Short answer: The EarthCruiser Extreme 330 XTR6x6 is a Toyota Land Cruiser 79 Series transformed into a six-wheel-drive expedition motorhome. It is not a Toyota-built production 6×6: EarthCruiser Australia and 6×6 Australia extend the chassis, add a driven rear bogie, portal axles, air suspension and a carbon-composite camper body.
With a published 7,000-kilogram GVM, three sleeping berths, four belted travel positions, 275 litres of fresh water and a large lithium-solar electrical system, the XTR6x6 is designed for long, remote trips rather than ordinary weekend camping. The extra axle increases traction potential, load sharing and space, but also brings the size, licensing requirements and mechanical complexity of a light expedition truck.

What the XTR6x6 actually is
EarthCruiser publicly unveiled the XTR6x6 in August 2023 after more than 12 months of development. The first example began as a customer-requested one-off. Interest from other customers led EarthCruiser to treat the design as a regular model rather than a single custom build.
The base vehicle is a Toyota Land Cruiser 79 Series, part of Toyota’s 70 Series family. The conversion work is performed by EarthCruiser Australia and 6×6 Australia. That distinction matters: calling it a Toyota Land Cruiser 6×6 is understandable shorthand, but it should not be interpreted as a factory Toyota model or a standard vehicle available through Toyota dealers.
EarthCruiser Australia currently lists the Extreme 6×6 as an Australian product based on the 70 Series LandCruiser chassis. Its current description identifies a roughly three-metre camper and a 7-tonne GVM, and lists a light rigid truck licence as the required Australian licence class.
Why the third axle is functional, not decorative
The XTR6x6 uses a 6×6 Australia bogie-drive system for its two rear axles. The rear axles are arranged in a coil-and-airbag-sprung bogie that shares load between them. A drive-through differential and power divider allow the rearmost axle to remain effectively undriven during normal smooth-road travel, while the system can lock to send drive to the additional rear wheels when traction demands it.
That operating strategy is important. The third axle is not simply added to carry a longer body. It can contribute propulsion when needed, while load sharing allows the extended motorhome to carry more equipment and living-system hardware than a conventional two-axle Land Cruiser conversion. The trade-off is another axle, differential, driveshaft arrangement and set of wheel-end components to inspect and maintain.
The driver also has selectable differential locking, including an ARB air locker. In difficult terrain, the bogie-drive lock and axle lockers address different problems: the first makes the additional rear axle part of the driven system, while the lockers limit the ability of an individual differential to spin away available torque.
Chassis, suspension and traction hardware
To accommodate the extra axle and larger camper, the original chassis is laser-cut and extended. The conversion reportedly adds portal axles, a claimed five-inch lift and approximately 16 percent gear reduction. Portal axles place reduction at the wheel ends and help provide the substantial differential clearance reported for the vehicle.

| Component | Reported specification | Practical significance |
|---|---|---|
| Rear axle arrangement | Coil-and-airbag-sprung bogie with load sharing | Distributes the rear load across two axles and supports the larger body |
| Drive system | Drive-through differential and power divider | Allows the rearmost axle to be engaged when extra traction is required |
| Axles | Portal axles | Contributes to wheel-end reduction and ground clearance |
| Suspension | Six airbags, automatic load and horizon levelling, three height modes | Balances the vehicle and allows ride-height adjustment; the total range is reported at up to 100 mm |
| Damping and roll control | Bilstein shocks, steering dampers and military-specification heavy-duty sway bars | Controls a tall, heavy vehicle and its extended body |
| Rear steering | Variable-ratio rear-steer arrangement | Designed to improve manoeuvrability despite the extra axle and longer wheelbase |
| Tire-pressure control | Central tire inflation system controlled from the cab | Lets the driver adjust pressure for changing surfaces without leaving the vehicle |
The central tire inflation system is operated through a Garmin touchscreen. Drivers can change pressure from the cab rather than manually airing down each tire at the trailhead and airing up again afterward. The system is a major convenience for a vehicle intended to move between sealed roads, gravel and soft or uneven terrain, although the correct pressures remain dependent on load, surface and tire manufacturer guidance.

