You drive onto a LeShuttle vehicle train at Folkestone or Calais, stay with the vehicle during the crossing, and drive off at the other end. The rail journey through the tunnel is scheduled to take about 35 minutes.
The service was called Eurotunnel Le Shuttle for many years and has been branded LeShuttle since 2023. “Eurotunnel” is still commonly used for the tunnel and the service, but it is not a public road tunnel and it is separate from Eurostar.

How the Channel Tunnel car crossing works
LeShuttle runs between Folkestone in Kent and Coquelles near Calais. Unlike a ferry, you do not leave your car and go to a passenger deck. Once border checks are complete, you board a vehicle train, park as instructed and normally remain in or near your vehicle for the crossing.
- Book a vehicle crossing with LeShuttle.
- Drive to the correct terminal and arrive at least one hour before departure.
- Check in using your booking reference or payment card.
- Wait for your hanger letter to be called “Ready to Board”.
- Follow the signs for France or the UK and drive onto the assigned train.
- Drive off at the opposite terminal and continue on the local road network.
The Channel Tunnel itself is approximately 50.45 km (31.35 miles) long, with about 37.9 km beneath the English Channel. It contains two rail tunnels and a central service tunnel. LeShuttle’s car trains use one of the rail tunnels; there is no road surface for motorists to follow.

Getting to the LeShuttle terminals
Folkestone terminal
Follow the signed LeShuttle route as you approach Folkestone. Do not rely blindly on a sat-nav destination labelled “Terminal Service Rd” or on the generic CT18 8XX postcode. LeShuttle warns that these may not take you to the passenger check-in booths. The terminal signs are more useful than an automatically selected postcode.
Calais terminal
From the French motorway network, leave the A16 at Junction 42. Follow the signs for “Tunnel sous la Manche”, then “Terminal tourisme”. Do not follow the signs for “Terminal fret”, which are for freight traffic.
Check-in and boarding procedure
LeShuttle recommends arriving at least one hour before your booked departure. Current ticket conditions generally allow check-in no more than four hours before the booked time, while the permitted late-arrival period depends on the fare you purchased.

- Enter the terminal: use the passenger-car lanes rather than freight lanes.
- Check in: self-service booths can retrieve a booking using its reference or the payment-card details used to book. A staffed booth requires the booking reference.
- Take the hanger: the kiosk prints a paper hanger showing a letter. Display it as instructed.
- Watch the departure information: use the terminal screens or the LeShuttle app. Your letter will eventually be called “Ready to Board”.
- Follow the directional signs: at Folkestone, follow “France”; at Calais, follow “UK”.
- Board the train: drive into the carriage, keep to the instructions from staff and park as directed.
There may be a wait between checking in and boarding. Keep your passport, booking details and anything you need for the short crossing accessible, but do not expect to use a conventional passenger lounge on the train. After the train arrives, you drive off and leave the terminal.
Border documents and passenger checks
Border controls are carried out by the UK and French authorities, not by LeShuttle. They take place before boarding, which means you can normally drive away promptly after arriving at the other terminal.

Every passenger needs the travel document required for their nationality and route. LeShuttle’s current guidance says that UK and Irish passengers need a valid passport. Check the latest government and LeShuttle requirements before travelling, particularly if your group includes non-UK or non-Irish nationals.
You must also provide Advance Passenger Information (API) for every traveller before reaching check-in, normally at least 24 hours before departure. Add it through your LeShuttle account or the booking details. Missing API information can prevent travel or cause a delay at the terminal.

Some travellers entering the UK need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). LeShuttle’s current guidance lists the cost as £20 per person and says it is electronically linked to the passport used for the application. Check the current UK requirements rather than assuming that a passport alone is sufficient.
LeShuttle has also stated that there will be no EES biometric capture at its Folkestone or Calais terminals during the summer 2026 holiday period. The EU Entry/Exit System is being introduced progressively, so this is an area where travellers should check the latest official information before setting out.
Booking a car crossing
LeShuttle tickets are priced per vehicle, not per passenger. The fare includes the vehicle and up to nine passengers. In practical terms, luggage is limited by what can be safely carried in the vehicle rather than by an airline-style suitcase allowance.

