Year-by-year complaint counts can offer a rough screening signal, but they are not a lifetime reliability score. For a used-car decision, combine carefully qualified year-level information with the exact vehicle’s recall status, maintenance records, and condition.
Can you rank the most reliable Toyota 4Runner years?
Not conclusively. The available sources do not provide a population-level dataset that controls for mileage, age, number of vehicles sold, maintenance, and use across model years. Without those controls, a definitive ranking would claim more than the evidence supports.
One third-party ranking compares complaints reported during each model year’s first three years, but it does not adjust counts for vehicles sold. That makes it a rough comparison of reported complaints under that method—not a measure of an individual vehicle’s chance of failure or its expected lifetime reliability. Why raw complaint counts can mislead
- Counts are not adjusted for how many vehicles were sold or are in service.
- They can reflect differences in time on the road, mileage, owner reporting, maintenance, and usage.
- A higher count is not proof that a model year is less reliable, and a lower count is not proof that it is more reliable.
How to evaluate a used 4Runner year and the specific vehicle
- Use year-level rankings only as an initial screen. Check what each ranking measures, the reporting window, when the data were accessed, and whether counts are normalized for sales or exposure. For the cited comparison, the window is each model year’s first three years and counts are not sales-adjusted.
- Check recalls by VIN. Use NHTSA’s recall lookup for the vehicle you are considering. NHTSA distinguishes vehicle-specific unrepaired recall results from general year, make, and model searches. Ask the seller for records showing completed recall repairs.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Ask a qualified mechanic to assess the actual vehicle, including rust and wear, rather than inferring condition from its model year. Review service records where available. The sources here do not provide a model-year-specific maintenance or longevity dataset.
Why recall totals do not rank reliability
A recall campaign’s existence or total does not establish whether a particular vehicle is affected, whether its repair remains outstanding, or how reliable the model year is overall. Applicability can depend on production details. For example, NHTSA campaign 25V595 covers a limited production window for 2025 4Runner vehicles: the report identifies vehicles produced August 6–9, 2024, and lists seven potentially involved units. That campaign-specific example is not a general reliability estimate for 2025. Check the candidate’s VIN for applicability and completion status using the NHTSA campaign report.

What to inspect on older 4Runners
Give frame condition particular attention on older examples. A 2022 Federal Register document discusses complaint age distributions for the 1996–2002 and 2003–2009 model-year groups, but that historical context does not show that every vehicle in those ranges is affected or that any one year is categorically unsafe. Have a mechanic inspect the frame and the rest of the vehicle; the Federal Register document is not a substitute for evaluating the specific 4Runner.

The evidence here does not quantify reliability differences between generations or establish a causal first-year redesign penalty. Treat claims that a generation or launch year is automatically better or worse as unproven unless they are supported by comparable data and a stated method.
