Those are answers to different questions—not proof of how far people actually drive or an objective measure of the range they need.
What BMW’s survey found about daily range and desired range
In a survey fielded in September 2026, respondents were asked how much range would be enough to get through their daily driving routine. BMW Group reported that 73% selected 25, 50 or 75 miles. Separately, 42% said they wanted at least 300 miles before considering an EV, including 18% who wanted 400 miles or more. BMW Group’s October 8, 2026 release presents these as survey responses, not measured trip distances.

The contrast is useful, but it does not mean respondents believe they need only 75 miles in every circumstance. A daily routine is not the same as an occasional long trip, and a stated minimum for considering a purchase is not the same measure as daily driving. The survey did not track respondents’ trips or test vehicles, so it cannot establish how much range any particular buyer objectively needs.
How the survey was conducted—and what it can show
BMW Group says research firm Big Village conducted the online survey September 11–13, 2026, among 1,005 U.S. adults aged 18 or older. BMW describes the results as nationally representative and says responses were weighted to represent the U.S. adult population. BMW commissioned and published the survey, so its findings are best read as sponsor-reported consumer attitudes.

The release does not provide full questionnaire wording, respondent-level data or a margin of error. Its headline figures therefore describe what respondents selected in this survey; they do not establish why individuals chose those answers or predict how every EV shopper will behave.
Range matters, but it is not the only purchase concern
BMW reported that 72% said minimum driving range would be a deciding factor when considering an EV. Yet the barriers respondents named put range alongside broader costs and charging questions:

- Flex Level 1 EV Charger - The EVDANCE Level 1 electric car charger is compatible with J1772 electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles (North American Standard). *Tesla requires a SAE J1772 adapter.
- Convenient to Use - This charger has both NEMA 6-20 plug for 16A 240V charging (3.68kW, 10-12 mi/h) and a NEMA 6-20 to 5-15 plug adapter for 12A 120V charging (1.44kW, 2-5 mi/h). The included bag makes it easier to carry on the go. It also has a 25ft cable length, you can use it flexibly from anywhere in the garage or driveway.
- Check Your Outlet Type -This charger works with standard 120V NEMA 5-15/5-20 outlets (2-5 mph charging speed) and 240V NEMA 6-20 outlets (10-12 mph) . It's not compatible with NEMA 6-15/10-30/14-30/14-50/6-50 outlets – you'll need a NEMA 14-50/14-30/10-30/6-50 to 6-20 adapter (sold separately) to connect.
- Compatible EV Models -This EV charger works with most major electric vehicles, including Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Audi, Nissan Ariya, Rivian R1S, Kia, and others. More than half of respondents—53%—said a vehicle able to add approximately 150 miles of range during a 10-minute fast-charging stop would make them more likely to consider an EV. This is a stated preference about a hypothetical capability, not a promise that a specific vehicle will deliver that charging rate in real conditions. Actual charging depends on the vehicle, charger and circumstances.
Rank #3
- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
BMW also reported that 55% would consider a certified pre-owned or used EV if it offered sufficient savings. That answer signals interest conditional on price; it does not show what savings buyers would require or which used vehicles they would choose.
What the results mean for an EV shopper
The survey does not rank vehicles or identify a universally right range. A shopper can use its central distinction as a prompt to assess their own driving rather than treating either 75 or 300 miles as a personal target.

Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway.
- HARDWIRED - PROFESSIONAL INSTALL: This Level 2 charger is hardwired (not plug-in), so a licensed electrician installs it per National Electrical Code. It delivers up to 48A on a dedicated 60A, 240V circuit - enough to charge most EVs fully overnight. Want more speed? You can set DIP switches 4 and 5 to unlock 50A on a dedicated 70A circuit. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that your electrical panel can support the circuit.
- CONTROL FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start and stop charging, set the charging speed (6-48A), get reminders, and track how much energy and money each charge uses. Requires a 2.4 GHz home WiFi network.
- Start with your routine. Consider the distance you typically drive between opportunities to charge, rather than assuming your daily pattern matches the survey average.
- Account for occasional trips. Think through longer journeys, including where you could charge and how much detour or waiting time you would accept.
- Evaluate charging access and time. Home-charging access, public charging near your routes and the time you can spend at a fast charger can change how useful a vehicle’s range is to you.
- Compare the full ownership trade-off. Consider purchase price, battery-related concerns and charging arrangements alongside range. The BMW survey reports concerns, but it does not compare specific vehicles, prices or battery warranties.
BMW’s Alexander Schleicher, Head of E-Mobility at BMW Group North America, framed the results as a reason to focus on “performance, features and value, not on outdated assumptions about range.” That is BMW’s interpretation of its own survey, rather than an independent finding that range concerns have disappeared.

BMW’s earlier U.S. survey reported that 75% considered 75 miles of daily range sufficient; it also said 29% most commonly selected 50 miles as their preference. That survey was conducted online May 7–9, 2025, among 1,007 U.S. adults, according to BMW’s 2025 release. These are historical results with different reported wording and should not be treated as directly interchangeable with the 2026 figures.
