Dyson published images and a short video of its canceled electric-vehicle project on June 3, 2020. The vehicle, code-named N526, was conceived as a spacious, seven-seat SUV with features including a bespoke electric motor, flexible battery architecture and advanced air filtration. It never reached production or went on sale: Dyson had announced its decision to propose closing the project in October 2019, saying it could not make the program commercially viable.

What Dyson showed in June 2020

Dyson’s June 3, 2020 feature presented images and film of the battery-electric vehicle it had been developing since 2017. The company attributes the images and films to Dyson; readers can view them in Dyson’s official vehicle feature. MobileSyrup covered the publication the next day, describing the material as additional images and renders.

These were glimpses of a development project, not a launch announcement. The vehicle was never offered as a retail model, and the published design descriptions should not be read as final production specifications.

What the planned N526 was supposed to be

Dyson identified the vehicle by its project code, N526, and described it as an SUV platform. Its account of the intended design included:

Those are Dyson’s descriptions of the proposed vehicle. Autocar’s June 2020 report also discussed development vehicles and reported battery and range plans, but such figures were project targets, not independently tested or certified specifications for a production car.

Why Dyson stopped the project

In an October 10, 2019 update, James Dyson said the company could not make the car commercially viable despite trying throughout development. He also said a serious effort to find a buyer had been unsuccessful “so far” at the time of the announcement. That wording describes the status then; it does not establish what later happened to the project’s assets.

Dyson’s later retrospective said market developments had changed the economics of a technology-led car program. That is the company’s explanation, rather than a detailed independent analysis of the project’s finances. MobileSyrup noted at the time that Dyson had not provided a fuller breakdown of the reasons for the decision.

What happened to the work afterward

Dyson said engineering work and talent from the car program were applied to other research and development. Its feature also noted that Hullavington Airfield, acquired originally for the vehicle program, later served other Dyson research groups. The company’s account of the project’s development, design and later use of the work is available in its 2020 retrospective. James Dyson also recounts the project in a chapter of Invention: A Life.