Enter the vehicle accurately when booking. The following can affect the price or the train allocation:

- bike racks;
- trailers and caravans.
For a UK- or France-registered vehicle, the booking system may identify the car from its registration number. If that does not work, select the correct make and model or use the relevant “Type/Size” option. A car with a roof box or rear-mounted bikes is not necessarily the same booking category as the unmodified car.
Fare types and missed departures
LeShuttle currently offers fare categories including Day Trip & Overnight, Short Stay Saver, Standard, Standard Plus, Short Stay Flexiplus and Flexiplus. The names are not interchangeable: change, refund and late-arrival rules vary between them.

If traffic, a breakdown or a late ferry connection makes you miss the booked time, the outcome depends on the ticket conditions and space on later trains. You may have to wait for the next available service or buy another ticket. “Flexible” is not a guarantee that every late arrival will be carried.
Taking a dog, cat or ferret
Pet travel needs planning well before the day of the crossing. Dogs, cats and ferrets must be microchipped before, or at the same time as, their rabies vaccination. For a first rabies vaccination, the animal must generally wait at least 21 full days before travelling; the vaccination date is not counted as day one.

A UK resident travelling from Great Britain to France will generally need an Animal Health Certificate. A UK-issued EU pet passport is not, by itself, the normal document for a Great Britain resident travelling to the EU.
For a dog returning to Great Britain, a vet must administer a tapeworm treatment containing praziquantel between 24 and 120 hours before the scheduled arrival in the UK, with the treatment recorded in the animal’s documentation.
Pets travelling to the UK must be taken to Pet Reception, normally at least one hour and no more than four hours before departure. On passenger shuttles, pets generally remain in the customer’s vehicle rather than travelling in an aircraft-style hold. Allow extra time for the pet-control process; the normal vehicle check-in timing is not a substitute for Pet Reception.

Check the restrictions before turning up with modified, converted or heavily loaded vehicles. LeShuttle does not accept passenger vehicles fitted with LPG, LNG, CNG or dual-fuel tanks. Switching the system off does not make an LPG or dual-fuel car acceptable.
Spare petrol or diesel is limited to either:
- up to three 10-litre plastic containers; or
- one 20-litre metal container;
with a maximum total of 30 litres per vehicle.
Gas cylinders and fixed gas tanks have separate declaration, inspection, capacity and shut-off requirements. A fixed container may not exceed 47 kg, multiple containers may not exceed 50 kg in total, and fixed containers must be no more than 80% full. Commercial dangerous goods are governed by separate freight rules and should not be treated as ordinary luggage in a private car.

LeShuttle versus Eurostar
Both services use the Channel Tunnel, but they solve different transport problems:

If you need your own car in France or the UK, booking a Eurostar passenger ticket is not an alternative to booking a vehicle crossing.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Searching for a road route through the tunnel: the tunnel is a railway system, so plan to board a train.
- Using the wrong Calais lane: choose “Terminal tourisme”, not “Terminal fret”.
- Arriving with incomplete API data: add every passenger’s information before travel.
- Booking an unmodified-car category: declare roof boxes, trailers, caravans and bike racks.
- Assuming any flexible ticket covers a missed train: read the specific late-arrival and amendment conditions.
- Turning up in an LPG car: vehicles fitted with LPG, LNG, CNG or dual-fuel tanks are not accepted on passenger services.
- Relying on an old pet passport: check the current Animal Health Certificate and treatment rules.
FAQ
Can you drive your car through the Channel Tunnel?
No. You drive onto a LeShuttle vehicle train, remain with the vehicle during the crossing and drive off at the opposite terminal. The scheduled crossing takes about 35 minutes.

The Bottom Line
For a car trip between Britain and continental Europe, book LeShuttle rather than thinking of the Channel Tunnel as a road. Enter the vehicle dimensions and accessories accurately, submit API and travel-document details in advance, arrive at least an hour early, and follow the terminal signs and your hanger letter. The train does the tunnel crossing; you simply drive on and drive off.
