For most enthusiasts, the X300 is the best all-round Jaguar XJ: it brought back the marque’s familiar rounded styling after the angular XJ40 while retaining a more modern foundation than the classic Series cars. That is an editorial verdict, not a reliability finding. This ranking weighs design character most heavily, followed by historical importance, engineering progress, comfort and usability for the car’s era, and ownership practicality. Jaguar’s own heritage records establish the generations and their major transitions, but do not provide a generation-by-generation reliability or ownership-cost comparison.

How this ranking is judged

The order is an enthusiast’s assessment, not a measured consensus. Design character and historical importance carry the most weight: the XJ is both a flagship saloon and one of Jaguar’s defining design lines. Engineering progress comes next, with comfort and usability judged against each car’s period rather than today’s expectations. Ownership practicality matters, but it cannot be scored confidently by generation without comparable reliability, cost, and condition data.

Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust’s catalogue recognizes the sequence from Series I through X351, while Jaguar’s anniversary material calls X350 the seventh generation and X351 the eighth. Dates below are approximate; market and model-year conventions vary. The Series III’s XJ6 and XJ12, for example, have different recorded end dates.

Jaguar XJ generations ranked

Rank Generation Approximate period Why it ranks here
1 X300 1994–1997 Strong balance of traditional XJ design and a more recent place in the lineage
2 Series I 1968–1973 The original generation, with the greatest foundational importance
3 X350 2003–2009 A major engineering change through aluminium-primary construction
4 X351 2010–2019 A confident new design language and continuation of aluminium-led construction
5 Series III 1979–1986 (XJ6); XJ12 through 1992 A long-running final expression of the classic-series body
6 X308 1997–2003 A significant later V8-era step, though less of a defining break in this ranking
7 XJ40 1986–1994 A substantial redesign and engine transition, with more angular styling
8 Series II 1973–1979 An important continuation of the original design, but a less decisive milestone here

Why each generation earns its place

1. X300 (1994–1997): the best balance

The X300 ranks first because it reconciled continuity and change particularly well. After the XJ40’s angular styling, Jaguar returned to a more traditional, rounded XJ appearance. The Heritage Trust describes the X300 as a much-revised successor to the XJ40, rather than simply a new skin. That combination gives it a strong design identity without placing it as far from modern expectations as the earliest cars. Its short catalogue period does not diminish its importance as a clear styling course correction.

Jaguar Heritage’s 1994 Sovereign 4.0-litre record provides an official example of the generation. The ranking does not imply that X300s are more reliable or cheaper to maintain than other XJs.

2. Series I (1968–1973): the essential original

The first XJ is difficult to place anywhere but near the top because it established the lineage being ranked. Its significance is foundational: later generations could evolve, reinterpret, or depart from an identity that Series I first set out. Its comfort and equipment should be considered in the context of its own era, not measured against the safety technology, convenience, or refinement expected of a contemporary saloon.

3. X350 (2003–2009): the major engineering leap

The X350 earns a high place for changing the XJ’s underlying construction. Jaguar describes it as the seventh generation; its body architecture was primarily aluminium, a feature that made it a distinct engineering break rather than a routine update. Jaguar says the car was introduced to the public at motor shows in autumn 2002 and entered the model range in 2003. The Heritage Trust’s 2002 XJ8 record documents the launch-era car.

4. X351 (2010–2019): a new visual chapter

The eighth-generation XJ launched in 2010 with a design language led by Ian Callum. Its body remained primarily aluminium, with magnesium and composite alloys also used, according to the Heritage Trust. The X351 ranks below X350 here because the earlier car represents the more striking engineering break; the later generation’s strongest contribution is its confident visual reinvention. The Trust identifies a 2019 example as the last UK right-hand-drive production car, not as proof that every market’s production ended on the same date. See its record of the last RHD X351.

5. Series III (1979–1986 XJ6; XJ12 through 1992): the classic form carried forward

Series III was the final classic-series body before the XJ40. Its extended run, especially the XJ12’s continuation through 1992 in the Trust’s catalogue, gives it a substantial place in the XJ story. It ranks below Series I because it developed an established identity rather than originating it, but that does not make it a lesser car for every enthusiast or use case.

6. X308 (1997–2003): a notable later-era bridge

The X308 followed the X300 in 1997 and belongs to the later V8-era XJ story. It sits in the middle of this ranking because it is an important continuation, but the evidence used here does not support a detailed claim that it is more comfortable, dependable, or economical than the generations around it. Jaguar’s model catalogue lists the period; the ranking’s placement reflects the stated design-and-history weighting.

7. XJ40 (1986–1994): a real break, not the top design choice

The XJ40 was a major redesign. Jaguar Heritage records that the AJ6 replaced the classic XK engine in the saloon range, a meaningful engineering transition. Its angular styling also marked a departure from the traditional look that the X300 later restored. It ranks lower on design continuity in this particular comparison, not because the redesign lacked historical importance.

8. Series II (1973–1979): an important evolution

Series II is the next generation in Jaguar’s official catalogue and part of the original XJ design lineage. The available official material establishes its place and approximate period but does not support a detailed list of specification changes for this comparison. It ranks last only under the chosen criteria: it is less of a starting point than Series I and less of a major design or engineering break than several later generations. That is not a verdict on the quality of an individual Series II car.

Which Jaguar XJ generation should you buy?

Use the ranking to identify which era appeals to you, then judge the actual car. The cited heritage records are useful for lineage and design history, not for determining the condition, maintenance needs, or likely cost of a particular used example. Before buying, compare the vehicle’s documentation with the exact model and have its condition assessed by someone familiar with that generation.

  • Confirm the exact generation and specification. Production periods overlap or differ by model, and the Series III XJ6 and XJ12 dates are not identical.
  • Prioritize the individual car’s records and inspection. A generation-level ranking cannot substitute for evidence about maintenance and present condition.
  • Check parts availability by model and item. Jaguar Land Rover Classic Parts lists genuine parts for several generations, including XJ40, X300, X308, and X350, but a catalogue listing does not guarantee that a specific part is in stock. See its Jaguar parts catalogue and service information.

What the ranking cannot tell you

No generation can be called the objectively most reliable or cheapest to own on the basis of the cited official heritage material: it does not publish a comparable reliability table or ownership-cost analysis. Treat any such claim as a question requiring model-specific evidence, not as a conclusion from this historical ranking. The final choice depends on which design and era you value and on the documented condition of the particular car.
