Electric Police Cars in America: Models and Real-World Deployments

A January 2025 assessment listed seven battery-electric models in U.S. police patrol fleets. Here’s what the list and documented department assignments show about their actual roles, charging and pursuit status.

Yes—U.S. police departments use battery-electric vehicles, but there is no verified nationwide count of current deployments. A January 2025 fleet assessment identified seven models then being used in police patrol fleets: the Chevrolet Bolt, Tesla Model 3, Tesla Model S, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Tesla Model Y, Chevrolet Blazer EV PPV and Ford F-150 Lightning Pro SSV. That is a dated snapshot, not a complete October 2026 census, and a vehicle used by police is not necessarily a routine or pursuit-rated patrol cruiser.

Which electric vehicles have appeared in U.S. police patrol fleets?

The January 2025 ICF assessment included in Takoma Park fleet materials names these seven battery-electric models as then in use in police patrol fleets “in a handful of police fleets in the United States.” The list is useful for identifying models, but it does not establish how many vehicles were deployed or whether every model remains in use today. ICF/Takoma Park assessment

Model Body style What the snapshot establishes
Chevrolet Bolt Sedan Listed as used in police patrol fleets in the January 2025 assessment.
Tesla Model 3 Sedan Listed as used in police patrol fleets in the January 2025 assessment.
Tesla Model S Sedan Listed as used in police patrol fleets in the January 2025 assessment.
Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV Listed as used in police patrol fleets in the January 2025 assessment; Michigan State Police later documented a limited patrol assignment.
Tesla Model Y SUV Listed as used in police patrol fleets in the January 2025 assessment.
Chevrolet Blazer EV PPV SUV Listed as used in police patrol fleets in the January 2025 assessment.
Ford F-150 Lightning Pro SSV Light-duty pickup Listed as used in police patrol fleets in the January 2025 assessment; Ford also markets a police special-service configuration.

The assessment’s seven-item model list is more reliable than its nearby body-style tally, which does not add up. This list should not be treated as an exhaustive, current roster: the available evidence does not provide a verified national deployment count for October 2026.

What do documented police deployments actually involve?

Ford Mustang Mach-E: Michigan State Police pilot assignment

On January 13, 2025, Michigan State Police announced that a 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E was its first battery-electric vehicle used on patrol. It was assigned to State Security Operations Section officers providing general law-enforcement and security services at state-owned and leased facilities in Lansing—not identified as a statewide trooper cruiser. The agency described the assignment as a pilot to study long-term performance, potential cost savings and broader applicability. Michigan State Police announcement

MSP director Col. James F. Grady II said: “This is an exciting opportunity for us to research, in real time, how a battery electric vehicle performs on patrol.” He explained that the security officers drive fewer miles at lower speeds within city limits, with charging available nearby, making the assignment a controlled fit for evaluation.

Ford F-150 Lightning: Cambridge traffic investigation work

Cambridge Police said on July 7, 2025 that its F-150 Lightning was assigned to traffic crash investigators. It joined a marked Mustang Mach-E used by Youth Resource Officers. At the time of that announcement, the department hoped to add its first fully electric patrol-division vehicle later in 2025 or early 2026; that was a stated plan, not confirmation that the deployment occurred. Procurement and police equipment are not the same as deployment

Washington State procurement listings include 2024 and 2025 Ford F-150 Lightning battery-electric configurations under police-vehicle contracting; the 2025 listing identifies an optional SSV configuration. That shows purchasing availability, not that a named agency put one into service. Washington State procurement listings

Ford says the Mustang Mach-E was submitted for Michigan State Police’s 2022 model-year evaluation and currently highlights the Mach-E and F-150 Lightning Pro SSV on its police vehicle page. The company describes its Special Service Vehicles as serving assignments that do not require pursuit capability. A manufacturer’s listing or evaluation submission establishes an offering or test, not department adoption or pursuit certification. Ford police vehicles

Are electric police vehicles pursuit-rated?

The available evidence does not establish pursuit certification for every model in the seven-vehicle list. “Police vehicle” can refer to a patrol vehicle, a specialist or administrative assignment, or a vehicle offered with police-specific equipment. Ford’s distinction is especially important: its SSV line is designed for specialized needs that do not require pursuit capability. Do not assume a model is pursuit-rated merely because it has police equipment, appears in a police fleet assessment or was evaluated by an agency.

For a specific vehicle, check the department’s assignment and the manufacturer or agency documentation for the exact model year and configuration. The evidence cited here supports a limited Mach-E patrol pilot and other particular assignments; it does not establish blanket pursuit approval across the listed models.

When can an electric vehicle work for police duty?

Fit depends more on the assignment’s daily route and charging access than on the vehicle’s presence in a police catalog. The ICF assessment flags the duty cycle and charging window as key considerations, and says a vehicle without a 2–4 hour charging shift may not be a good contender for EV use. That is assessment guidance, not a universal engineering cutoff. ICF/Takoma Park assessment

  • Assignment and mileage: A predictable security, administrative, youth-officer or crash-investigation route may be easier to match to an EV than a patrol role with uncertain mileage and long periods away from base.
  • Shift and charging window: Compare the vehicle’s usable range in the department’s actual conditions with shift length, between-shift downtime and the chance of an unexpected callout.
  • Charging access: Confirm whether vehicles can reliably charge at the station or assignment site, and whether installation capacity and parking arrangements support the fleet.
  • Equipment and payload: Police radios, computers, lighting, storage and other upfits consume space and power; verify the specific vehicle configuration can accommodate them.
  • Service and lifecycle costs: Include local maintenance support, acquisition, chargers and installation, energy, routine maintenance, and the cost of keeping a vehicle available for its assigned duty.

The assessment’s charging overview gives generalized Level 2 figures of roughly 10–20 miles of range per hour and 4–6 hours for a typical light-duty EV full charge. Actual charging depends on the vehicle, charger, installation, battery state and other conditions; these figures are not a guarantee for a particular police fleet. ICF/Takoma Park assessment

Does an electric police vehicle save money?

Not automatically. In one police SUV comparison, the ICF assessment modeled an eight-year total cost of $68,234 for a Ford Mustang Mach-E battery-electric vehicle and $62,643 for its gasoline comparison. Its inputs included capital cost, Level 2 charger hardware and installation, annual energy or fuel, and annual maintenance. These are case-specific modeled figures, not current prices or nationwide averages; a department’s result depends on its vehicle, energy costs, duty cycle, infrastructure and assumptions. ICF police SUV cost comparison

The Ford F-150 Lightning Pro SSV product page specifies a 220A DC-DC power source to support police radios, computers and lights. That is a manufacturer equipment specification, not a measure of the vehicle’s overall electrical capacity for every upfit or operational scenario. Ford F-150 Lightning Pro SSV
