Every Ford Mustang Generation Ranked Worst to Best

Which Mustang generation is best? This editorial ranking compares all seven generations by design identity, performance, usability and historical importance.

Ranked by how well each generation balances design, performance, everyday usability and historical significance, the Mustang’s weakest era is the Mustang II generation, while the first generation earns the top spot. This is an editorial ranking, not an official Ford verdict: Ford’s history pages document milestones but do not publish a generation-by-generation ranking or comparative reliability data.

How this ranking works

The ranking weighs four considerations: a generation’s design identity, the range and character of its performance offerings, its usability as a road car, and its importance to the Mustang’s history. No generation-by-generation reliability or safety dataset is established by the cited Ford material, so neither is scored here. The order is a judgment about the Mustang as a complete model line, not a claim that every car in a given generation is better or worse than every car in another.

Ford’s 2024 anniversary coverage counts seven generations. Generation boundaries and model-year conventions can vary in informal usage; this list follows the seven-generation framework Ford used in that coverage, while using Ford’s official timeline for specific turning points.

Every Mustang generation, ranked

  1. 7th — Mustang II (1974–1978)

The Mustang II ranks last because it represents the sharpest break from the original car’s combination of long-hood styling and broad performance ambition. Its smaller, more restrained identity made it a product of a different moment in the Mustang story, but it is less compelling against the criteria used here: design presence, performance breadth and the sense of occasion associated with the nameplate. Last place does not make every Mustang II a poor car; it means this generation makes the least persuasive all-around case in this particular comparison.

    • Display Piece: A must-have collectible for car enthusiasts and model collectors.
  2. 6th — Third generation, Fox-body (1979–1993)

The Fox-platform Mustang, introduced in 1979, marked a major reset after the Mustang II. Its long run and distinct squared-off design give it a clear identity, and its return to a more performance-focused role helped carry the badge into a new era. It places above Mustang II for its stronger sporting character, but below the higher-ranked generations because its historical and design impact is less singular than the original’s or the later returns to form.

  3. 5th — Fourth generation (1994–2004)

The fourth generation updated the Mustang’s proportions and styling while keeping the familiar front-engine, rear-drive formula. It helped the car remain recognizably a Mustang through the 1990s and into the new century. Its place in the middle reflects a solid, usable continuation rather than a defining reinvention: it matters to the model’s continuity, but does not stand out as strongly on the combined criteria as the generations above it.

    • Display-Ready Models: Create a stunning Ford model that’s ready to showcase in your collection or as a standout display piece.
  4. 4th — Sixth generation (2015–2023)

The sixth generation broadened the Mustang’s appeal by pairing its traditional identity with a more contemporary, globally oriented presentation. It earns a high-middle position for balancing recognizable Mustang character with everyday road-car usability. It falls short of the top three because those generations either established the formula, made an especially important historical turn, or delivered a particularly cohesive modern interpretation.

  5. 3rd — Fifth generation (2005–2014)

The fifth generation is a strong contender because its retro-inspired design deliberately recalled the early Mustang while presenting a modern car. That clear visual idea gave it a distinctive identity and made the connection to the original unusually legible. It ranks ahead of the sixth generation for the force of that design statement, though it does not displace the original or the generation that most decisively revived the classic Mustang look.
