Elon Musk said Tesla fired a Tommy gun’s drum magazine into a Cybertruck’s driver door and that no bullets entered the passenger compartment. That is a specific claim about one test area—not proof that the Cybertruck is bulletproof. The cited reporting does not independently verify the result or establish the ammunition, test protocol, or a standardized ballistic rating.
What Musk said about the Cybertruck test
On October 20, 2023, Tesla Owners Silicon Valley shared a sighting of a Cybertruck with visible marks on its driver side. Musk replied: “We emptied the entire drum magazine of a Tommy gun into the driver door Al Capone style. No bullets penetrated into the passenger compartment.” Electrek reproduced the statement in its October 20, 2023 report.
The wording is Musk’s account of what Tesla did and what he said happened. The report does not provide an independent test confirming that no bullets entered the cabin.
What the claim does—and does not—establish
It concerns the driver door, not the entire vehicle
Musk’s statement identifies the driver door as the target and the passenger compartment as the claimed outcome. It does not establish that every body panel, the glass, or the vehicle as a whole can stop bullets.

Carscoops reported that Musk and Tesla had not identified the rounds used. The cited coverage does not establish a verified round count, ammunition load, firing distance, or test protocol. Musk also discussed an approximate magazine capacity in an interview, but that does not verify how many rounds were fired in this test. See Carscoops’ report.
The windows are not shown as part of the test
Electrek observed that the apparent test involved body panels rather than windows; Carscoops likewise reported that no shots at the windows were apparent. Musk discussed glass protection separately during his appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience. The interview transcript records what Musk said, not an independent ballistic evaluation.

Why this does not mean the Cybertruck is “bulletproof”
“Bulletproof” is too broad a conclusion from a claim about one door and an unspecified test. Ammunition type and test conditions matter when assessing what a vehicle can withstand. The Drive’s analysis of the Tommy gun claim explains why it cannot be treated as a like-for-like comparison with an earlier 9mm claim without those details.
The cited sources do not establish an independent standardized ballistic rating for the tested Cybertruck prototype. A defensible comparison between vehicle-protection claims would need to specify at least the tested area, projectile and ammunition, firing conditions, vehicle version, independent verification, and any recognized rating. Several of those details are absent here.