Reported wheel and tire equipment consists of EarthCruiser forged 17-inch alloy wheels and 35 x 12.5-inch Federal Xplora mud-terrain tires. The lowest differential housing is reported at approximately 15.4 inches, or 39 centimetres, above the ground. That is a substantial clearance figure, but it does not eliminate the need to protect the body, steps, steering and recovery points when the vehicle is manoeuvring over rocks or deep ruts.
Brakes, payload and recovery equipment
A vehicle approaching seven tonnes needs more than a lifted Land Cruiser suspension. The XTR6x6’s braking upgrade includes a hydraulic brake booster, upgraded calipers, heavy-duty brake rotors and an electric parking brake.
EarthCruiser publishes a 7,000-kilogram GVM, with a reported payload of approximately 3,000 kilograms and a front-axle capacity of 1,980 kilograms. These figures should be treated as reported specifications rather than a guarantee for every customer build. The final usable payload depends on the selected equipment, fuel, water, passengers, food, tools and expedition cargo. The 275-litre fresh-water capacity alone represents roughly 275 kilograms of water when full, before the tank, plumbing and other supplies are counted.
Recovery equipment is unusually comprehensive. The reported build included a winch-compatible bull bar, steel scrub rails and steps, front and rear 13,000-pound electric winches, two spare-wheel carriers, heavy-duty front and rear recovery points and Maxtrax recovery system equipment, including Maxtrax MKII recovery boards.
That does not mean every owner needs to buy the same equipment, but Maxtrax MKII recovery boards are a directly relevant comparison for anyone researching off-road recovery boards. Fit, load rating, mounting position and the recovery plan for a seven-tonne vehicle still need to be checked rather than assumed from a smaller 4WD.
The specification also reportedly included a pressure washer, wet/dry vacuum, air compressor, chainsaw and Fiskars axe. Those are useful expedition tools, but they came from the reported build specification and should not automatically be treated as standard equipment on every current XTR6x6.
A camper body built for remote living
EarthCruiser fits a vacuum-infusion-moulded carbon-composite motorhome body to the extended chassis. The interior layout is a stretched version of the company’s pop-top XTR250 floor plan, giving the six-wheeler a larger living module without abandoning the compact, expedition-oriented arrangement.

The rear kitchen is U-shaped and includes a dual induction cooktop, sink, microwave and 122-litre refrigerator. A second 68-litre refrigerator sits in an exterior storage cabinet beside a slide-out electric barbecue. That arrangement separates frequently accessed outdoor food and cooking equipment from the main kitchen, which can be useful when the vehicle is stopped in wet or muddy conditions.

Sleeping and travelling capacity
The XTR6x6 sleeps three people. A double bed occupies the over-cab alcove, while the dinette converts into a third berth. The camper has two belted seats, and the cab has two more, for four belted travelling positions in total.
In other words, the vehicle carries four people legally in its reported seating arrangement but provides sleeping space for three. Buyers travelling with four occupants would need to plan for one person to sleep elsewhere or confirm whether a particular build has been modified.
Bathroom and mudroom
The entry zone performs several jobs. It acts as a bathroom and mudroom, with a folding-wall system that creates a private shower area around a powered slide-out Thetford chemical toilet. There is also an exterior hot-and-cold shower for washing gear, people or muddy dogs without bringing dirt into the living space.
Off-grid electrical and climate systems
The reported electrical package is sized for a vehicle that may spend extended periods away from campsites. It includes a 1,110-Ah lithium battery bank, 810 watts of solar panels, a 200-amp mine-spec alternator and a 3,000-watt inverter.
Those numbers describe substantial capacity, but they do not by themselves establish how long the camper can operate off-grid. Actual endurance depends on battery voltage, usable depth of discharge, solar conditions, driving time, heating and air-conditioning use, cooking habits and the customer’s appliance package. EarthCruiser describes the electrical system as upgradeable, so the reported figures should not be assumed to be identical on every build.
Three Garmin touchscreens control vehicle and camper systems. Two can be removed from their wireless docks and used as remote controls. The cab display includes Hema mapping for off-road navigation. That custom installation should not be confused with a retail Garmin Overlander navigation unit; the retail product is a separate option for people building or outfitting a smaller rig.
Connectivity was also part of the reported specification, with an integrated flush-mounted rooftop receiver for Starlink for remote travel. This is a useful distinction from simply carrying a portable hotspot, but the vehicle report does not establish a service plan, coverage everywhere the camper can travel, operating cost or connection performance.

