The ranking below compares factory-rated engine horsepower for four North American passenger cars sold under the Mazdaspeed name. Model year and rating source matter: Mazda’s technical sheets identify SAE net output for several entries, while the Protegé figure has weaker documentation.

What the ranking measures—and what it does not
Horsepower here means the manufacturer’s rated engine output. Mazda’s technical sheets use SAE net horsepower for the Miata and the 2006 Mazdaspeed6, and the 2010 Mazda3 sheet specifies SAE net output for the Mazdaspeed3. The figures should not be confused with power measured at the wheels, which is lower after drivetrain losses and varies with measurement conditions.
This is a ranking by rated horsepower alone. It does not establish which car accelerates quickest, handles best or is most enjoyable to drive; those comparisons need separate evidence and criteria.

Scope: North American Mazdaspeed-badged cars
The four entries are the North American factory passenger cars covered here: Mazdaspeed Protegé, Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata, Mazdaspeed3 and Mazdaspeed6. Mazda-related performance models appeared in other markets under names including MPS, Atenza and Axela, but this comparison does not claim to be a complete worldwide catalogue or compare ratings across different market-specific standards.

Mazda USA’s model-year specification materials provide the strongest evidence for the Mazdaspeed6, Mazdaspeed3 and MX-5 Miata ratings. The 2006 Mazdaspeed6 and the 2004/2005 Miata sheets explicitly give SAE net output and rated engine speed; Mazda’s 2007 Mazdaspeed6 deck independently lists 274 hp. The Protegé’s 170-hp rating is included with a clear qualification because the available support is secondary, not an identified Mazda specification sheet.

Mazda’s Management Bios page also records the company’s Mazdaspeed6 and Mazdaspeed3 history, but it is not the source for the horsepower figures in the table.
