At Tesla Investor Day on March 1, 2023, Elon Musk opened with Master Plan 3: a proposal for moving the global economy toward sustainable energy by electrifying end uses and expanding sustainable electricity generation and storage. The event also covered how Tesla said it would execute that vision, including manufacturing, vehicles, software, charging and energy. Its production and cost figures were ambitions and projections—not results demonstrated at the event.

What was Tesla Investor Day 2023?

Tesla held Investor Day on March 1, 2023, at Gigafactory Texas. In its January 2 announcement, the company said investors would see an advanced production line and hear about long-term expansion plans, the Generation 3 platform, capital allocation and other topics: Tesla’s event announcement filed with the SEC.

This was a corporate strategy presentation, not a vehicle unveiling. Tesla’s official Investor Day recording is structured around three broad parts: Master Plan 3; execution across company functions; and impact and financials, followed by questions and answers. The agenda ranges across vehicle design, powertrain, electronic architecture, software, Full Self-Driving, Bot, charging, supply chain, manufacturing and energy.

What was Musk’s central vision?

Musk’s opening presentation was titled “Master Plan 3.” Tesla later published the plan on April 5, 2023, describing it as a proposed path to a sustainable global energy economy through end-use electrification and sustainable electricity generation and storage. The company wrote: “Today, we are publishing Master Plan Part 3, which outlines a proposed path to reach a sustainable global energy economy through end-use electrification and sustainable electricity generation and storage.” Read the official Master Plan Part 3 for Tesla’s assumptions, sources and calculations.

The scope is broader than replacing gasoline-powered cars with electric vehicles. Tesla’s proposal links electrified energy use with the electricity supply and storage needed to support it. That framing helps explain why the event ranged from vehicle engineering and factories to charging and energy systems.

How did Tesla say it would execute the plan?

The event moved from the high-level proposal to company functions intended to support it. Tesla’s agenda and presentations covered vehicles and their underlying technology, manufacturing, software, charging, supply chain and energy. That breadth described how the company connected its business operations to the strategy; it did not establish that the proposed transition had been delivered.

Vehicles and manufacturing

Tesla executives said the company aimed to reduce the cost of its next generation of vehicles by as much as half, using manufacturing changes such as smaller factories and modular production. The Associated Press reported the figure as a company goal, not a completed reduction. It also reported executives’ projection that a future electric powertrain factory could be half the size of the Austin factory and cost 65% less. These were forward-looking projections, not measured outcomes: Associated Press coverage, March 2, 2023.

Software, charging and energy

Software, Full Self-Driving, charging and energy appeared alongside vehicle and factory topics in the event agenda. Their inclusion showed the range of areas Tesla presented as part of its strategy. The agenda alone does not verify future capabilities, deployment timing or results.

What production targets and projections did Tesla discuss?

The figures below describe statements made at the time. They should not be read as current production numbers or proof that a target was achieved.

Figure discussed What it referred to Status and source
20 million vehicles per year by 2030 Tesla’s stated production target A target reported by the Associated Press in 2023, not a verified result.
1.8 million vehicles in 2023 Tesla’s then-stated expectation for that year An expectation reported by the Associated Press at the time, not a current production figure.
Up to 50% lower cost for the next generation of vehicles Executives’ goal tied to manufacturing changes, including smaller factories and modular production A company goal reported by the Associated Press, not a completed cost reduction.
Half the size and 65% less cost Executives’ projection for a future electric powertrain factory compared with the Austin factory A forward-looking projection reported by the Associated Press, not a completed facility measurement.

All four figures were reported in the Associated Press’s March 2, 2023 account of the event. Their dates and wording matter: targets, expectations and projections are not interchangeable with achieved results.

What the presentation does—and does not—establish

Investor Day documents what Tesla presented: a proposed sustainable-energy framework, a wide-ranging operational agenda and ambitious production and manufacturing goals. Tesla’s Master Plan is the company’s own proposal, not an independently verified forecast. Neither the event nor the plan, by itself, establishes that the broader transition or the targets have since been achieved.
