Elfyn Evans and co-driver Scott Martin won their first FIA World Rally Championship titles on 4 October 2026, when the season ended with a dramatic final stage at Rally Italia Sardegna. Oliver Solberg won the rally, but his late off-road moment cost him the power-stage points he needed to overhaul Evans in the championship.
How did Elfyn Evans win the WRC title?
The title was decided on the final Wolf Power Stage. Evans arrived at Sardinia leading Sami Pajari by 17 points and Solberg by 21, with 35 points still available. All three remained mathematically in contention.
On Sunday, Evans punctured on SS16 and stopped to change the wheel. He held fifth overall but lost the chance to score Super Sunday points, making the final stage the effective championship decider. Evans completed his run and scored three points. Solberg needed to beat Evans’s time to complete his title comeback.
What happened on the last stage in Sardinia?
Solberg was ahead of Evans through the splits, but went off two corners from the finish. He recovered and reached the finish line, retaining the Rally Italia Sardegna victory. The excursion cost him the power-stage points he needed to take the championship, so Evans and Martin secured the titles.

WRC Promoter CEO Éric Boullier said: “Elfyn and Scott have shown incredible resilience throughout this championship.” WRC’s season report recounts the title-deciding finish.

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile’s 2026 standings confirm these final totals: official FIA standings. Evans finished five points ahead of Solberg and six ahead of Pajari.

Why was Sardinia the championship finale?
Rally Italia Sardegna became the 13th and final round after Rally Saudi Arabia was cancelled. The Italian event had been expected to be the penultimate round; the cancellation made it the immediate title decider. WRC’s season retrospective says Evans had led the championship continuously from the Canary Islands onwards.

Evans secured the title after five previous runner-up finishes. His official website describes him as the first Welshman to hold the crown and the first British world rally champion in 25 years. Evans’s official site provides that historical framing.
