How an EV expo differs from an auto show
The most useful distinction is the event’s centre of gravity. An EV expo focuses on electric mobility and its supporting technology ecosystem. An auto show generally emphasizes vehicles themselves: what different brands and models offer, and how visitors can see or experience them.
There is no universal industry-standard definition that makes the two labels mutually exclusive. Organizers use them for events with different mixes of exhibits and activities, so the name alone is not a reliable guide.

What happens at an EV expo?
Depending on the event, visitors may encounter electric cars alongside batteries, charging infrastructure, drivetrains, components, software, manufacturing technology, and related services. Some EV expos are primarily professional gatherings for suppliers, engineers, buyers, and other industry visitors. Others include public days and hands-on consumer programming.

An auto show typically gives visitors a chance to see vehicles from several brands in one place, learn about models, and compare options. The lineup may include electric and hybrid vehicles as well as combustion, concept, classic, or specialty vehicles. Some shows also offer ride-and-drive opportunities.

The Canadian International AutoShow describes vehicle displays, pricing information, and test-drive opportunities. For its 2026 edition, the organizer said the indoor TD EV Test Track featured 25 vehicles from 12 brands. Its 2026 release also reported that more than 45,000 guests took part in ride-and-drive experiences in 2025; that is the organizer’s figure for the 2025 measurement year, not an annual guarantee.
Can an EV expo include test drives, or an auto show focus on EVs?
Yes. “Expo” does not necessarily mean business-only, and “auto show” does not mean electric vehicles are an afterthought. The NZ EV & Tech Expo programme for 13–15 November 2026 includes a consumer day, back-to-back EV test drives, new-model reveals, seminars, live technology demonstrations, and an industry networking evening. The Canadian International AutoShow has also included EV education and test drives.

- To compare cars: Look for a broad vehicle lineup, model information, and the brands or vehicle types you care about.
- To learn about EV technology: Check whether the exhibitor list and sessions cover topics such as batteries, charging, components, or manufacturing.
- To test-drive an EV: Confirm which vehicles are available, whether registration is required, and any age or other eligibility rules. At the Canadian International AutoShow, vehicle access varies by brand and model; its FAQ describes on-site test-drive registration and age requirements.
- To attend as an industry visitor: Check whether the event offers trade access, professional sessions, supplier exhibits, or networking—and whether registration is limited to eligible attendees.
- To plan a public visit: Verify public access days, dates, location, ticketing, and whether individual activities require separate booking.
Event schedules, exhibitors, vehicle access, and policies can change between editions. Treat an organizer’s current event page and programme as the authority for that specific visit.
