 5.4 meters |
| Drive layout | 2WD |
| Seating | Two |
| Maximum load | 1,000 kg |
The one-tonne payload figure applies to Toyota’s specified long-wheelbase diesel configuration. It should not automatically be treated as the payload rating for every Hilux Champ. Gasoline models, short-wheelbase models, chassis-cab trucks, and customized vehicles may have different ratings.
What equipment does the cheap Toyota pickup include?
The Hilux Champ is inexpensive partly because Toyota leaves out many features that are routine on modern passenger vehicles. The Thai specification page lists standard equipment including:
- Air conditioning
- Conventional instrument cluster
- Two speakers
- 12-volt outlet
- Front-pair SRS airbags
- Anti-lock brakes
- Electronic brakeforce distribution
- Three-point front seat belts
- Side-impact protection beams
Several features are listed as unavailable on the published grades:

In practical terms, this is a basic commercial cab with essential safety and operating equipment. It does not provide the technology, refinement, passenger space, or driver assistance buyers may expect from a modern Tacoma, Ford Ranger, or similarly equipped midsize pickup.

Why is it so inexpensive?
Toyota designed the IMV 0 around simplicity and adaptability rather than comfort or lifestyle appeal. Local engineers in Thailand worked on a vehicle with a limited range of engines, straightforward equipment, and a platform intended to accept different commercial bodies.
The buyer can start with a relatively simple chassis and then configure it for a particular business. Toyota said it had information from more than 100 accessory manufacturers and displayed 11 customized models at launch. Potential applications include cargo delivery, food vending, mobile retail, and other small-business uses.
That approach reduces the cost of the base vehicle, but it also explains why the $13,000 figure should not be compared directly with the price of a finished, feature-rich pickup. A converted Hilux Champ with a specialized body and equipment would cost more than the bare starting model.
Is the Hilux Champ sold in the United States?
No. Toyota’s official U.S. truck lineup includes vehicles such as the Tacoma and Tundra, but not the Hilux Champ. Toyota has not announced a U.S.-market version, U.S. MSRP, U.S. launch date, or U.S.-certified Hilux Champ.

That means the claim that Americans can walk into a Toyota dealer and purchase the $13,000 truck is false. The truck’s Thai-market price also cannot simply be converted into an American retail price, because a U.S. vehicle would need to meet different safety, emissions, labeling, and certification requirements.
Can you import one into the U.S.?
Not as a straightforward personal import. Under the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s rules, a vehicle less than 25 years old that was not originally manufactured and certified to meet applicable U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards generally cannot be permanently imported unless it is found eligible and brought into compliance through a Registered Importer.
The relevant nonconforming-vehicle process can also require a bond equal to 150% of the vehicle’s declared value. Emissions requirements are separate: the Environmental Protection Agency says a nonconforming vehicle may need an Independent Commercial Importer to modify, test, and certify it, or the importer must qualify for an applicable exemption.
The familiar 25-year exemption does not make a new Hilux Champ legal to import today. NHTSA measures the exemption from the vehicle’s manufacture date, so a 2023 or newer truck would not qualify until at least 2048. EPA rules create a separate emissions issue even when a vehicle is old enough for the NHTSA age exemption.

FAQ
Is Toyota really selling a $13,000 pickup truck?

What is the Toyota Hilux Champ?
It is the production version of Toyota’s IMV 0 concept: a simple, two-seat commercial pickup designed for cargo work and business-specific conversions. It is not a U.S.-market Tacoma or a regular Hilux with only some equipment removed.
Can I import a new Hilux Champ into the United States?
Not easily. A new Thai-market example would generally need to meet U.S. safety and emissions requirements or be modified and certified through the applicable Registered Importer and Independent Commercial Importer processes. The 25-year exemption does not apply to a 2023 or newer truck.
How much can the Hilux Champ carry?
Toyota publishes a maximum load of 1,000 kg for its specified long-wheelbase diesel configuration. That number should not be assumed for every engine, wheelbase, chassis-cab model, or customized version.

The Toyota Hilux Champ is a genuine low-cost pickup, but “$13,000” describes the approximate Thai starting price of a bare commercial vehicle—not a U.S.-market truck. It offers simple engines, two seats, a modular flat deck, and useful payload capacity, while giving up much of the technology and comfort found in American pickups. For U.S. buyers, the main limitation is not just equipment: Toyota does not sell it here, and importing a new example is blocked by federal safety and emissions requirements.