What the 6×6 layout improves—and what it complicates
The additional axle solves several design problems at once:
- Traction: when the bogie-drive system is locked, four rear wheels can contribute to propulsion rather than only the original rear axle.
- Load sharing: the rear mass of a large motorhome body, water system, batteries and expedition equipment is spread across two rear axles.
- Living space: the extended chassis supports a larger interior than a short two-axle conversion.
- Expedition payload: the vehicle has room for tools, spares, recovery equipment, food and water that would overwhelm a smaller camper.
It also adds consequences that are easy to overlook in a promotional photograph. The extended chassis, third axle, power divider, portal hardware, six airbags, steering system and motorhome body all create more components than a standard Land Cruiser. That means more inspection points, more specialized parts and potentially more difficult servicing in remote areas. This is an engineering inference from the architecture, not the result of an independent reliability test.
The XTR6x6 is also physically larger and heavier than a conventional 70 Series camper. A three-axle vehicle may distribute its load well, but it still needs room to turn, a route that can support its width and height, and recovery planning appropriate to its mass. Its equipment can improve the chance of self-recovery; it cannot make a seven-tonne vehicle behave like a lightweight trail 4WD.
Licence, price and availability
Licensing
In Australia, EarthCruiser identifies a light rigid truck licence for the XTR6x6. That is a direct consequence of the vehicle’s published GVM and should be checked before ordering, not after delivery. Licensing, registration, axle limits and road-access rules differ by jurisdiction, so an Australian licence statement cannot automatically be applied to buyers in the United States, Europe or elsewhere.
The 7,000-kilogram GVM is the maximum permitted loaded mass, not necessarily the vehicle’s empty or delivered weight. EarthCruiser’s current Australian description also refers to the camper as weighing under seven tonnes. Those statements are not contradictory: tare or actual build weight and GVM are different measurements. A buyer should request the exact tare, axle loads and remaining payload for the chosen configuration.
Price
No verified launch price for the XTR6x6 was established in the researched material. A 2023 report compared the vehicle with the earlier XTR250’s starting price, but that older model’s price should not be reused as the XTR6x6 price. The cost of a current example will depend on the build specification, options, shipping, taxes and registration location. A current quote from EarthCruiser Australia is the appropriate source.
Where it is offered
EarthCruiser Australia continues to list the Extreme 6×6 in its range and provides a North Wollongong, New South Wales contact location. The listing establishes that it remains a current Australian product offering, but it does not establish universal stock, a guaranteed delivery date, a standard final configuration or a public price.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesEarthCruiser’s United States website should not be used as a proxy for XTR6x6 availability. The U.S. operation currently emphasizes platforms such as EXP, FX, MOD and CORE, and describes a move away from the original factory toward partnerships and distributed production. A 2025 company announcement says the business remains active under that new operating model, but that status is separate from the availability of an Australian-built Toyota Land Cruiser XTR6x6.

Who is the EarthCruiser XTR6x6 for?
The XTR6x6 makes sense for a specific kind of traveller: someone planning extended expeditions where water, power, tools, food, recovery equipment and a proper living space are more important than compact dimensions, low cost or simple field repairs.
It is particularly compelling when the trip demands all of the following:
- self-contained living away from established campsites;
- substantial water, battery and solar capacity;
- high traction potential on remote tracks;
- payload for tools, spares and recovery equipment;
- cold-weather protection and climate control; and
- a camper that can carry its own kitchen, bathroom and sleeping facilities.
It is a less obvious choice for a buyer who mostly camps near paved roads, wants an inexpensive Land Cruiser conversion, expects ordinary-car licensing, or prioritizes the simplest possible drivetrain for remote servicing. A conventional two-axle camper may be smaller, easier to place on narrow tracks and less mechanically elaborate, even if it offers less payload and interior space.

The EarthCruiser Extreme 330 XTR6x6 is best understood as a specialized Australian expedition truck built around a Toyota Land Cruiser 79 Series, not as a factory Toyota novelty. Its lockable bogie drive, portal axles, load-sharing air suspension, central tire inflation and extensive recovery equipment give the third axle a genuine engineering purpose. The carbon-composite living module, large battery and water reserves then turn that drivetrain into a self-contained remote-travel platform.
Its compromises are equally real: a 7-tonne operating class, Australian light-rigid licensing, greater mechanical complexity, large physical dimensions and no confirmed public price. For the right expedition, those are acceptable costs. For ordinary camping, they are likely to be the reason to choose something smaller and simpler.
Specification note: Equipment figures in this article combine EarthCruiser Australia’s current model description with reported 2023 build specifications. Customer builds may differ, so final weights, options, licensing requirements, availability and pricing should be confirmed directly with EarthCruiser Australia.
