Jensen Motors was a British specialist manufacturer that built cars under its own name while also taking on subcontract manufacturing and commercial-vehicle work. Its story stretches from the marque’s own-car production in 1934 to 1976, with later, separate businesses using the Jensen name. The 1966 Interceptor and four-wheel-drive FF are its best-known later cars, but the range also included earlier Interceptors, the C-V8, Jensen-Healey and Jensen GT.

What Jensen Motors made

Jensen was not solely a sports-car maker. Alongside its own cars, it carried out subcontract work and produced commercial vehicles. The Jensen Museum dates the company’s own-car production from 1934 through 1976, a span that includes very different kinds of cars and does not mean every later Jensen-branded venture was the same company.

The company’s model history is easiest to follow by era and model name. One important wrinkle: “Interceptor” was used for a 1950s car and then again for the better-known series that began in 1966.

Jensen model timeline

The production figures below are those published in The Jensen Museum’s model table; the page does not state a publication date. They are historical reference figures, not a new independent count. The Museum marks some early figures as believed totals, so treat those entries as estimates rather than exact audited production.

The 1966 Interceptor and FF

Interceptor: the celebrated later series

The later Interceptor entered production in 1966. The Museum lists three main series: Mk I, Mk II and Mk III, with the Mk III accounting for the largest listed total. It also records the Convertible separately. When discussing a car or looking for parts, identify whether it is the 1950–1957 Interceptor or a later-series car, then establish its exact series and year; the shared name alone is not enough to identify the vehicle.

FF: a different drivetrain and model identity

The Jensen Owners’ Club says the Interceptor and FF arrived as two new models in the 1966 launch period. The FF was not a cosmetic package or badge applied to an Interceptor: it had a distinct four-wheel-drive system. The Club and Museum give its total production as 320 through December 1971, divided into 195 Mk I, 110 Mk II and 15 Mk III cars. Avoid unqualified claims that it was “the first four-wheel-drive car ever”; that kind of priority claim depends on how the category is defined and is not established by these model histories.

Other late-period models

The C-V8 preceded the Interceptor and FF, while the Jensen SP followed the FF as a two-wheel-drive flagship. The Jensen-Healey and Jensen GT show another side of the range: a roadster and a later GT alongside the larger Interceptor coupé and convertible. These models had different roles, so production totals are useful for context but do not make them directly comparable as alternatives for the same buyer.

Leadership, receivership and the Jensen name after 1976

The Jensen Owners’ Club says brothers Richard and Alan Jensen were closely involved in design, production and development until they left the company in 1966. The Club dates the original company’s receivership to 1975 and says it continued trading until May 1976. Afterward, Jensen Special Products and Jensen Parts and Service were established. The Museum also records a small run of Interceptor Series 4 cars from 1983 to 1992, which belongs to later Jensen-name activity rather than an uninterrupted continuation of the original 1930s–1970s manufacturer.

What the current Jensen-branded project says

Jensen Works/Jensen International describes the Interceptor GTX as an ultra-limited-edition, high-performance, track-focused car intended to preview future roadgoing models. Its stated sequence is further GTX development, then a road-going GTR, followed by a more luxury-oriented GT. The company says the cars are to be designed, engineered and handbuilt in the UK with specialist partners. These are the company’s descriptions and plans, not independent confirmation of delivery dates or completed production.
