Emissions regulation is part of the pressure: a 2024 report linked the 2.0-litre’s discontinuation to emissions requirements, while Mazda’s later market announcements show the change arriving at different times. The precise company rationale has not been publicly established in the available sources.
What is happening to the MX-5 2.0-litre?
The MX-5’s 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G is a naturally aspirated petrol engine. Mazda’s 2024 European press pack also listed a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre, so the issue is not that naturally aspirated engines as a category have become illegal.
Availability is market- and model-year-specific. In 2024, Motor1 reported that Mazda would discontinue the 2.0-litre in Europe while retaining the 1.5-litre. Mazda UK later said sales of the 2.0-litre would end in the UK with model year 2027. Mazda Austria’s model-year 2027 announcement, meanwhile, described a 1.5-litre 136 PS line-up. These are distinct country and date snapshots, not proof of one simultaneous Europe-wide cutoff.
Those announcements do not establish the final order date, dealer-stock situation, or registration rules in every country. Anyone shopping should check the relevant national Mazda importer and dealer for the exact model year and configuration.

Why the 2.0-litre mattered
In Mazda’s 2024 press material, the 2.0-litre was rated at 135 kW/184 PS, with 205 Nm of peak torque and a 7,500 rpm maximum engine speed. Those figures help explain why enthusiasts may regard it as the more compelling MX-5: it offers more power and torque than the 1.5-litre, alongside a high-revving naturally aspirated character.
The engine figures are not the whole car comparison. Output, weight, trim, body style (soft top or RF), transmission, differential equipment, market and model year can all differ. Nor should the 2.0-litre’s German-market 2024 WLTP figure be compared as if it were a controlled test against Austria’s 2027 1.5-litre. Mazda Deutschland gave the cited 2024 2.0-litre specification 153 g/km of WLTP CO2; Mazda Austria gave its 2027 1.5-litre specification 139 g/km. They are figures for different markets, years and configurations.

What emissions rules have to do with it
Two separate regulatory mechanisms matter, and neither amounts to a ban on naturally aspirated engines.
Fleet-wide CO2 targets
The European Commission describes CO2 targets applying to manufacturers’ new-car fleets from 2025 onward. It reports that average CO2 emissions from newly registered passenger cars in Europe fell 28% between 2019 and 2024. That is a fleet-level change, not an MX-5-specific measurement. Such targets can create pressure on a manufacturer’s overall mix of vehicles, but the statistic alone does not prove why Mazda changed the MX-5 range.

Euro 7 vehicle requirements
Regulation (EU) 2024/1257 establishes Euro 7 emissions and type-approval rules, with application dates varying by vehicle category. Euro 7 is not the same thing as fleet-wide CO2 targets. The available evidence does not establish that Euro 7 alone triggered the 2.0-litre’s withdrawal, or that naturally aspirated engines are prohibited under the regulation.
Why earlier Euro 6d compliance does not settle the issue
Mazda’s 2023 press material said its high-compression Skyactiv-G 1.5- and 2.0-litre engines met Euro 6d without a particulate filter. Euro 6d took effect in 2021. That confirms compliance with that earlier emissions stage; it does not demonstrate that later certification, fleet-target considerations, or the economics of keeping the 2.0-litre in the range remained unchanged.

- die cast with plastic parts
A 2024 report connected the 2.0-litre’s discontinuation to stringent emissions requirements, but the available primary Mazda material does not provide a direct, quantified explanation. No verified executive statement or published cost breakdown establishes the company’s precise reasoning. It is therefore accurate to describe regulation as reported pressure, not to claim that a specific rule or compliance cost has been proven to have killed the engine.
What buyers should take from the change
- Check the country and model year. A UK model-year 2027 statement and an Austrian model-year 2027 line-up do not guarantee the same specification or timing in another European market.
- Confirm the engine on the exact car. Listings and remaining stock may refer to earlier model years; verify engine, trim, body style and transmission with the seller.
- Do not assume the 1.5-litre has disappeared with the 2.0. Mazda’s Austrian 2027 announcement specifies a 1.5-litre 136 PS MX-5, rated at 139 g/km WLTP CO2 for that Austrian specification.
- Treat emissions figures as configuration-specific. WLTP values depend on the vehicle specification and are not interchangeable across different markets, model years or body configurations.
The verdict: regulatory pressure, not a ban
The strongest supported conclusion is narrower than the headline: emissions-related pressure has been linked by secondary reporting to the withdrawal of the MX-5 2.0-litre, and the engine is being removed from some national ranges on different schedules. There is no evidence here of an EU ban on naturally aspirated engines, nor a primary Mazda explanation proving that one regulation alone caused the decision.
