Electric Vehicles in the US in 2025: Tesla, BMW, Volkswagen and Renault

A retrospective on US electric vehicles in 2025: Tesla refreshed the Model Y, BMW updated the iX, and its new iX3 was slated for US launch in 2026.

For US shoppers looking back at 2025, the clearest confirmed developments were a Tesla Model Y refresh and an updated BMW iX—not a wave of entirely new models from all four brands. BMW’s all-new iX3 debuted globally in 2025, but was scheduled to reach the US in 2026. Volkswagen Group reported US EV deliveries, while the available information does not establish a specific new Volkswagen-brand launch or Renault passenger EV availability in the US that year.

Which electric cars were coming in 2025?

The answer depends on what “coming” means. A refresh or announcement in 2025 is not the same as a new model being available for US delivery that year. Based on manufacturer announcements and reported sales, these were the relevant developments:

Vehicle or brand What happened in 2025 US timing and status
Tesla Model Y Refreshed Model Y; Tesla described improved range, ride and quietness compared with earlier Model Y vehicles. A 2025 refresh, not a separate new Tesla model. Tesla’s April 1, 2025 announcement said the refresh delivered 5% more range with the same battery energy.
BMW iX Updated model announced in January 2025. BMW scheduled production to start in March and expected deliveries in Q2. The announcement included historical pricing for the new iX xDrive45, not a current offer. BMW’s announcement has the launch details.
BMW iX3 Global debut as the first series-production Neue Klasse vehicle. Not a US 2025 arrival: BMW said the US launch would begin in summer 2026. BMW’s US announcement distinguishes the debut from the later US launch.
Volkswagen brand The available official sources do not establish which individual Volkswagen-brand EVs, if any, were new US launches in 2025. Volkswagen Group reported 72,000 all-electric vehicle deliveries in the US for 2025, but that group-wide figure is not a Volkswagen-brand launch count. The group’s January 2026 report provides the delivery context.
Renault No 2025 US passenger-EV availability was established in the official sources reviewed. European Renault models should not be assumed to be US buying options without separate evidence. This is not proof that no exceptional import existed.

What changed on the Tesla Model Y?

Tesla’s April 1, 2025 announcement described a refreshed Model Y rather than a new model line. The company said the vehicle had 5% more range with the same battery energy than earlier Model Y vehicles, and highlighted improvements to ride comfort and cabin quietness. Those are Tesla’s comparisons; the announcement does not turn the refresh into a separate new US model launch.

What did BMW announce for the iX and iX3?

Updated iX: a 2025 model-year update

BMW announced an updated iX for 2025, with production slated to begin in March and deliveries expected in Q2. The announcement gave a starting price of $75,150 for the iX xDrive45, plus $1,175 destination and handling. That was BMW Group PressClub USA’s January 2025 announcement pricing, not a current quote; prices, inventory and delivery timing can change.

iX3: 2025 global debut, 2026 US launch

BMW unveiled the all-new iX3 in September 2025 as the first series-production vehicle in its Neue Klasse generation. The US PressClub announcement placed the US market launch in summer 2026, with an accompanying announcement describing arrival as mid-2026. A global unveiling in 2025 therefore did not mean US deliveries in 2025.

BMW presented up to 400 miles of range as a preliminary manufacturer estimate using EPA test-procedure standards, not a final EPA-rated figure. It also cited a peak charging rate of 400 kW. These are iX3 announcement specifications, not evidence of 2025 US availability.

BMW’s full-year US sales report listed the i4, i5, i7 and iX as its battery-electric models sold in 2025; it did not list the iX3 as a 2025 US sales model. The company reported 42,484 BMW BEV sales in the US for 2025, down 16.7% from 50,981 in 2024. Those figures describe sales, not which models were newly launched.

Did Volkswagen launch a new electric car in the US in 2025?

The available official information does not settle which individual Volkswagen-brand EVs, if any, were new US launches in 2025. Volkswagen Group’s January 2026 report said the group delivered 72,000 all-electric vehicles in the US during 2025. That total covers the wider group, not only Volkswagen Passenger Cars, and should not be read as the number of Volkswagen-brand launches. The report also noted that the discontinuation of US EV subsidies affected the business.

Was Renault selling electric cars in the US?

No official source in the information available here establishes that a Renault passenger EV was available for US delivery in 2025. Renault models introduced or sold in other markets should not be presented as US-market buying options on that basis alone. The lack of confirmation does not rule out an exceptional import or gray-market vehicle; it means a normal US retail offering is not substantiated.

How should US shoppers interpret 2025 EV announcements?

  • Check the event, not just the year. A reveal, model-year update, production start and customer delivery are different milestones.
  • Confirm US timing specifically. BMW’s iX3 illustrates why a global debut date is not a US delivery date.
  • Treat estimates as estimates. BMW labeled the iX3 range preliminary and tied it to EPA test-procedure standards; it was not a final EPA rating.
  • Use dated pricing only as historical context. BMW’s January 2025 iX price announcement is not a current quote.
  • Separate brand figures from group totals. Volkswagen Group’s delivery count does not identify Volkswagen-brand launches.
