Which BMW plug-in hybrids are on the U.S. lineup?
BMW’s PHEV overview names these six variants. They span luxury sedans, an M performance sedan and wagon, and two SUVs.

The figures are BMW manufacturer claims, not independent test results. BMW says actual range varies with the vehicle, tires and wheels, driving style, traffic, temperature, accessories and charging frequency. The 2026 warranty booklet also lists 550e xDrive, 750e xDrive, X5 xDrive50e and PHEV M5/XM model-year entries; a warranty roster does not establish that a specific version is currently orderable or available at a particular dealer.
How to interpret BMW’s electric-range numbers
BMW’s overview gives more than one set of range figures. Its model FAQ lists the “up to” values in the table, while a separate passage for 2025/2026 models gives approximate EPA-rated figures that differ for some vehicles—for example, about 25 miles for the 550e and about 36 miles for the 750e. These figures should not be treated as interchangeable or as a single definitive value for every model year.

BMW also notes that some recently released model-year estimates may be preliminary rather than fully EPA certified. For the vehicle you are considering, check the exact year and configuration in the official FuelEconomy.gov listings. The X5 needs particular care: BMW’s current FAQ gives the existing X5 xDrive50e up to 38 miles, while its X5 page describes a next 50e with a preliminary estimate of up to 44 miles and orders beginning in October 2026. Those are not figures to combine across generations.
Does “available today” mean one is at a nearby dealer?
No. BMW’s offers page displayed offers for the 2026 X5 xDrive50e, 2026 750e xDrive and 2027 550e xDrive when checked. These are active new-model-year selling signals, not proof of nationwide inventory, a particular vehicle’s availability, or a guaranteed offer for every buyer. Offers and allocations can change.

Use BMW’s current offers page and local inventory search, then contact a BMW retailer to confirm the model year, configuration, order status and any applicable offer. BMW’s 2026 X5 specification document supports the 2026 X5 xDrive50e model-year reference, but it does not show local stock.
How to choose among the six
- Choose by body style first: the 550e xDrive and 750e xDrive are sedans, the M5 Touring is a wagon, and the X5 xDrive50e and XM Label are SUVs. The M5 Sedan is the other performance-oriented sedan.
- Separate luxury from M performance: the lineup includes conventional luxury models as well as M-branded performance options. Compare the specific vehicle’s equipment and role rather than treating all six as equivalent PHEVs.
- Compare exact-year range, not just the model name: BMW’s figures vary by passage and can be preliminary; confirm certification for the year and configuration you would buy.
- Check the price and offer where you live: BMW prices and incentives change, so use the configurator and retailer rather than relying on an older MSRP or an offer seen elsewhere.
- Be realistic about charging: a plug-in hybrid’s electric-driving benefit depends on charging it. If you cannot charge regularly, assess the vehicle as one that will rely more often on its gasoline engine.
Charging is part of the ownership decision
BMW says, “Charging the battery of a plug-in hybrid vehicle is highly recommended to maximize efficiency and power.” Its eMobility FAQ recommends regular charging and describes home and public charging as options. Consider whether you can charge where the vehicle is parked and how often you will realistically do so.

Home charging equipment, including a Level 2 home EV charger, may suit a driver who can charge regularly at home. Check the selected vehicle’s manual and specifications for compatibility and have installation requirements assessed by a qualified electrician. The connector, installation design and compatibility of a particular third-party charger should be verified for the exact vehicle and property.
